Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

What do they mean when they say he needs to show more emotion any way? After all emotion can be anything joy, happiness, sadness, boredom, anger, fear etc.

For H&L, Yuzuru had a joyful performance in GPF (at least the first half), a show of of determination in 4CC, and perfect calmness at Worlds, and all three emotions worked very well with the music. What more does anyone want, what is the emotion he needs to show that would make everyone happy

One more thing, why is the talk only about H&L and not LGC? That program shows Yuzuru's performer abilities and is something only he could ever do. Yet, everyone is talking about the mistakes in the jumps and ignoring the artistry in the program :scratch2:

That how things goes, people who dislike others will keep on picking on the others so called imperfections and blatantly ingore the obvious good part of them. :rolleye: wait am i making sense here?
Now i wish Yuzu will be a hermit at the TCC this whole off season achieving the highest degree of enlightenment in the tenets of quads (4A ;)) coming out of the temple (TCC) delivering salvation to those poor souls who unable to understand the greatness of the religion of Yuzu. Ok im really not making any sense right now :slink:

Anw... Should we lighten the mood a bit?

Off-season started to hit me hard...
Consoling myself by doing throwback to old videos of him.

His reaction when he realized he won gold at Sochi 2014.....

Just pure gold omg...

Another angle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP6fF3Fms3Y

The younger Yuzu is so adorkable asjkadl;df;.... *died*

I watched those vids 100 times! He is so sweet and his reaction so genuine and innocent!!! To die for!:dbana:

speaking about Mai, in SA or CoC one of comentator said she skate like Patrick Chan, and in 4CC one of comentator said she jump like Yuzu. I'm rooting on her the most for the current JPN ladies, hope he will make it big

I was watching Mai during practices at worlds and couldn't take my eyes off her. She does skate amazingly smooth. I think it will be hard for her with Marin around as well though. Because it's like they can't celebrate their talent equally and just have to pick sides :rolleye:.

I've done it!! In the time it took for 6 pages to be added to this thread, I've painted my 5th (?) Hope and Legacy picture. http://figureskating-in-color.tumbl...appreciation-for-hope-and-legacy-this-program
 an inspirational program from a truly great skater. :hap93:

Gorgeous! :clapper:

Wasn't this also the commentary where Tara said, after Yuzu bowed to Brian and Tracy, that they should be the ones bowing to him? As someone who has thought that for years, I was delighted to hear a commentator finally say it. I've watched FS for decades and I believe he's not only the best FS in the world right now but also the best ever in the sport. To paraphrase Kurt Browning, he's genius on ice.

For me it's only 16 years, but I concur. He is so special and there would absolutely be a void without him around. I don't think I'd be as invested in this sport right now without him around. I have never felt like he made me feel at the end of his program at Worlds. I don't know if anything can match that high. The closest thing to it was 2003 with Shen and Zhao, 14 years ago. When a skater makes you feel lucky you were there, that's truly a rare thing.

The one person who is truly complimentary towards Yuzuru and doesn't have a bitter bone in his body is Oda. But then Oda is sunshine and rainbows and unicorns packed into a human body that was then sprayed with glitter just for effect.

Sounds like you could pretty much replace that with Jason Brown as well. You want a sunshine and rainbows, that's the guy. I don't think I've ever been hugged so much by someone I just met.

To be frank they coached mainly top ladies skater (and boy, don't they have a lot of them) and not have a male contender so they should have nothing against him. But Yuzu was pretty chatty to Hamada in Sc talking about Satoko's stsq and seem closer to Tamura because of TOI. They maybe are more approachable to him than someone like Nobuo Sato, Yamada or Nagakubo (generation gap too lol).
Anyway there will be more top skaters coming from anywhere but those two places sooner or later. I don't think Wakaba is affiliated with Kansai/Nagoya? Mai and Kaori too? Imho, these 2 forces (K/N) has many great coaches in teaching SS, presentation and refinement but need help when it comes to jumps. But Mai, Kaori and Wakaba are actually pretty good at both SS and jumps so how it will play out in the future is interesting.

