Welcome to GS and thank you so much for the photo you bring us. It's such a lovely photo and Shoma looks amazing!

Thank you for the warm welcome, xeyra!

hey welcome! idk if you have seen this program https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSMDwmbtcb4 if not it's amazing you should watch it. and he does an ina bauer at 4:00. It's not long but it's there.
But i guess maybe you mean layback ina bauer like Shizuka and Yuzuru, in that case i don't think Sho has ever done one and i don't think he ever will since it is such a Yuzuru move now.

I have! Thank you for linking it! But yes, it's very brief, I would have loved it so much if it were a bit longer.
Oh no, while Yuzuru's is one I absolutely love, I love any form of ina bauer :luv17:

A fan noting Shoma's FaOi jumps https://twitter.com/onoyuzu1/status/876344409171705856 (Makuhari→Kobe→Niigata)
He's having problem with his 4F but it's amazing that the improvements are visible at every show!!

I think your faith in him has to do with his ability to keep calm during his performance. Even when he makes a mistake (falls, etc), he continues on without a change in his body language or facial expressions, and is generally still able to perform the rest of the program well.

Welcome to iorii, my fellow newbie on this forum! So many of us newbies and previous lurkers revealing ourselves now! :-D

I agree!! And thanks for the warm welcome, as for me, I had enough spamming Twitter with figure skating talk by myself and needed to move here

That fanart is so cute, the artist has nice strokes, I'm gonnna follow the artist. Thanks, MaiKatze!

I kinda love how you can immediately see whether he's satisfied with the performance, and then the scores don't influence his mood that much. Like how after his CDP and Worlds 2017 SP he just skips on the ice (Tarasova called him "a little goat" there...), happy with his performance, but in WTT, even though he skated clean and very well, he's dissatisfied since he had to turn 3T into 2T, so he's not very happy there. And of course in other cases others already mentioned. Sometimes Mihoko is more emotional at K&C even, because Shoma already kinda... knows how well he's done? in a way? I think that speaks to his immense mental strength and how he's mentioned numerous times that he is kinda always... striving for this ideal and skating without the other skaters and scores influencing him, skating by himself and for himself (and not really for scores, though of course sometimes he's still surprised by them — but notice how he isn't surprised at all at Worlds 2017, at least not outwardly; he already has his own assession of how well he's performed). That's also why I have so much faith in him, too! I think that's such a great attitude to have, and that's why he's able to enjoy competitions so much, able to actually watch skaters before and after him and just enjoy it, to continue to improve and move forward. Honestly, it's so wonderful. I admire him so much.

On 5-18 I posted a list of areas where I thought Shoma had shown growth and improvement. One of the more intangible (but extremely important) things was “Fought hard in his biggest battle – the battle against his own nerves.” He has worked really hard at this throughout the year. For me, someone who has the heart of a champion tries to keep himself on an even keel emotionally – don’t get too crazy happy over a victory, and don’t get too depressed over a defeat. I know that’s easier said than done, but I think he is well on his way to being able to do that. And he seems to try to learn from his mistakes. Keep calm and skate on!

I loved the You Tube in Daphenaxa’s Post #4558 from 2014 Junior GPF where he skates to Don (Shoma de Uno) Juan. And as always, the Spanish ladies (my favorites, the “madre mía twins”) provide fabulous commentary – loving his gorgeous 3A and musicality among other things. Of great interest to me, even at that stage of his development, they said “He skates with such a calmness.” And how old was he then? 15 years old? (The twins got pretty excited about his skate but only commented with 1 madre mía, 2 olés, and 2 Sí Seňores. I think they got more excited than he did!)

Shoma also commented on how the Asian Winter Games were a real turning point for him. Of course, his haters loved that and said, “That mess was a turning point?” He explained further that particular competition made him realize the importance of staying calm even under difficult circumstances and how helpful it is if he can keep himself calm. Pretty sure he was referring to the fact that he was so exhausted that he was trying not to be super nervous, just knowing that the competition was going to be very difficult for him stamina wise.

