I made a translation of this Month's Figure Skating TV by Fuji, including comments on and by Shoma.
Take a look. http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...16-17-Season&p=1731274&viewfull=1#post1731274

Thank you Specs! Interesting to read what Shoma's motivation is, watching others skate. I think the approach to have fun out there because he loves what he does is the best basic for future competitions. Worlds 2016...he probably wanted too much too fast and couldn't handle it. I think in this moment it was easy to forget that this is something he loves to do. And that enjoyment was there this year. I hope he keeps that understanding at the Olympics. That even in such an atmosphere he is still able to relax, live the moment and take it all in.

I'm late to the party... :o: A big welcome to GS Forum and Shoma's thread, Latremu and Scarymouche! :party2: Post often post long. :)

Just wanted to give my two cents about the Shoma flutz thread, because it made me laugh... I seriously don't understand the point of these persons. Because based on the same programs we could reverse the thread into a "Shoma PCS greatness vs. Chen and Boyang not-so-great PCS" (and I like Boyang)... What is it if not bashing ? :noshake: "It's not bashing it's talking about facts". Certainly yes, we can state "Shoma flutzes. Tech panel don't always call it. Fact." I don't see how a serious discussion could go further because we cannot do anything about the two statements.
I hate the kind of disrespect toward athletes based on hypotheses that somebody is not working to correct their edge, or don't do anything for their spins and blah blah blah... these persons don't know anything about the life of a high level athlete, about their routine, their plan, but it doesn't matter! Let's go and judge them ruthlessly! And more than that, these persons must have never put a foot on the ice to make such assertions, they don't know how HARD it is to correct the edge of a jump. Personally, I have troubles with my flip taking off with a flat/outside edge. I corrected it on my single but everytime I work on the double..... The outside edge comes back.

Well I wish people measure their words more carefully.

And a warm welcome to our new posters !!

@Pika, well said! I wish that the mods close that thread imo it has long ago run its course.

I don't know if this has been posted here yet, but here's an account of the practices at The Cave in Helsinki (the practice rink) by a journalist and there's mentions of Shoma. I'm quoting the relevant parts.

Edit: Actually, there's too many relevant parts to post them all! There's like two sections dedicated to him.

Thank you so much! That was a wonderful read and the photos of the #Cave were amazing! :)

Has anyone here seen on Twitter the translation of Shoma's interview with the Nagoya mayor? The mayor says, "I heard quints are physically possible." (Possibly suggesting that he do them to increase his chances of winning??) Shoma's like, "They're physically possible. I don't plan on doing them." So happy he's not talking about attempting quints (or quad axels)! Phew!

I read the mayor's quints comments, and I wondered if Shoma did his famous head tilt when he heard those remarks. As if quads aren't bad enough! I guess Mr. Mayor doesn't know too much about figure skating! Will be anxious to see the GPF taking place in Nagoya. Wonder if there will be any tickets at all for international sale.

And a belated welcome, Latremu! :agree:

I think what I loved about Shoma's approach this year was that they really had a very concrete plan in place from the beginning of the season. I don't know that he necessarily worked harder, but I think he worked smarter. I think his first senior year, he did endless run throughs of his programs, and I'm just not sure that was the smartest way to work. While this year we were all saying why is he doing so many ice shows, so many competitions, going to the U. S. to train, etc. etc., I think his team really knew how best to keep him motivated. I think his first senior year, he had WAY too much time between 4CC and Worlds. So they had a plan and stuck to it. I was worried he might experience a second-year slump, but obviously that didn't happen.

I think we're going to be in for a real treat as we watch him grow this year. I'm really anxious to see the improvements he will make both in his artistry and his jumps. And I agree with you Pika. Too bad skaters can't just wave a magic wand and correct their flaws. It doesn't work that way, unfortunately.

Awwww it always warms my heart to know that Shoma had fun and laughs in spite of his falls :') He really does make a conscious effort to prioritise his own enjoyment of skating, doesn't he?

Thank you! The Cave is so cool, a mix of modern ice rink yet primordial with the stone walls. Literally a cave deserving the name. It's great to read about their practice in there. Shoma's such a cutie, sitting on the ice after all his jumps!

It's quite amazing how many competitions he joined this past season. I thought he would be exhausted. However, watching his practices before competitions and the performance during the competition itself, it appears he's more motivated when he's competing, which may have been why joining more competitions worked better for him this year. He certainly stunned the commentators who saw both his practice and his performance (case in point, British Eurosport reporters Chris and Simon)!

