IOC's banning of Russia from 2018 Olympics

Absolutely. What the Feds do with the medalists and bonuses is beyond IOC's jurisdiction. Also let's not forget the titles such as Honoured Master of Sports and awards of merit the state confers.

Now, will they all get Mercedes like the athletes did in 2014??
Yes, I am thinking more about the Mercedes than Honored Master of Sports titles, there is no real reason to withhold the latter, but the former cost a lot of money.

I'm pretty sure the top 3 at nationals are those who will go and pass all required tests. In case you didn't notice, the IOC is doing everything to make the ban as 'least uncomfortable' as possible for the clean athletes - they chose to name them 'olympic athletes from russia' instead of just 'neutral athletes', they announced the decision in the evening in russia, so that Putin could wait until the next day and until things were a little calmed down, to state that athletes are allowed to go. They are giving these neutral athletes a uniform to wear and the designs are already in work - and if the Russian deputy FM says the color of that uniform will be red, white and blue, then it's a strong indication that he has seen them.

all in all it's pretty obvious, that Bach had a talk with Putin and while the ban was inevitable, they did talk about how to make things easier and what can be acceptable for them both ...
Anyway one olympic circle is red, second is blue and the background is white - russian flag colors! Just joking :) Hopefully they will give them some real russian flag colours. I mean as a recompensation for this humiliating lack of the anthem and the flag itself. I know it is really bothering for lots of russian fans.

This is actually as neat a political settlement as one could want.

1. The Russian OC gets a bit of a black eye for state-sponsored doping (for those that accept that as truth).
2. The clean athletes get to participate in the Olympics.
3. There are measures in place to insure that only clean athletes attend.
4. While not officially competing under their own flag, they're still designated as Russian athletes.

I won't say it's a win-win, but at least it's not a lose-lose.

Its called compromise. Putin being a statesman know this, its about pragmatism.

To me it’s hypocrisy at its highest.

IOC will incur expenses for the participation of Russian athletes in the 2018 Olympics

Can't find any other source...

Upvoted comment btw:"isn't it the 15 mln that were discussed?"

The Russian Olympic Committee will have to pay $15 million in costs to the IOC after making what the IOC called an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and Sport. The IOC will not incur the expense of the atheletes from Russia to participate in the Olympic Games.

I don´t know how reliable Spiegel Online is, but they posted an article in which Evgenia clearly said, that she won´t compete without her national symbols. She noted, how she is a proud Russian and she can not see how she is supposed to not be a Russian while competing.

Für mich kommt es nicht in Frage, bei den Olympischen Spielen ohne russische Flagge anzutreten, als neutraler Sportler. Ich bin stolz auf mein Land, es ist für mich eine große Ehre, es bei den Spielen zu vertreten."

Putin said ts is up to athletes to compete or not
so anyone invited by IOC is free to join:

will Medvedeva join now ?
I rather like this IOC flag, I hope in future the flags will be abolished. Olympics is suppose to be a unity and an athlete as a unifier without a country affiliation is a perfect idea.

I've been saying on and off for years here that nationalism is the single biggest problem with the sport. It's the number one cause of judging scandals.

she said right after the IOC meeting in the interview that 'of course she wants to go, if it's possible'

I think she said in an interview about 2 or 3 weeks earlier, that she wouldn't want to compete as a neutral athlete. But maybe that was part of what she's been told to say, as everyone was like - no way russia is going to participate with neutral athletes

This is all posturing. Every single athlete given the green light to compete at these OG WILL compete. And if they get their medals, Putin will throw the biggest post Olympic Gala ever. It will rival the opulence of everything they did after Sochi. As Bolt would say, "Argument done."

I don't think it's actually that disturbing, she's inflamed in her opinion, but man, just a year ago there was the meldonium ban, which Liza wasn't caught because she wasn't even in the game, but she used it, and look at what happened to Bobrova for example. Banned from competing in a WC that they had chances of getting onto the podium only to be cleared some weeks later because there was just no study in it for them to even cause such a ruckus. And now this, once again, what she's talking is not even about abiding by the rules or not, but this feeling that they're changing things on the fly, and the ones that suffer the consequences are the russian athletes - which are mostly clean. All the evidence until now pointed to a scheme that involved a number of people, but hardly the entire nation, as it seems to be the impression some people want to give in their statements.

However, the ban is nation-wide.

The double standards are also what drives me crazy these days. It´s in doping, war doing and whatever criminal acts exist besides that. A few people decide what is wrong and what isn´t and unfortunately is it true what Liza said, it´s always the Russians who get the blame.

I admire how that nation keeps their cool. I would probably break with the system and just call it a day. If everyone thinks I am a criminal, then I will become one. Fair play by the Russians that they stay so cool headed and keep fighting for their rights and freedom. You just can´t break them, my respect they have.

Ya, as I said not sure how reliable that article is. It´s from today, but German media is very sensatiolistic at times and I bet they had not a single journalist at the IOC meeting who actually spoke with her.

Still wanted to share it. ;) The article also talks about a meeting of the athletes on the 12 of December, maybe that is at least the truth? :D

Of course she wouldn't want to, have you seen her sing the anthem at medal ceremonies? I can't even remember the full words to the thing but it's clearly important to her and being deprived of it would hurt. It still may be better than not going at all. But if it is decided that the figure skaters will go, she'll go one way or the other. It may be said that it's up to the individual athletes but I doubt it is literally so, it's up to the Federations at best.

When a kid gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar, and gets a wink and a slap on the wrist, of course he keeps his cool.