Kaori and Mai are from Kobe, Wakaba from Tokyo, so literally nowhere, no political power.

I discovered Mai at CS last autumn and liked her immediately. Hopefully she will get one of the olympic spots.

Same! Mai-chan gliding so fast and smoothly across the ice is such a joy to the eye , esp. when she skates right after Russian girls, the contrast:p Looove her big change-edge spiral! And her jumps are high, clear, and beautiful, very refreshing among the "new trend" of low-air, fast-rotating jumps. She said in an interview that she learns 3Lz by watching videos of Yuzu's jump. (She addresses him "Hanyu-sama." lol how cute.)

I'm taking this and my thoughts to the invisible forum thank you very much:slink:

yes, how smooth her movement is what make me fall for her skating. Marin is JSF darling but hope talent will win

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

recently I lurk on her fan fest and read that last season he can't barely stood on the ice, and how touched she was when Japan National attem being played at 4CC becouse she won, all of them make me broke in to tears, only two skater who can moved me like that, one is Yuzu and the other is Mai

sorry off topic, :(

I woke up with the beautiful music of H&L in my ears and Yuzu's dazzling performance at Worlds in my eyes, feeling so peaceful and happy. Then I went to my favourite place called Yuzuru Hanyu Fan Fest and learnt that my favourite male skater of all time was criticised by my favourite female Japanese skater of all time

What is the definition of emotional in your dictionary, Akiko? :laugh2: I still like you and I'm not going to judge you by this article but I will keep an eye out for you, just in case :)

H&L is my favourite programme of all time. It's so emotional that it makes me cry every time I watch it :sad21: It's soft, calm, tender, spiritual, sensitive, warm, strong, loving, pure... I love everything about this masterpiece and everything he does in H&L

I had been trying to convince my parents what a genius Yuzu was since the season 2008-2009. For my mum, it was easy to recognise his lyrical skating, artistry and musicality since she had always been a fan of figure skating in ladies and men, and she soon started rooting for him.

My dad who believed beauty could come only from female skaters never got Yuzu and thought he was just a fragile kid who collapsed on the ice after his performance all the time. He had always been like that, tending to skip most men and watch ladies, until this season. It wasn't Nice R&J. It wasn't his Olympic gold medal. It wasn't Seimei. It was H&L that finally made him realised how phenomenal Yuzu is both artistically and technically. He says Yuzu is just extraordinary, beyond comparison, in another league, and he feels sorry for the rest of men because Yuzu's elegant, beautiful and emotional skating makes them look like they are only executing elements on the ice. Now he tends to skip most ladies and watch Yuzu.

It was a very long way for me, but I'm satisfied now. Mission accomplished. Thank you, Yuzu for showing us H&L. It was a pure gift

Now you got me to imagine how it would be like if Nobu and Jason are commentating together...I think it will be a session with lots of tears, laughs and hugs between the two of them :sad21::hap93::hap10::points:

Omg when Jason moves to Japan (because i'm sure he will do that at some point haha) i SOOO want him to do that at least once! I bet it would be as interesting as the event itself :D

Because these articles are made to put down Yuzu, why talking about program that is showing how great performer he is? :frown:

But honestly tho, how nice it would be if Japan's domestic competition could be healthy ...

The 1st time I became Yuzu's fan was in Sochi 2014. I watched his subbed documentary videos and used to wonder why, despite so many ice rinks in Japan, none was available for him to train after the tsunami that he needed to join 60+ ice shows to practice and also for building his competitive program. He used to say that it was his dream to become a skater who trained in Japan and suceeded, but the political power game really pushed him away just because he happened to be the outsider.

Now I'm just thankful he has the TCC team he can rely on.

And now I feel like crying...

I like her too! I'm afraid she beat Satoko to my #1 favourite lady :luv17:
Some say that her Cinderella FS was not good, but she is such a sweet girl that itwas impossible not to smiling while watching her

a lot of smiling Yuzu to lighten the mood

Looking for pics of smiling Yuzu is so relaxing

They are looking like they are in
the same age on this photo

I'm going to be super sad when they decide their Olympic team. If Satoko is healthy she should be on the team, but who to choose to join her between Marin and Mai? Marin has more marketability. And then there's Wakaba as well. *Sigh* Such a shame.

