A long interview with Keiji Tanaka, he talks about his season and also about Yuzu and Ryuju. -I may translate some parts. He's a really nice guy.
As always, this is a basic translation, so if you spot an error or want to offer an alternative translation, please comment.
Portions where Keiji talks about Yuzu:
-Do you talk about retirement with the athletes who are the same age as you?
K: I do talk about it. With my generation, Yuzuru and Hino are there and when talk is of retiring, "When should we do it" stuff like that. (laugh)
-What do these two (Yuzu and Hino) mean to you?
K: We first met at the Nobeyama training camp. Since we met, we've come all this way together. We've competed since we were novices, and by knowing each other's condition, for example if I heard that Yuzuru had landed a new triple, I'd feel like, 'uh oh' and it would make me work harder. In a good way it made me feel a sense of danger throughout the novice and junior times, and helped me be ambitious.
-Your impressions when you first met them?
K: Hino had a quiet personality. Yuzuru was the same as he is now. (laugh)
(at the Nobeyama training camp) the first person to talk to me was Yuzuru. In the line-up, Yuzuru was in front of me so he introduced himself. "I'm Hanyu Yuzuru". He's the same now, he hasn't changed a bit. (laugh)
- These two were intergral to your growth, in the process, was there ever an incident that made you think, "I must try harder."
K: At Junior Nationals, when Yuzuru won. I was able to feel the gap between us and Yuzuru moved to seniors soon after that and with out losing very often, he pushed his way forward.
I was able to see him become great from close by.
- Did you ever feel regret (kuyashii)
K: Of course, the feeling of regret was big. But one shouldn't only feel regret, since I watched him since we were little, I can frankly accept that he's great. Since I felt that I couldn't grow right away, Hino and I said "Let's move upwards, step, by, step" And it was nice that we were able to finally stand together last season at NHK.
