Nathan Chen

The newest issue of International Figure Skating magazine published a Top 20 highlights of skaters who challenged themselves and, in turn, others; skaters who rose to the top of their game and the brave ones that soldiered on when the going got tough. No big surprise that Nathan was one of the 20 skaters they picked! Here are a few of their comments:

Without warning, 19-year-old Nathan shook up the establishment last season and forced every other man in the sport to take his game one step higher. Chen's five-quad outburst in the free skate at U.S. nationals last January gave everyone an insight into where the sport is headed.

Nathan won Finlandia, was 4th at his first Grand Prix in France, second at NHK and the silver medalist at the Grand Prix Final. Gold at 4 Continents was followed by a sixth-place finish at Worlds.

Nathan's daring moves at U.S. nationals set a new standard and changed the thought process of every elite male competitor -- a revolution that took less than five minutes.

Gaahh! :gaah: Nathan is 17, not 19! When you're 17, 2 years is a big percentage of your age. And Nathan is all the more incredible because he's so driven, composed and undemonstrative (off the ice) for his age.

But this great wrap-up sentence is first-rate! I really love it. It's what the figure skating commentators, former competitors, etc. all seem to get, although many fans of Nathan's competitors naturally may be reluctant to see it. Also that Nathan is most definitely not just about quads jumps; his skating is thrilling musically, especially, where he uses and embodies the music for dramatic effect.

He actually turned 18. ie. legal, not so long ago :D

Tidbits:

--Japanese fans are preparing for Nathan's arrival for his Dreams on Ice shows this weekend. They've created a twitter hashtag #NathanWelcomeToJapan to send their welcome greetings.

--Nathan makes a brief cameo appearance (of sorts) in a recent Japanese program dedicated to Shoma. The topic of discussion was the cost of costumes, and it was mentioned that the top skaters' costumes can cost in the hundreds of thousands of yen.

--If you want to follow Nathan on Instagram then it appears you may be better off following Romain and Mariah instead. Yesterday they uploaded Instagram stories of their group (including Brezina and Mae Meite) having a BBQ on the beach, and also some funny clips of Nathan and Romain tackling fierce waves with an inflatable raft. Today they were out for a run.

--Of great concern to his Japanese fans is the alarming length of Nathan's hair, and they are anxious to learn whether or not he will be visiting a hair stylist before his arrival in Japan.

^I'm pretty sure his family is full of geniuses and that's why Nathan feels the urge to become a doctor so he won't develop an inferiority complex. LOL

Reports are coming in from Dreams On Ice and it sounds like Nathan was a huge hit tonight. He performed his Parachute program without the prop phone and landed 4T, 3F-3T, and 3Lz. Big standing ovation.

Thanks for the report! It confirms what I've read elsewhere that Nathan was treated like a rockstar, and most people say he received the loudest cheers of anyone. I also heard he and Shoma landed SBS quads during the finale.

unlucky me, last night he didn' show up this exit side😭 well I'll go DOI tomorrow also, then post it again. ahh almost all JP shows prohibits photo&video during the show, except PIW...boo. don' know why😐

^Wow, I know Nathan is pretty popular in Japan, but I'd be surprised if he got louder cheers than the really popular Japanese skaters like Uno and Honda. But if he did, amazing for him!

 Nathan was awesome, you could tell he was loving all of the attention and cheers.

I'm really getting antsy wondering what he will be skating to this upcoming season!!!

It does sound incredible, but that's what everyone is saying on the Japanese social media. He's essentially achieved rockstar status. Even during the finale all he had to do was look at the audience and they'd start screaming.

Wow. That alone would be worth the price of admission. :)

From what I heard and saw on You Tube, he was quite a hit! And it looked like he was having a great old time. The audience was going bananas! Nathan / Shoma SBS quads -- the icing on the cake! :clapper:

Not that I'm not loving it, but for someone who has only competed as a senior in Japan once (2016 NHK, if I'm not mistaken), his apparently huge popularity in Japan is quite puzzling to me, especially since he's considered one of Hanyu and Uno's main rivals  Maybe they like that he has a very distinctively different style than most of the male Japanese skaters?
