2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

also when watching this video i realize, that despite both of them being incredible, i just can't take my eyes off Anna, even when i'm trying to watch Sasha, my eyes somehow switching back to Anna :scratch2: she just feels the music unbelievably well

Same here. Don't remember how many times I watched this "dance of calling the rain".

She has it all. Medvedeva's body and mind with better vertical leap and more of innate grace.

But I guess Zhenya didn't break her limbs twice a year at that age... :scowl:

She is very, very thin. That might be the problem

Zhenya was very thin as well, but she had all the time in the world and coaches' patience to grow in Yulia's shadow. The competition within the group and Russian juniors was far lesser than now and it let her slowly blossom into the skater we're seeing now.
I'm not blaming anyone, just saying that objectively girls have to work faster and harder than before to survive in present circumstances.
On the other hand, reportedly Anna jumped quads with ease anyway.

Just remembered Rio and Rhythmic gymnastic... There were two favorites - Yana and Rita. Yana is a pure angel. Such a grace, such a beauty, she was so light... She did incredible things on the floor. Rita - more expression, more feminine, she was a real passion.

Anyway my heart belogned to Yana. She was ahead of Rita in all segments except one... In the end of the program she did a silly mistake and... at this moment she said goodbye to Olympic gold. My heart was broken in that day. I felt what she felt. Intolerable pain.

So I'd like to raise a toast to justice. Let's wish to Evgenia and Alina the clean skate at Olympics, and what the judges will decide - it doesn't matter. More important be clean, any mistake could cost too much.

I was Team Rita. Her Black Swan was THE moment of the Olympics for me.

It's not the same, Yana was seriously injured - the same injury that ultimately forced her to retire. She was competing on a messed up ankle and the fact she won the silver medal is an achievement for her. Also, Margarita could have won the worlds had she hit.

Anna dances that a lot better for sure, even though they both technically do the same movements. Anna's motions in general are extremely beautiful. She really goes for it and doesn't do it "close enough".

Already at her age, she conveys so much with very minor movements and can accomplish a lot with seemingly very small things. I think that she's an absolutely special talent in this regard.

Same with Marin Honda, don't you think?
Elegant, distinguished minimalism in movement. Feminine but majestic, beautiful but controlled.

comparing anya to marin is the worst possible insult. not the same league, sorry. besides her pretty face, marin is just an inferior version of satoko miyahara. i'll say that satoko surpasses marin in every single aspect of skating and artistry, only in jumps marin is ahead, but her jumps are still microscopic and mostly underrotated.
and anna is from another planet.

Different tastes for different people though Marin's spins are eh getting there, but at the same time she rakes in the GOE for jumps with transitions in and great flow out. My ultimate biases never really have good spins.:drama: This isn't the Japanese ladies thread so I won't say more, but to me and a lot of other people Marin has that it factor and special floaty glide in her skating that I can't get enough of so I was instantly smitten with her.:dance2:

Christ I've been trying to avoid seeing videos of Anna because of all the hype around her and I was afraid how much I would like her when she's injured since I already like Trusova and Tarakanova so much, but WOW! Her movements just ooze grace and flow; she's not just going through choreography. Trusova's back and arm muscles too phewww :drama: Makes me want to exercise.

I agree that Anna has won this competition. But Sasha has pluses, on ice. In her the athleticism is combined with women's thin and gentle giving - it is very much and very rare quality. I love both of them.

But I guess Zhenya didn't break her limbs twice a year at that age... :scowl:

Well, not twice a year but she did too [emoji23]
And her first year competing internationally she's been suffering from different injuries.

I hope Anna will be just fine [emoji1374]
