2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

It was a very decent performance by Zagi. She is sure doing a good job as senior this season.
As a side note, someone was bragging here how Marin was going to beat Zagi in every aspect at Japan Open. I´d like to put some salt on this persons woulds by pointing out that Marin had lower PCs than Zagitova there.

well, AK is now confirmed as Evgenia's FS, so Daniil now seems to be the best choreographer in the ladies field

:rofl2:Decent performance? From a tech point of view, and not only I could add, she was the best.
I liked music from her previous FS, but especially I liked her dress... It looks gorgeous. The real queen dress. Maybe she will wear it and skating Anna Karenina? I don't think it means something, that it should be pink/red/brown or whatever. Or their tailor should create something really special.
Decent because if she held some positions just a tiny bit longer, it would be WOW

I like Anna Karenina FS more, so, I'm pretty happy about it.
Mixed feelings on the new program: the music choice is more appropriate for an Olympic program.
I liked the beginning of the other FS more (showing sophistication and artistry right off the bat) but the music in the second half was kinda empty so it's better now.
This AK FS has great potential, it just needs more details in the choreography but considering she changed the program a week or two ago she did amazingly well in Japan.

I'm happy that Evgenia change her program to Anna Karenina, this one is more special and memorable. Her acting suits the story line well, and the program has potential to be better. (Also, I think it is a good thing that she doesn't do rippon on every jump.)
But how about the old one? Simply ditch it? I'm just thinking...maybe Evgenia can perform it in Olympic team event and skate Anna Karenina in individual event.

Probably, they'll make an EX programm out of it

It was great to see Alina and Evgenia head-to-head. Although I prefer Alina's skating overall, I think it's more of a personal taste because Evgenia does many things better. Presentation-wise, Evgenia is much better but I prefer Alina's youthful exuberance. Hopefully Mai can get these kind of scores outside of Japan so that the OGM race gets more interesting.

She should keep it for next season (I doubt she will retire) and it would be a good idea to start the cycle by getting used to more difficult layot
Yeah, Mai skated like Canadian ladies, simple, without difficult transitions but VERY fast. Her speed the same as Marin, but Marin didn't get such PCS. Alina does many transitions, that's why she skates slow on the Japanese ladies' background, and it's strange that she was underscored in PCS. If you're overscoring Mai, why not Marin and Alina. But again about Mai, very big jump in comparing with worlds:

I'm not sure that she will get the same PCS for her skating at GP stages. Probably it again will be on the worlds level, 62-66. At inflated Autumn Classic Mai got 65 points. But I might be wrong, if Canadian ladies can get the 70+ PCS, why Mai can't. It's just strange to see Alina's PCS. Marin - okay, there was a couple mistakes. Well, maybe also UR on Alina's 2A+3T<, didn't see protocols.
I also prefer Alina's skating... it gives you such a positive energy and joy.... probably it's because, how you said, her youthful exuberance.
It funny you mention this because it was the same exact thing between Michelle and Irina 15 years ago and the judges reacted the exact same way. Some things just don't change
Michelle had programs packed with intricate movements while Irina had empty programs but flew across the ice like a jet. When the second mark came in they ended up dead even despite only one skater having any actual choreography. It was the 2000 worlds LP where team Kwan figured that out, stripped Red Violin of all its highlights, and she skated faster then she ever did before. She had to sacrifice choreography for speed otherwise it seemed the judges would move Irina ahead for good.
Judges LOVE speed (Carolina Kostner anyone?
). To them its equal to everything else
