As you know, I don't know very much about music but I've always loved this piece and I remember googling "Elgar Nimrod" and not learning much.
I also like very much Jeff's 209 SOI to Eclogue.

Sorry for doing a non-quote quote, but I just wanted to ask you something when I saw that you had been in this thread.
What do you think of this version of "Hallelujah"? It is performed by the first figure skater to represent Cyprus, Kristina Dubrovskaya (ISU Bio; Rink Results Bio; Stats On Ice Bio; Tracings Bio):

For me, the jury is still out on the echo effect. When I started listening, I didn't like it and felt it was unnecessary. But later in the song, it really added to the atmosphere.
On the whole, I really liked this version.

a few things bug me...
accent... when covering a song, it's hard to get over that... remember Ken Lee?
i like this song with more power... and that's why I like KD Lang's version (and so did Lenny) the best...
this version is pretty but not powerful... this is a song that can push me to the ground crying when well done... after the cover you shared i was " nice" ... that's not the effect wanted in my opinion..
However,
despite a few pitch problems here and there, she does a good job and i am sure that she can sing many many songs very very well... to me, she's not a good candidate for Cohen.. but I respect her desire to sing it... and her dedication to it... such a wonderful song.

Oh my goodness. I had not seen that before!
But, I thought the judges were overly harsh on her. She was actually a pretty good singer.
You know, watching that is actually reassuring to me. I am a native English speaker, but there are a lot of English songs where I cannot make out the words, and end up making up my own. I still cringe remembering one time when I made an absolute eejit of myself when I was a kid. My cousin was putting on the "Take That And Party" CD, and asked me if I wanted a particular song, and I picked my favourite song ("Could It Be Magic"). Except I hadn't been able to make out the words properly before then, and it took her a moment for her to work out what I meant from the garbled rubbish I said!
:Yeah, when you are singing in a language that is not your native language, it can be difficult to get the right song for your accent.
For example, using Kristina again, I put on the version of "Hey Jude" that she posted yesterday, and it really did not suit her Russian accent. But, her accent does suit "L.O.V.E." (which I posted somewhere on GS before, but can't find now).
Fair enough. She is young and is still learning the craft. And I expect that she will improve as she gets older and more experienced.
"Hallelujah" is a song that is both difficult and iconic. So, I was impressed that a 19 year old Russian girl could sing it as well as this.

And yes today I saw that there are multiple line dances to it. But yesterday I created a partner dance to this. In like 2-3 hours I did. Okay well the dance is repetitive and I listened to it in the car for that long.

I wasn't a big fan of Steps when they first appeared. I was more into the Spice Girls and All Saints back then. And this country / dance crossover group (yes, that is what they were publicised as at the start) just wasn't my cup of tea. And, if I'm totally honest, "5, 6, 7, 8" still isn't.
But, I have came to appreciate Steps a lot more since then. Largely because their subsequent releases were more my taste.
Despite it taking a while for them to grow on me, I still knew the dances for "One For Sorrow" (why is there a different video on their VEVO?!) and their cover of "Tragedy" off by heart! And I can still do them!
Since Steps has been brought into the conversation, I suppose this is a good excuse to share with you the first single I ever bought:

Some of my friends and I were in a drama group at school, and we were putting on a performance to this song for Open Night. So, I bought the single so that we could rehearse it whenever we wanted.
I am a massive fan of ABBA. I liked Cleopatra and B*Witched. I had a MASSIVE crush on Billie Piper! And I loved the songs in this medley anyway. So, I didn't need much of an excuse to buy it!

Depends when in 1997 it was released...actually I don't know it I became potty-trained in 1997 or 1998. I know it was one of those 2 years though.
I just love dancing. I did ballet for 7.5 years before I quit to do cheer, but I always have that dancer inside of me. I've done some other dance styles in college/university for either my fine arts credit or as an elective. And I like to create some dances though I don't have the best choreography skills.
Interesting to see on how they were publicized. And I learned how they became a group. Interesting as well. It's cool to see songs that are highly popular in Europe but haven't reached the same popularity in the States. Same with TV shows.
I'm listening to the single now. Like the tribute that's there. And of course I've heard of ABBA. Thanks to "Mamma Mia."

It's only an expression. I didn't necessarily mean it literally.
But, in case you are interested, it was November 1997 that it was released.
What becomes popular where is actually something I find interesting as well. Like, there are lots of things that have been really popular over here that I was amazed didn't break America. Just shows how big a divider the Atlantic is.
Or even the English channel. Like there are loads of things that are popular in Europe that are totally unknown in the British Isles. As I've said before, I used to watch the German music channels a lot, and I came to like loads of singers and bands that are HUGE on the continent, but nobody in these islands have even heard tell of.
Funnily enough, I've never seen "Mamma Mia". I kinda thought that being a fan of the group would mean that I would go in and end up being disappointed because the cast wouldn't live up to the original. So, rather than risk being disappointed, I didn't watch it.
Well, if I'm totally honest, since there were 5 of us (3 guys and 2 girls), but only 4 members of ABBA (2 guys and 2 girls), I opted to be the one that did the backstage stuff.
Well, I'm a shy guy anyway!

Stella Getz: I didn't recognise the name, so I had to look up the songs. And I didn't recognise any of them either, I'm afraid. I was never into dance music, so that is probably why she passed by me unnoticed.
Shampoo: I absolutely loved "Trouble"!!! But, can't say I am familiar with any of their other songs.
I have to admit, I am surprised that you find it amazing that I remember Cleopatra. They were really big here for a couple of years, before they faded away. (They were already starting to fade away when they appeared on that ABBA tribute).

Oh, and the contestant who lives 10 miles from me, Andrea Begley, just happened to win the series!!!
(And can I just add that I am not a fan of the type of music her very famous auntie, Philomena Begley, does! So, I was relieved that Andrea is taking a different musical route).