When you see Shoma live in practices, he has a very strange combination of being light hearted and having fun but also tremendous intensity. Even commentators mentioned that this year at Worlds practices he was smiling and laughing and having fun. That was quite a contrast to last year's Worlds practices where he never looked comfortable, his body language seemed rather negative, and he just didn't get into it. One of the days I saw him practice, he was having trouble with his 4Lo. He didn't let it bother him at all though and just laughingly went over to Coach Fluffy and talked to her. He just shrugged it off and kept working hard. It seems he has made tremendous progress with the "mental game" aspect of things, and I hope that continues into next year.

I thought one of the funniest comments I heard about him (from Jonathan Beyer, I think) at the beginning of the season was "When Shoma competes, he comes out and skates every time as if it's the last skate of his life!" Yes, our Shomita seems to love skating and love competing. And kudos to Coach Fluffy   for helping him with the mental game.

And a huge welcome to you, Scarymouche, to a fun thread where we celebrate the achievements and hard work of our Shomita !

Hi, Shoma fans all around the globe. I am new to this forum, but was following this thread for some time, and really enjoyed reading your comments. I became a huge fan of Shoma after seeing his mind-blowing Turandot at the GPF 2015, although I did know the name and that he was an amazing talent, but that performance just knocked my socks off. I saw him live twice: first at the Rostelecom cup and then at the Worlds 2017, both times only FP. What an amazing skater he is, and what a personality! The way he interprets and almost embodies the music is just phenomenal: all these cute little details in his arm gestures, head movements, etc., and the way he articulates the musical flow with his routines and jumps (think of 3A in SP or the first 3A in FP), oh God. And the CANTILEVER, obviously. I so wish him all the best in his first Olympics with the Winter and Turandot! I even wrote him a message via the official website, overcoming the not-so-user-friendly Japanese language, although I am not sure he's actually reading this stuff. And his English, alas, must be pretty basic. Hope I will be able to see him live again in the future (although probably not at the next Olympics), and take a selfie with him (that's what many of you want, I guess). He's an adorable little kid outside the rink, but somehow develops into a fierce and mighty warrior on the ice.

i would really like Shoma to skate to something joyous again tbh :)

Yeah, this kid is hilarious. Tbh, I think the intensely dramatic style that he has now suits him very well, and makes him look very mature and focused on ice, so I would not change a lot here for the next season's SP and FP. I wonder what his Winter will look like, but I am sure it's going to be pretty much in the same style. As for FP, I am glad they're changing the choreo, but let's pray that they stick to that cantilever move at the end, on vincero'. I am sure Shoma's style will evolve in the future, and he will cover a wide range of expressivity/emotions/musical styles.

Hi Shoma fans!
Recently, a lot of Shoma fans have revealed their identity so I too have decided to show myself :luv17:
I've been a huge fan of Shoma's since last season but he first caught my eye when I was watching figure skating to watch Yuzuru back in 2015-2016 GPF (just like Hronop hehe). His 'Turandot' really caught my eyes and that night even though Yuzuru remade history, for some reason it was Shoma's performance that left an impression in my heart. It was my first time seeing him and I really felt his burning passion and power he had for his skating. That magical performance made me feel so warm and powerful and content.

A year had passed and I almost forgot about figure skating but one day on youtube the same video of Shoma's Turandot came about along with his Lavendar performance. That got me immediately hooked. More than anything I love Mihiko sensei's choreography that matches so well with Shoma's style. He really sells his performances and
Shoma's lavendar is of a young man who appears to be chasing something precious but no matter how hard he tries he can't seem to grasp that something. His soul is screaming in pain, as he gets closer to it, that something falls out of his hands and disappears. His last spin is him screaming out of agony - that's how I see it. His spins and step sequence are pure perfection and I love them - they are so varied, so fast, so centred (when he does well!) and his hand movements are so beautiful. Ah, anyway, I feel that Loco and Lavendar are kind of similar in a way because his soul is screaming in both of them.

It's been so emotional following him the last season, every single competition he gets better, he learns from his mistakes and I'm so glad that he is my favorite. He is such an amazing, sweet, humble individual and great athlete.

I have a twitter account dedicated to him so when I find some updates I hope to share from now on and translate some information from Japanese to English :yahoo:
So excited to see his new performances of Winter and Turandot 2.0 - they're going to be masterpieces I can feel it already!! I heard that he might be performing one of them in one of the ice shows around the end of this month - it would be great if he does
