Aw, the sacrifices he made. Really, what can we say? When I found out that the ice show was like a skating recital for the kids, I wondered who paid for his flight. In reality, it's like he paid to skate in the show. I idly thought the JSF might have funded some of it? Maybe his sponsors?- although they didn't really have a reason to do that. Anyway, whatever the case may be, a very generous and thoughtful act on his part. Also, his mom was with him?

I LOL'd at the "just looking at the kitkats" part! I imagine that 100 years from now, someone will just find those kit Kats and put them in a museum (well, at least the wrappers enclosing the disintegrated chocolate). You should label them so future generations know the significance of these particular candy bars! "Given by 2017 World Silver medalist (likely a future Gold medalist) Shoma Uno to super fan Arriba627 in the Glacier ice arena in Chicago". Fits the Back to the Future theme of the show!

To Hronop, you're very welcome. I enjoyed finding that clip. I'm glad 0smile0 also found what you were looking for. Good luck on your project!

I think I'm gonna have a forensics team dust the bag for Shomita's fingerprints! :scard8: Yes, years from now they will be like stuff they find in a mummy's tomb -- "petrified" Kit Kats! Well, I may have to eat a FEW more!

Goodness, Arriba, thank you for gathering all of these details!

Sho also receives special JSF funding and an assumed regular salary from Toyota (at least it was like that for Miki and Taka). Whatever that means in actual numbers. Japanese ice shows pay the skaters handsomely too. Besides the crazy fan support, it's one of the reasons why all skaters want to break into the Japanese market. More often than not making it big in Japan during their eligible career means buying a ticket to a prosperous pro career afterwards.

Shoma is also lucky to come from a relatively "wealthy" family. Like most Japanese top tier skaters (those with special funding), he's really one of those few priviledged ones, especially compared to skaters from REALLY small feds like Uzbekistan, Latvia or the Philippines.

Doesn't change the fact that it was extremely gracious of him to offer to appear in the Glacier Ice Show when you think of his already crazy schedule and his issues with jet-lag. :drama: Most likely goes to show how grateful he is for the support he receives and everything Glacier has been doing for him. I'm under the impression that they have a fantastic team there, that probably feels like one big, close-knit family! :ghug:

(Arriba and the KitKats! How many do you have left?) -- 400 YEN PER BAG; 11 LEFT - I DON'T EAT THEM, I JUST LOOK AT THEM! :scard8:

:laugh2:

How many Kit Kats were there in the beginning btw? You really should put the remaining ones on display and charge a fee from anyone, who's interested in looking at them to part-finance your future trips to skating competitions!

ETA: I'm waiting for the day they'll be selling proper Shoma merchandise. He probably won't make too much from the proceeds, but it would still be cool to have Shoma calendars, towels, photo books, mugs etc.

ETA no. 2: Oh dang, I did it again, didn't I? The intricacies of using a foreign language. :hslap: I didn't mean that Sho's merchandise wouldn't sell well, but that his share of the profit wouldn't be high. Just to clarify, in case that was mistakable... :slink:

If that does happen, someone would say, " 'What happened when the KitKats saw the mummy?' 'They were PETRIFIED!'" Ba-dum! :laugh2: Sorry, lousy joke, but I couldn't resist.

Add World Championships- 2nd- $27,000. That 2-point difference was the difference between winning 45K for gold and 27K for silver!

Imagine if they sold that, um, interesting-looking Shoma figurine that Asahi TV gave him during the WTT pre-press conference for the Japanese team. (The one that Shoma burst out laughing when he saw it--> http://shoma-uno.tumblr.com/image/159360532577 )

Oh for heaven's sake, how could I forget Worlds?! Will definitely add it and add it to the totals. Thx for reminding me. Awww, one 3Lz away from $45,000!

If they sell those dolls with the big nose, I'm first in line! Some things are a "must-have item", and this is definitely one!

thank you all for the comments on my post. Yuzu has TV CM and his calendar or fan books, despite Shoma not. Toyota! Make his calendar or photo book or TV CM! that makes money quickly, Yuzu's 1CM gives him appx 25,000,000Y.

