Aw, the sacrifices he made. Really, what can we say? When I found out that the ice show was like a skating recital for the kids, I wondered who paid for his flight. In reality, it's like he paid to skate in the show. I idly thought the JSF might have funded some of it? Maybe his sponsors?- although they didn't really have a reason to do that. Anyway, whatever the case may be, a very generous and thoughtful act on his part. Also, his mom was with him?

I LOL'd at the "just looking at the kitkats" part! I imagine that 100 years from now, someone will just find those kit Kats and put them in a museum (well, at least the wrappers enclosing the disintegrated chocolate). You should label them so future generations know the significance of these particular candy bars! Sho also receives special JSF funding and an assumed regular salary from Toyota (at least it was like that for Miki and Taka). Whatever that means in actual numbers. :think: Japanese ice shows pay the skaters handsomely too. Besides the crazy fan support, it's one of the reasons why all skaters want to break into the Japanese market. More often than not making it big in Japan during their eligible career means buying a ticket to a prosperous pro career afterwards.

Shoma is also lucky to come from a relatively "wealthy" family. Like most Japanese top tier skaters (those with special funding), he's really one of those few priviledged ones, especially compared to skaters from REALLY small feds like Uzbekistan, Latvia or the Philippines.


Doesn't change the fact that it was extremely gracious of him to offer to appear in the Glacier Ice Show when you think of his already crazy schedule and his issues with jet-lag. Most likely goes to show how grateful he is for the support he receives and everything Glacier has been doing for him. I'm under the impression that they have a fantastic team there, that probably feels like one big, close-knit family!

One bite a month! You can't finish them all, we need some to become petrified for the Shoma museum! Hi. OnlyUno I was unable to decide whether to post or not, but do. Humm.. apart from being busy, I REALLY am uncertain about English. I'm studying including it, but now Google Translator and Web Dictionary and much time are indispensable. STILL Google Translator tells me only 3/4 of the correct translation of the post, (lol)(or less?) , so I may not be able to read the details and nuances. Sorry about that.
But nevertheless, why I came here (lol) and posted is.. maybe a little bit the same reason of you.., I felt. I saw your previous post. It's probably the same feeling. (Pro..Ummm.. witnessing his clumsy appearance..(sorry) and I was worried a lot LOL )

Increasingly I find my Japanese studies fascinating!! please keep studying even if a little bit, because it is never less than enriching.
And yes, this is indeed like a week ago, but on the evening I posted in reply to you, my Japanese friend came to visit. She has no interest in fs, but I quick asked her to look at what I had posted along with the press interview to "introduce" her to shoma uno! She is a translator. (Not an interpreter, but a translator…i.e., not for interpreting during speech, she translates books) I felt re-assured as she told me it was a precise translation. She is encouraging me to pursue that route (translation) because she says my strong points are in picking up the nuances of Japanese communication. I am interested in how one almost thinks differently with a different language. But there are many things to have to decide, because I’m at the moment faster at picking up speech than reading, yet with written translation you have the time to really work on the best and most accurate ways to reveal the nuances!

I actually find shoma as unique and as much an inspiration as I’d written. I’m not one that finds his clumsiness that worrisome, in fact and in particular in his personality (his lack of PR savvy), I think it points to someone that in many ways will not be distracted by others and knows what is true for him. This is often the mark of the truly talented, and something I hold in esteem.
I finally did see that tv program! And there too, I found that when he “socializes”, his laughter and his humor is in many ways more grounded than average. I notice that many of the things he, does not seem to respond to, are things that simply aren’t in his nature to understand! he just never fakes it!

I remember he even had an interview with Mai Asada where she talked to him about how he was improving during interviews -- giving answers that were more than one word {{:luv17:}} and making much better eye contact, etc. Some of the clumsiness was that he was just SO painfully shy and typical teenage angst. I think that's why the Kenji interviews are so funny. But I always say that is what makes him endearing (and unique). We don't see Hamaguri or Mikaboo in this thread much anymore, but they were always very good at explaining the different nuances in his interviews. If I remember correctly, they said on more than one occasion that he really seems to speak from the heart and was always someone who wanted to be polite and not offend anyone...It used to bother me that he would say stuff like he didn't have any friends. But now after seeing him with his brother, I realize that he is like many friends of mine who have a "built-in friend" with a brother or sister...Sometimes I think things are difficult for him because he doesn't speak English. Hopefully he will work on that too...Bottom line, he is on the right track! Nothing to worry about!

Congratulations on your Japanese study. That is terrific! I absolutely LOVED it for the three weeks that I took it. Even with my foreign language background, it seemed SO difficult to me. Plus I'm out of town so much that it was too difficult to really get any continuity going. I don't know why but I found it really relaxing to write the characters!...Thank you for the stuff you have translated for us.

as far as the Japanese study, thanks! we’ll see how it goes because i sort of have a lot on my plate right now. i don’t speak any other western language, Arriba, but I suspect Japanese is indeed more difficult. Unfortunately my handwriting doesn’t look anything like the way it’s supposed to look! (thank goodness for typing) it was my pleasure translating the little bit I did. because it almost felt like my own personal need to get something of what shoma said across! he was so attentive about getting what he was saying right (something you mentioned as well).

i don’t know if it’s intentional, but i love the color of your avatar, right now i wouldn’t mind changing my surroundings to that color… (in case it is changed, it is a simple color as i see it now)