I agree with some of the previous comments about becoming so emotionally invested in a skater. Sometimes I feel like I almost can’t even look, I’m so nervous! Thank goodness for You Tube! I had so many favorite moments of his programs this year, but I especially liked the ones where he was so happy after the skate. And to me, he never crosses the line into being cocky. There is a fine line between swagger (having a quiet confidence in your ability) and cockiness. Add a dash of humility to that, and you have the wonderful combination that is Shoma!

https://youtu.be/712KJzAEzr4?t=299 Skate America FS – Yes Prince of Tango, it was fun to stick your tongue out (a la Uncle Dai). And I love that he and Fluffy are laughing in the K & C while they are lamenting the fact that he blew the 3 jump combo.

https://youtu.be/F5zmBCyGxzU?t=285 GPF FS – best spin of the year followed by the “did I really just do that?” look. Yes, you did Shomita, and you did it under huge pressure!

https://youtu.be/xytyB-XiINM?t=185 4CC SP – love that he is SO happy at the end and no doubt thrilled that he debuted the 4Lo and did a beauty with a good + GOE. I also love B ESP Uncle Mark’s comment that Shoma is incredibly eager to improve his skating. Just LOVE this K & C where Shomita and Fluffy are so cute together!

We are in for a great time next year! Winter and Turandot are going to provide lots of thrills and chills moments, I'm sure! :hap10: :party2:

Of course, his haters loved that and said, “That mess was a turning point?”

…Haters are an indication of how afraid they are of shoma. On the one hand I’m not wasting time on them and won’t give them fodder, but I do want to keep abreast of their mental state, lol. so I’m glad you mentioned their reaction to a comment of his.
But I enjoyed reading the entirety of your post, as well as all the other people who wrote so accurately about emotional investment during the season, and you know, there’s something almost zen-like about him, i agree!
…which brings me to that cute link with Shoma as a birdie! zen-like? na perhaps not, just very shy I think!
I came back here today and found so much. to read and see. as always thanks. (both long-timers and newbies!)
thanks for the continuing updates, this time from Niigata, it’s appreciated!
As I said, you all wrote so accurately about “enduring” the coming competitions, lol, there’s nothing more I think, but i’ll say, i’m much too frail to start now! because I’ll be dead by august, he-he. Meanwhile that blogger that was mentioned, fyshomauno…I go there now and then to stop myself from working myself up over skating itself, she’s got great pictures and a weird sense of humor. I relax and laugh a lot. i think they were bidding Shoma’s body parts at one point! (neck, collarbone, tummy, etc i really enjoyed myself) One stress-reliever, besides a fifth of old scotch...

I remember that and had the same impression! loved it too, he seemed to be reveling and feeling so free, was jumping with energy and abandon. what a relief after the competition yes, and thank you for bringing it up, it seems awhile ago now!

I'm sure he felt a huge sense of relief. But you know what I liked even more, that he did a short encore of the ending of Turandot. I remember thinking, "Oh I miss that wonderful program!" Well, I guess I don't have to miss it anymore! And I am D-Y-I-N-G to see the new choreography. :console:

ETA -- Welcome iiori!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Arriba!

I'm happy you brought up Shoma's GPF spin again, I love it so much I kept waiting if he would pull off another perfect spin like that for the rest of the season.

And his 4Lo, it's amazing how quick he stabilized his 4Lo. I'm glad he acknowledged his limit and removed 4S from his layout.

Something I've been wondering, where did nickname Shomita first come from? It's very cute.

Has this been posted? Group photo from Elladj's instagram featuring Shoma in cat ears again. It's the cutest thing ever, which contrasts so much to those gifs posted before of his bit-lipping cantilever. Cute!Shoma vs Notsoinnocent!Shoma.

Don't think so. OT, but Shizuka-Mama with her little girl is the most adorable thing ever.

While we're at it...(the cantilever gifs are the new thigh gifs! :))

I actually think the first one is the most :eekn: I would use words that are not allowed on this forum, hehe. :o:

Second one has the lip-biting...as good as it gets....

And the third is the one with the naughtiest smile....

All are different, all are gold! This slow gifing really works in favour of highlighting the difference between the cantilevers!

I opened these gifs at work right now. This is not appropriate. Stop him!!

"Little goat"?! That's so funny!

I also laughed at his surprise after getting his scores in Rostelecom cup SP and 4CC FS. You can tell he expected lower scores, probably because he HAS assessed and expected certain scores based on his performance. He's his biggest critic.

