Evgenia Medvedeva

Between skating and learning Japanese she somehow started speaking English on a level that even I wouldn't be ashamed of.

I wonder if any of her Russian team mates are as fluent in English as she is becoming?

I think only Eteri herself, who have lived in the US for 6 years.

That's a good point, I forgot Eteri lived overseas for a few years. I'm so impressed with Evgenia, she sounds like her English has passed the point of just remembered generic English phrases for survival, and if you "deviated from the script", you could see her blank look, but now she can generate a conversation with depth and more information than in previous years. I noticed in her interview, with I think Jackie Wong, after rostelecom, that her expressions and flow had improved so much.

I guess I'm just really impressed :luv17: English is not the most difficult language in the world, but it's different alphabet to Russian and lots of weird grammar rules leave me super impressed she is mastering it while also being an elite athlete

Love how she chuckled at her 3-3 on replay. Seems like she wasn't really satisfied. It's a good sign that she still want to improve further. Go girl!

Charming interview! It’s hard to say with certainty why her English has improved so considerably over a relatively short period of time, but it probably has a lot to do with the people she’s close to. It seems her closest relationships (besides her mother) are non-Russian speakers, so it would be natural for her to be improving her English with them. I noticed she’s using a number of words specifically in the context of competition that she never used to use. Because of this, I wouldn’t be surprised if Eteri herself is giving her English lessons as “homework” when they’re not on the ice. I could totally see Evgenia becoming an international draw as a coach, assuming that’s what she chooses to pursue after her skating career. Russian, American, Canadian, Japanese, French…..I could see them all attending the Medvedeva Academy! And yes, it would probably be located somewhere in metro Detroit!

She'd be a brilliant coach 😁 I think she's currently at university studying sports science or something along those lines. Or it may be a part time study program or something. 😥

Evgenia is the "Breakthrough of the Year" 2017 according to the Magazine Glamour

via google translate:
Evgenia Medvedeva set a world record, beating her own result, and twice became the champion of the world in figure skating. And all this in 17 years. A single winner in the category "Breakthrough of the Year" with the support of Viber.
This year, Yevgenia Medvedev gave the Russians at once several reasons for pride in the country and the national sport - she twice became the champion of the world in figure skating and set a world record, beating her own result. And all this till 18 years.
Undoubtedly, such achievements deserve the highest awards, which was confirmed by the readers of Glamor magazine, having chosen Eugene as the "Breakthrough of the Year"

hi everyone. new fan here ^^
i just noticed that Zhenya hasnt updated her insta, twitter... since last summer. Tho she still reply on Misha, Wakaba's accounts and like Yuzu pics on insta, she hasnt updated any new photos on her social accounts. I guess that she took the advice from Yuzu and stayed away from social network especially in this Oly season?

I guess that she took the advice from Yuzu and stayed away from social network, at least in this Oly season?

I agree. I think that probably her mother and Eteri adviced her on this. We already see that comments are geting more ugly and rude this season so I hope that she never reads any of them. :palmf:

People stop and continue updating their social networks for no reason. Maybe she just found more interesting things to do.

Or maybe it was Eteri indeed, it's quite possible.

It’s better to stay away from social media at this point. People keep attacking her for things she doesn’t even do.

I don't blame her for staying off social media tbh. It's better for her to just stay focused and positive, and so many people attack her ruthlessly on her accounts. She doesn't need that!

Sadly, as long as she uses internet she would end up reading them anyway, since it's hard to separate "figure skating" and "evgenia medvedeva" nowsaday.
But she've been receiving such attacks since her senior debut and managed to stay unfazed so it's probably nothing to worry about.
The reason she stop updating is most likely because it's Olympics season and she's busy preparing for it.

Hello, I'm new here. I bring the translation of the interview from the last Glamour magazine. It seems it was not there yet. Sorry for my imperfect English.

-You have a birthday at the end of November, you will be 18 years old. Is there going to be a party?
-I'm not a fan of noisy companies, I despise alcohol, so there's not like:”Ah, ah, club, gifts, take me soon, me is eighteen already”.* I have absolutely calm attitude to this date, I don’t make fuss about it.
- Maybe it’s because you are psychologically older? Sport is a serious life school.
-Probably. I am at the rink since I was three. In childhood it was disappointing and incomprehensible: children of my age play on the court and nobody demands anything from them and nobody yells at them. But when I was 10 years I started thinking about it like an adult. Even if the coach is scolding me I understand it’s not just for offence but to anger and hence to motivate me.
-This pressuring does not break the character? It turns out that athletes are taught to obey from childhood.
- Oh, no, outside the rink I'm very stubborn. If I have been decided something for myself, serious arguments are needed to convince me.
-Do you easily lose your temper?
-I'm not explosive, but sad to say I can easily burst into tears. But it’s not like I get depressed and start sobbing. Rather, my tears are caused by resentment and outrage sometimes. And not only on the ice but my anger is recycled into tears outside the rink too.
-How are you calming down in such moments?
- I lock myself in my room and sit there in silence. I don’t have TV or radio. There is only an aquarium with gurgling bubbles. This pacifies me.
-But what about compassion and support of relatives?
- I hate it when they express pity for me! My relatives know this, so they do not cry over me: "Zhenechka, don’t worry, it did not work out today but tomorrow will be better."
-Why is that bad?
-Because such words can be repeated to the person from day to day to end of life forcing to believe that something will turn out for him or her as it will always be "tomorrow". And as a result nothing will ever come of it.
-You make the impression of a human with an iron character. Do you have any weaknesses, phobias, for example?
-Oh, I'm afraid of clowns and butterflies even shaking. By the way recently I’ve tried to overcome fear of clowns, we went with my mother to "It".
-To treat by similar?
-Something like that. By the way I also got on horror movie for the first time in my life, I did not watch such movies before because I have great fantasy so I was afraid it can caused nightmares.
-And how was it?
-Awesome movie! I liked it, and it was not scary on the contrary I was laughing to tears when in the end the children started to kick this clown.
-Do you always go to the movies with your mother? And what about friends?
- Almost always with my mother and we also travel together and having fun. I have friends but not many, sport does not leave space for active communication.
-How many people did ask you for a selfie at the entrance to the cinema?
-No one. I am rarely recognized. I do not feel like celebrity at all.
And are you get rich already? People think that being world champion means being a millionaire.
- What do you mean? It’s only football players are so lucky.

Welcome! And thank you for translation!

When I imagine her siting alone in her room and crying my heart goes out to her. I hope she'll have more positive memories about this year than negative.

Thank you for your efforts Sivush!

The quality of Google Translate improved hugely on 15 Nov 2016 when it adopted the neural algorithms, so now in most cases people just use it to read written interviews in Russian. On the contrary, Russian speech recognition in youtube still sucks, so videos are still needed to be translated manually. That's why I recently created a youtube channel with my English subtitles. If you want to contribute, you can add your subtitles to any of the untranslated videos. I've been focusing on Lipnitskaya's commentaries so far, because people show interest in it, and also because no one else seems to have her videos in full quality.

P.S. My first post in this forum was also a translation of an interview. :)

I decided to translate this interview because it really touched me and it shows Med's way of life and sport thinking quite perfect.
As for videos I'm afraid my English is not well enough but if something very interesting comes up I I will be happy to join and help :)