Jason's learning Japanese and they love him over there. They could totally have their own show.

And now I feel like crying...

Don't :console:. All this does is confirm that he is King. He is so beloved and already has an impressive legacy at this point. His true fans will never turn their backs on him...and if you didn't notice, he's got a lot of them :2thumbs:. He's not beloved because of that either. He's beloved because he makes people feel something. And you can't put a price on that.

I always wonder why there is rarely talent from Tokyo considering the dense population there. Limited ice rinks? No skating programs? I wonder why Waseda uni did not just made one considering both Shizuka and Yuzuru has studied/is studying there. Or is it because Shizuka and Yuzu's image are so closely connected and attached to Sendai that building a skating unit with them as the faces (for Waseda) would make it look like they stole Sendai stars from them?

:luv17: This. He makes us feel so many things in those minutes he's skating... I always feel like i'm on an emotional journey (emotional as in, travelling through different emotions as if they were stops along a path) guided by him whenever he skates.

I think that even JSF don't want to think about choosing ladies for Oly team yet, it will be such a mess. I'm so sorry for the ladies that will be left home already :drama:

And for Yuzu, I'm just sad that he wanted to train in Japan and working as a team with other skaters for their country, but some people prefer to push rivalries and throwing shade.

I'm hope he really feels how many people around the world love and support him. If I will ever have the chance to see him live I will definetly contribute to pooh rain

I've been thinking deeply about the reception of H&L. I myself didn't connect to it for a while. It was a slow burn, but I've come to prefer it to Seimei, which really shocks me given how quick and passionately I fell in love with that program.

We've discussed Yuzu's talk with Brian after SC, and how he proved to be right about adding the quad loop. But I believe Brian was also right that he needed to focus on improving the overall skating. Yuzu wanted to master the jumps first, and then attend to the artistic impression. But, however impossible, he needed to do both. Jump mistakes break the delicate spell of H&L, but the spell cannot be woven only with perfect jumps.

By presenting an incomplete product, he made room for a muted first impression. Of course it's unfair—programs are supposed to evolve over the season, but in this case, because of his unique position, it became ammunition against him that he was "unemotional." It seems like Yuzu did listen to Brian, because for me the first half at NHK (before the combo of doom) started to work. YOLO 4CC, while it had emotions of its own, I don't think they were the ones the music asked for.

I think the design of the piece was maximized for the live experience, but not the tv one. It is at the mercy of the camera operator. Unfortunate camera angles obscure subtle gestural details in the step sequence. At Worlds this was my favorite part of the program, but at home, I sometimes zone out, because it looks like less is happening due to the camera work. Also, as this thread educated me, the pattern across the ice is a significant part of the beauty, and that is only seen in fancams, not traditional broadcasts.

Even live, my experience of the piece was more about atmosphere than emotion. I didn't cry; I felt like I was taken to another place. I was watching him fly, because he was not bound to the ground. The air changed and it was more fresh and clear. Watching was like smelling a temporary bloom of spring flowers, a beauty that is almost pain, because you want it to last forever and it won't. It was an enveloping, inward atmosphere, not one that drives outward, through the tv screen.

I respect him so much for pursuing such a concept. Probably it is an artistic statement too advanced for the sport of figure skating as it currently exists, which relies on short cuts (mime, characters and warhorses). Nor is show skating often as sophisticated as it should be, relying instead on cheap and cheesy extroversion or schmaltzy tearjerkers (especially in North America—Smuckers Stars on Ice *cringe*). But some commentators did understand H&L; the Hungarian and French Worlds commentary shows so. Judges though, usually seem to be far behind not only the avant garde but even the general public in their tastes. So he must pander to them next year.

Since we are giving love to the Japanese ladies, I would like to toss some flowers toward Satoko and Wakaba too. But I actually like them all :sad4: Why does America have three spots? We don't need them, Japan does!