Regarding his cantilever spread: He makes really interesting faces when he does that! I think it attests to his enjoyment of doing it. Whether it's an erotic face or he bites his lip or he smiles with his eyes closed... I don't know if he's realized what he's doing to his fans. Well, he might have been told, since it was so short in PIW 2017 (I remember making a sound of protest when I saw that, barely a split second!!), plus he hasn't really done it as his move when he goes out in opening/closing productions of shows. Much as I enjoy seeing him jump, I enjoy seeing his cantilever spread more, so... Such a shame. I'd like to find out who told him and voodoo the heck out of him/her. We don't mind the facial expressions, Shoma! We really, really don't.

I should have added the NSFW warning before, haha.

If there was one thing I would like Shoma to work on a bit more (besides the GOE of his jumps) I think it would be audience and judges immersion. Of the currently competing Men, he is right up there with the top already, but I have a feeling he could be the best of them all, if he works on it a little bit more. Of course, he's come a long way already, improving heaps since he debuted at seniors. He's more the silent type, I hesitate to say shy/introverted, because I don't feel that describes him correctly. You can see the subtleties in his cantilever expressions, but this is zoomed in and slo-mo.

It's probably a bit unfair to compare him to this, which is a later program of Daisuke (he was 26 at that time and didn't have the tech needed today...but I just watched that and thought, well, I think Shoma can slowly get there, perhaps with time and a bit more maturity). He can ooze the sensual, sultry stuff already, but at 19 he still has ways to go. Foundation is there, though. Not that Daisuke was ever really rewarded in PCS for the wonder he was. *stillbitter*

I could imagine Javier, Jin Boyang or even Yuzuru with a programme like this, but to me Shoma appears as a different person and type of skater. In my opinion he is very determined, serious and cool, but not playful.
On the other hand I seem to recall, that Daisuke is Shoma's huge figure skating idol. Maybe I'm completely wrong about him and Shoma turns out to be the perfect entertainer... #WhoKnows

As of now, I agree, but Shoma is so young. He's not experimented that much yet. Javier is unfortunately stuck in the comedic 'I'm playing a character' box. That's what he does best and it works. Jin Boyang really only started this season to get more of a character, and he also chose the 'clownish' persona, which fits him well, because it responds to his quads too. Imagine him skating to Four Seasons and you already have a bit of a problem. Yuzuru is the most versatile of the skaters at the moment, doing extremely well with soft classical music but also interprets the hell out of something challenging like Let's go crazy, which is a crowd pleaser.

What did Shoma show in his short senior career?

His first SP was arguably the most 'experimental' as it's EDM with a mouth organ. Then Turandot, Opera and classical warhorse, Ladies in Lavender, poetic and violin focused and the power of Tango in LOCO. That is in his short career he had 4 different styles already. So I do think he can be playful and do something like Daisuke's Rock'n'Roll medley. We won't see it next season, because Olympic Seasons are obviously the ones where you stay in your comfort zone. But as Shoma grows up in the senior World I do believe he will have many more programs that are not the 'norm'. Getting older means more experience and at some point perhaps the need to get a bit more 'independent' from Higuchi and Yamada. Meaning, I don't think they will make choices for him for the rest of his career. He's not even legally an adult in Japan. So for me there is still so much of a boy in him, but I see glimpses of the more 'mature' moments. He just needs to work on it. I think he can do it. Of course he will never be Daisuke Takahashi, because there is only one Daisuke Takahashi. He will not and cannot be replaced. But that doesn't mean Shoma cannot learn from him and translate it into his own style and channel that into his performance for the judges to see. It's a tall order because the tech almost makes it impossible these days. Let's see what the future brings.

There are different levels of playfulness and as much as I love Boyang, his playfulness is more of the humorous kind, not the sexy kind  I don't know much about Daisuke's history but I'm sure he didn't come formed sultry and seductive out of juniors either. The kind of program he did at 26 he probably couldn't do when he was 19; that was something he developed that as he gained maturity and confidence. Shoma is developing that confidence and I actually find him very mature in his skating, especially compared to his age peers. There are glimpses of his potential for that kind of more playful nature, whether conscious or unconscious (he's gotten into this lip biting habit on his cantilever... who knows what'll come next!), but yeah, he's still only 19 and in his second senior year and the comfort level to express that inner playfulness will come with time. I'll actually be able to appreciate that kind of playfulness more without feeling guilty when he's a little older too. :o:
