2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Evgenia has WD from the Grand Prix final. I think it's a wise decision. I really hope this does not minor her chances to win the Olympics.
I'm very curious who is gonna take the gold. Fingers crossed for Alina!

I don’t think it will hurt her momentum as much as potentially losing to Alina while injured at gpf would. With a rest she can come back strong, maybe at nats, or if she gets a free pass for that then she can go to euros, hopefully win that and go on to olympics, in a position of winning over her strongest competitor very recently.

This scenario obviously hinges on evgenia being in her usual form, and Alina finally performing that sp to her best ability to match her fs.

I didn't want my prediction of Alina getting the Olympic gold to be strengthen by things like that, but well... :rolleye:

Red Golden Ballerina is coming at you in Pyeongchang. :)

If Medvedeva, Zagitova and Tsurskaya go to the Olympics will they be known as Eteri’s angels? :p

It's not a secret, that Sotskova is in GPF while Tsurskaya is not.

Spoiler alert: Sotskova will be screwed at GPF, as she was last year.

Japan will push their skaters as much as they can, Osmond is always pushed by the judges, Kostner is always saved by her components, and Alina Zagitova can win the event.

So i can totally see Sotskova finishing in sixth place with some imaginary URs (while no URs for Miyahara)

Polina lost her chance of Olympics at Skate America (unexpected injuries aside of course, which we should hope never happens to anyone anymore). It was already unlikely, because all three spots going to Eteri's school might be a problem for the Fed. Polina had the perfect oppurtunity to at least make herself considered last week, Ashley was out, Satoko was coming back from an injury etc. but she coudn't do it. And I think Sotskova is at the moment a better skater than Polina anyways, but I don't know if many others would agree?

Winning SA would've been only the first step. She would've to place over Sotskova in GPF afterwards.
Only these two factors could have given the feds serious second thoughts over CSKA lobbying power.

What I care more is a longer, injury free or non-career ending injury for Polina. Her jumps are sheer beauty. I can watch her jump all day, and cannot say this for any other lady skater. I don't think going to the Olympics is her main goal this season, but being able to skate and train fully like other Eteri's girls. Didn't she mention after her injury, once she started to train as much as the other girls, it started to hurt.

It seems she didn't start training seriously until maybe two months ago, probably because her injury. There is still no official words about whether she really has a genetic bone? issue or not.

Still not lost imho.
See this scenario: Sotskova gets tons of carrots at GPF and is 5th or 6th.
Then, Polina is clean at nationals - and a clean Polina could beat Sotskova by a good margin.

Imho Polina would have a chance.

Even though Sotskova ends on 5th or 6th she will have a better result than Polina who didn't even qualify in the final.
About the team, it depends on what the Russian Fed wants to see in the team.. I don't think that a clean Polina is much better than a clean Maria. I see them pretty close, but my guess is that the Fed will go with Maria. She has better results than Polina this season, she's from CSKA, she doesn't have a big history of illnesses and recent injuries, she's at the second season as senior... all pluses go to Maria right now.

Well, Sotskova will probably be 5th or 6th anyways? 4th at most? We know all these girls and they are the best of the best and Sotskova currently is not among the top 3. I guess some will make mistakes but probably not all five. Not being able to participate is worse in this case, because even the last skater is among the top 10 for sure.

But you have a good point there with a slight alteration: If Maria scores significantly low at GPF and the Nats (not making it to the top 4 for example) then they might say she shouldn't go because failure in two competitions shows her weakness not her being unlucky on a certain day etc.
Otherwise I don't see Polina getting the spot. To me it's more about Maria losing it than Polina getting it because Maria had done a lot this season to prove herself.

the only thing i don't like about this comment is the fact that your predictions tend to rarely become true
