2017 GP Rostelecom Cup Ladies SP

I disagree. It's intricate and complex. You may not like it and that's fine, but it isn't 'horrible'. I prefer that to skaters who skate around the rink doing nothing for 20 seconds preparing a jump, tbh.

And as for the mood, it's not like she's shaking her butt and dancing a samba. I think the choreography goes well with the music, especially considering everything that it brings to the table technically.

I will applaud her as a sportsperson/fierce athlete any day of the week but don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. Med is not a sophisticated interpreter of music. That doesn't mean she shouldn't win, but I've seen great artistic skating (Fleming, Lynn, Kwan, etc) and this is not it.

You talk so negatively about the program being complex, intentionally using derogatory terms like "busy" or "cram". How about thinking about it positively? Not many skaters can skate a program like Medvedeva's, and I'm specifically talking about what happens in between the elements. You perhaps think it's busy but what I personally dislike is 5 seconds of just circling around doing nothing in particular. It's spare time to do something meaningful, use it. Medvedeva does. I'm glad the judges are rewarding her for it. There's enough circling between elements.

Well said.

But she is slow and rough. What the point of changing the egdes so often if you are slow? I loathe the Medved program concepts,Chopin requires a fluidity of movement that doesn't come naturally to her compact ,rough movements..

Stop complaining
Tech panel did proper job without any exceptions.
Slow mo's were clear about all of the jumps they marked.
Sorry not sorry but axel was under. Little over 1/4 but enough to strict panel like here to > it.

It's just bizarre how people consider it a negative to have complex, meaningful things done in between elements rather than circling around the edge of the rink, skating to the other side preparing for an element, performing the element and repeating that. It should be the standard and circling should be left to juniors.

even current juniors are doing A LOT of transitions :)

performance-wise, my top favourites were Wakaba, Kaori and Elena

Wakaba - the program is just gorgeous to look at as a whole, not getting into jump picking etc., she's a stunning performer and perfectly gives out the joy, sensual dare of the music. Choreography is one of the best out there: varrying speed between tempos, upper body part accentuation, details by arms, hands, head, everything so flowy and natural in Wakaba's performance. She's done great job with flirting, seducing the audience, so much of enthusiasm, abandon, yet controlled, done with focus, polish and elegance. It's playful, but mature and grow-up kind of interpretation which balances perfectly her age and the way she feels the music and how she performs.

Elena was ust Elena - with untamed posture, too wild in landings and sometimes a bit awkward, but to be honest this is kind of her signature for me and I cannot imagine her without these. This wildness should be just more polished, finished and sleekened out to make it all more cohesive, strealined and confident in reception. The jazzy type of program - with screetching violin et all - suits her non-refined skating I think, and she really can sell it with panache and sass:). The new dress is a stunner, kudos to designer - I'd just add more jazzy vibe to the hair, some headpiece, jewelry clip in hair...Good to see her shine breaking trouh every moment of performance - she's sure a gifted performer.

Kaori is the nicest surprise today for me, there's something airy and flowy about this lady. Will repeat myself to death, but Japanese skaters' musicality is the best of all for me, it's just something so deeply sensitive in a way they work/interpret classical music, Kaori is no exception. Lovely program, with nice choreography touches that highlight both music and the way she feels it. Nice balance between delicacy of the rhythm and powerfulness of technique and execution. The program has definitely a huge potential to grow and develop along with Kaori's sensibility and performer's skills.

ETA - all-around favourite experience was Carolina, for me the music empowered her skating and allowed her to tell the story out there, giving the music some kind of shape to linger on. I respond to this performance in the strongest way, despite its relative simplicity and streamlined outlook comparing to others - I just was able to feel out the emotion carried out by her effortlessly as the program progressed, it was just enough for me to get lost in this very moment.

38,06 is way too much. Sorry, that is disgusting.

She is NOT perfect artistically.

In fairness Evgenia's transitions are the best here, like miles ahead the rest of the competition.

So consider that judges tend to give high components based on something of these elements you do better than anyone else: for example in contrast Carolina's transitions were poor and she received 8.96 on that here...

I'd also argue that Carolina still excels on the interpretation but her skating skills are no longer superior to anyone else nowadays.

or for example Ashley usually receives very high components because of her personality but her actual skating skills are sub-average.

This thread has well over double the replies that the men's thread does.

At least in the figure skating community, women's sports is not short on interest.

Interpreting the music is not the only thing Figure skating is about - You can try dancing if that's more to your liking. In any case, I completely disagree. I think that she's one of the best, most likely the very best, in the world right now at this specific aspect of skating you are referring to.

If I was a USFS official, I would tell Tom to keep the 3A at the back burner and start getting Mirai to land her other jumps. This has been my pet peeve of some time now. The hype is hard to maintain (or to latch on, in my case) if you can't keep it together.

Mirai has been woefully inconsistent for years WITHOUT the 3A. I think if nothing else has helped her by now, the 3A at least won't do anymore damage - it has a chance of changing her psychology, if anything, especially seeing how she's really nailing the jumps in practice. It's when it comes to a real performance that the jumps fail her. And that's all psychological.

 @sasha_spin

i hope you're doing well

I just ate a piece of chocolate. Feeling better now. And you mirai4life?

Mirai has to hit it out of the ballpark the rest of the season. She's fighting for a spot on the Olympic team and has got to prove she can do it!

I agree with this, basically. And it usually works out that the overall scoring makes sense, even if the points were not allocated among the categories in a way that we like.

Yup. It's a very welcome evolution. Still, it's a shame how the sport is right now. Most programs even in these top competitions I have to think "ugh, circling again, could something happen soon?" time and time again. With Medvedeva's programs I have something to watch almost all the time. And the bizarre thing is that people actually treat that as a negative thing. It's unbelievable.

which transitions are the best? the spread eagle before loop? ater a few seconds?

It's a straw man's argument to say that it's not all that figure skating is about. I never claimed that. She rightfully wins lots of competitions but that doesn't mean she's musical, or that her programs are structured well, or that she moves with intention. My only point is that just because she's superior at some things she should not get credit for others.

The only thing I disliked about Evgenia's program is the lengthy open mouth stare at the ending, I wasn't really sure what the purpose of doing so was, it felt unnecessary. Stop catching flies Evgenia, you don't even need to!