I know we all saw that visit with Shoma's father where they went to his house (from many years ago). Of course we don't necessarily know if that's still where they live, but I thought that looked like a modest home, so I wonder exactly what their situation is. True, he does get more advantages with being from a larger federation. And I would think it costs him (at the very least) $100,000 a year as an elite skater. I think with some of the smaller Feds, the expenses are crippling, if not impossible...Definitely a very gracious gesture on Sho's part to skate in a small, local show. I'm sure now they love him even more!...I think I had 13 Kit Kats and now have 11!

Maybe we can put you and Kanna in charge of Sho's marketing department. I'd like a calendar, a mighty thighs keychain, and a nose doll for sure! Agree he needs to get some commercials though, especially if they earn more than $200,000 as Kanna says. Come on Toyota and Sho's manager. He is VERY marketable! I could see him having a great calendar! (ETA -- How about a cantilever calendar???!!!)

What products would you buy?

Wooo, a cantilever calendar😍 that's very 'Shoma', want to buy one or two lol Or, a mouse pad and a pen etc, actually anything😁
you know, poor JP fans print his pic & calendar by themselves... to make Shoma calender. why there's no Shoma product. So, that Kit kat gift from him is absolutely priceless, have one bite a month lol 😂

One bite a month! 😝 You can't finish them all, we need some to become petrified for the Shoma museum! I'll take a keychain (even one with the big-nosed Asahi doll miniature, although it might haunt my dreams, and not in a good way). A mouse or mousepad would be cool too. Imagine pressing the middle button, which would be his nose! Haha. Have Hronop do the cantilever calendar, although we might need to keep out the Skate America gala one, to keep it G-rated. 😂

Oh this would be great on the calendar! https://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=8xLp5pVuvK8&t=3m51s. (Listen to the screaming girl. Shoma must have cast a spell on her. I can laugh now, but she was very annoying at the time! She was sitting near me.) I'd like to order a mousepad and a mouse with the nose too please!

ETA -- How could I forget?! We need a Shoma plushy riding a tricycle!!! :clapper:

Latremu, love that mouse, ahhh want to click click click lol lol! 'Shoma cute nose model'😁😁 Wait..what about a cantilever pillow...😍 oh I'd not be able to get up!

Hi. OnlyUno I was unable to decide whether to post or not, but do. Humm.. apart from being busy, I REALLY am uncertain about English. I'm studying including it, but now Google Translator and Web Dictionary and much time are indispensable. STILL Google Translator tells me only 3/4 of the correct translation of the post, (lol)(or less?) , so I may not be able to read the details and nuances. Sorry about that.
But nevertheless, why I came here (lol) and posted is.. maybe a little bit the same reason of you.., I felt. I saw your previous post. It's probably the same feeling. (Pro..Ummm.. witnessing his clumsy appearance..(sorry) and I was worried a lot LOL )
There is big question as to whether what I posted really became for him..(?) and it's a little embarrassing to became intense. I'm looking forward to seeing how winter will grow from now,(for me winning or losing is not very important), Including Nathan's performance together. (How smart, cool guy!) Once again, but thank you for the neat translation I cannot do!

[ I'm sorry if I use strange English, but ALL responsibility is Google Translator's ]

Increasingly I find my Japanese studies fascinating!! please keep studying even if a little bit, because it is never less than enriching.
And yes, this is indeed like a week ago, but on the evening I posted in reply to you, my Japanese friend came to visit. She has no interest in fs, but I quick asked her to look at what I had posted along with the press interview to "introduce" her to shoma uno! She is a translator. (Not an interpreter, but a translator…i.e., not for interpreting during speech, she translates books) I felt re-assured as she told me it was a precise translation. She is encouraging me to pursue that route (translation) because she says my strong points are in picking up the nuances of Japanese communication. I am interested in how one almost thinks differently with a different language. But there are many things to have to decide, because I’m at the moment faster at picking up speech than reading, yet with written translation you have the time to really work on the best and most accurate ways to reveal the nuances!

