2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

I think Trusova's 4S is under but the 3T looks good, an attempt is an attempt nonetheless, these are no small feats, Scherbakova's looks good. I just hope these young ladies can stay healthy no matter what.

Trusova's 4S is UR, yes. She also has a video of a UR 3A.

Still, she's only 12 years old so she is in no rush. And her overall jumping technique is absolutely gorgeous, especially the Lutz.

Her official goldenskate page lists her under ''Shcherbakova'', either way "English" versions always butcher spelling of Russian surnames (also Polish if they don't use diacritics).
Shcherbakova is correct. Russian щ is not the same as ш which would be an equivalent of Sch or Sh. It is more like Sch/Sh pronounced with a tongue close to the teeth

agree. All of her jumps are impressive.

Because looks like google translate went crazy??? :eeking:

"Figure skating does not stand still, and we with Eteri and Sergei Dudakov perfectly understand this, so during the season we learned different quadruple jumps with the athletes. At the moment, Anna Shcherbakova has shown a quadruple "Tulup" and Alexander Trusov's quadruple "Salhov", but we are teaching Alexandra a triple Axel and a quadruple "Tulup", and with Anna a quadruple "Lutz"."?????
:eekn:

Not surprised at all about quads from Eteri's new prodigies.

TAT announced it i think at JGPF, and as i said in the past Eteri is pushing Ladies figure skating forward probably more than anyone else.

This is not even Russian hunger games but more like Eteri's skaters vs the rest of the field and they are always some steps ahead of the others.

The impressive stuff will be next season (and the years to come) if both Anna and Alexandra will include those quads in their programs and if they are able to land them consistently, cause we saw Rika Kihira struggling a lot this season with the 3A, many skaters attempting 3A and quads but never in competition.

Actually letter Щ stands for soft "szcz" which is more or less "shch" in English. Ych writing it is hard as really no sounds in English can replace it in 100%

But the football club Шахтер Донецк is Shakhtar Donetsk in english instead of Shchakhtar

I don't know the romanization of the slavic languages is still a mess to me, it is designed to be understandable by western people but not very accurate. (as we saw previously ЦСКА for example is CSKA in english instead of TSKA) It's almost a different language.

God forbid no :P Mostly American. But still they are commentators so they should now how to pronounce skaters' names

That happens in tennis as well. Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland is known as "Aga" in tennis circles here in the US because the announcers can not say her name correctly. When she said her name on camera for the first, I understood why. It was similar with Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. When she said her name in an interview, I was like.......:scratch3:

It's that way with some Russian names as well. When Maria Butyrskaya pronounces her name. She doesn't put the emphasis on the "Skaya" like we do here in the states. It really does sound like she's saying "Butyrsky" I think it's kind of cool. Does she still use her maiden name or does she hyphenate it with her Husbands name?

Listen to Agnieszka Radwanska pronounce her name 28 seconds into this video....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNnrtwLol2k

SO impressive. The 'draw' from Sotnikova's success and Lipnitskaia's popularity from Sochi will be compelling for at least a generation would be my guess.

Ш and Щ are different letters ;)

Also, Shakhtar is a transliteration for the Ukranian name of the club (Шахтар). Meanwhile, Шахтер would be transliterated as Shakhter or Shakhtyor

Well, what it says is pretty much that ^^
Anna showed a 4T, but is also learning a 4Lz.
Alexandra showed a 4S, but she is also learning a 3A and a 4T.

It says the girls may have a quad in their programs next season already.

tulup = Toe Loop
salhov = Salchow

To me, the Ladies' FS is getting more and more like gymnastics. Teaching how to jump is important, but learning how to prolong their career is also very important, not only to this sport, but also to those passionate fans. Hopefully these little girls' skating career could last a bit longer. At least after puberty they could still land those hard jumps, not including the quads of course.

I agree. It has been a bit disappointing how short careers have gotten for the very top competitors because they are unable to maintain form. I would love to have seen skaters like Julia remain competitive so that we could witness her artistic growth after Sochi. I feel similarly about Caroline Zhang, who I though had a lot of potential but was never able to improve in the areas she needed to.

I would say it was the same before, but a lot of people didn't care because there were americans on top.

How long Sasha Cohen, Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes, Kimmie Meissner lasted?

On top of that this is not even that true since this is gonna be the fifth season at seniors for Satoko Miyahara, Elena Radionova and Anna Pogorilaya, and they are still top contenders; Evgenia Medvedeva is winning everything for 3 seasons in a row.

The thing is the sports is moving faster now than in Yuna / Mao / Miki / Caro era when there were only 4-5 skaters able to skate a clean SP and a clean LP consistently.