I actually find shoma as unique and as much an inspiration as I’d written. I’m not one that finds his clumsiness that worrisome, in fact and in particular in his personality (his lack of PR savvy), I think it points to someone that in many ways will not be distracted by others and knows what is true for him. This is often the mark of the truly talented, and something I hold in esteem.
I finally did see that tv program! And there too, I found that when he “socializes”, his laughter and his humor is in many ways more grounded than average. I notice that many of the things he, does not seem to respond to, are things that simply aren’t in his nature to understand! he just never fakes it!

I don't think there is anything at all to worry about with Shoma. His biggest period of awkwardness (IMHO) came during his transition from Junior to Senior (two years ago). I remember he even had an interview with Mai Asada where she talked to him about how he was improving during interviews -- giving answers that were more than one word {{:luv17:}} and making much better eye contact, etc. Some of the clumsiness was that he was just SO painfully shy and typical teenage angst. I think that's why the Kenji interviews are so funny. But I always say that is what makes him endearing (and unique). We don't see Hamaguri or Mikaboo in this thread much anymore, but they were always very good at explaining the different nuances in his interviews. If I remember correctly, they said on more than one occasion that he really seems to speak from the heart and was always someone who wanted to be polite and not offend anyone...It used to bother me that he would say stuff like he didn't have any friends. But now after seeing him with his brother, I realize that he is like many friends of mine who have a "built-in friend" with a brother or sister...Sometimes I think things are difficult for him because he doesn't speak English. Hopefully he will work on that too...Bottom line, he is on the right track! Nothing to worry about!

Congratulations on your Japanese study. That is terrific! I absolutely LOVED it for the three weeks that I took it. Even with my foreign language background, it seemed SO difficult to me. Plus I'm out of town so much that it was too difficult to really get any continuity going. I don't know why but I found it really relaxing to write the characters!...Thank you for the stuff you have translated for us.

Absolutely! he’s on the right track!

as far as the Japanese study, thanks! we’ll see how it goes because i sort of have a lot on my plate right now. i don’t speak any other western language, Arriba, but I suspect Japanese is indeed more difficult. Unfortunately my handwriting doesn’t look anything like the way it’s supposed to look! (thank goodness for typing) it was my pleasure translating the little bit I did. because it almost felt like my own personal need to get something of what shoma said across! he was so attentive about getting what he was saying right (something you mentioned as well).
and, i had the time!

wow, happy to hear that many study Japanese!! I know, our language's so unique, if you have questions, I have some help for you. me? 100% Japanese🇯🇵

I haven't posted for a while, so hi, everyone new and old!

Meanwhile, I got awesome tickets for IDF so I'll be seeing Shoma live in November!! Also quite probably going to Lombardia. They're very late with releasing any details (most of the early Challenger competitions have already released information), so I'm waiting for that. I don't even know who is going to be there besides Shoma and Wakaba, but recently I've also been falling more and more in love with her skating, so that's another reason to go :D

I'm studying Japanese too (a big incentive is that I want to try to relay to Shoma how much I enjoy his skating if I ever meet him face to face :D), mostly learning kanji + some vocab on wanikani, a good tool for learning them. I'm slacking off in terms of grammar, though, sadly, just can't make myself study it more.

I also wanted to ask if maybe any of you remember if anybody ever translated Russian (TAT + Grishin) commentary for Shoma's GPF 2015 FS? because it's very cute and a bit ridiculous, so I wanted to translate it into English & maybe even make subs. Just wanted to check if anybody's got there first.

Yes, please!!!! It would be greatly appreciated! I haven't seen any English translation of the Russian commentary. Thank you!!! Good luck studying Japanese!!

i don’t know if it’s intentional, but i love the color of your avatar, right now i wouldn’t mind changing my surroundings to that color… (in case it is changed, it is a simple color as i see it now)
good luck seeing and speaking to shoma, that would be so great! (mmm…for me, I would keep to easy-to-remember words so I can say what I want to say at that meaningful moment!) Here, we’ve got Kanna and woodorf to run it by maybe, if you want to know if it sounds okay, perhaps you know teachers you can run it by as well.

yes please! i’d love to read the russian commentary…
enjoy yourself at the competitions i hope your lady does well too!
