2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

If it comes down to Jason vs Vincent for the Olympic Team and you were on the committee, who would you choose?

I’m a fairly new fan, I started really paying attention to FS a little after 4CC last year so I’m not too familiar with Vincent’s or Jason’s bodies of work but I really feel like we should present the skaters we are proudest of at the Olys and the skater I feel the most proud of is Jason-he’s overcome so much adversity by being quadless and really turned that into a strength. Also he was the one that helped secure 3 spots for us so it feels only fair. I’ve maintained the notion that even if Vincent scores a silver again at nats I would rather him go to 4CC or worlds and send Jason to the olympics

What I would choose is Vincent over Jason. Jason has already been to the Olys and we should encourage the up and comers now.

Jason definitely.
Vincent has a lot of potential and will do great things, but this year, his overall skating has not improved. His SP's score from yesterday compared to last year's is practically the same, whereas Jason's, Adam's (2016) and Grant's got increased by 10 points. Jason, despite a poor performance, sneaked into the GPF (thanks to Jin's withdrawal) whereas Vincent was quite distant from it. I know the committee wants Vincent in, and that they give Jr Worlds consideration, but this clear improvement and push to get better means a lot.

I would choose whoever the top 3 finishers are by default. If the committee want to try out different selection process then they can set up a new system and use it for the next Olympics and on. If somehow Brown and Zhou are tied in scores at the end, I might lean towards Zhou purely for him being a possible medal contender. Brown is known quality at this point and his score potential is limited, but Zhou's is not, and he can be a dark horse.

If the scores are close they should choose Vincent, easily. His scoring potential is much higher and he has shown improvements in his overall skating. He is part of the future of US men's skating and they should embrace that. He many not be consistent but he goes for it. Jason on the other hand has completely stagnated. He has been on the scene for how long now and has yet to show a quad in his program (and still shows not a hint of doing it) when all the top men are attempting at least three. His inconsistent 3A makes it worse. Funny how we've seen at these nationals Ashley getting dumped for being a stagnating veteran in favor of new potential while Jason continues to be a golden boy and she's accomplished far more internationally then he has :palmf:

It’s interesting that according to some people, Vincent, even though he hasn’t fixed his UR problems, that that’s okay because he’s developing artistically. But those same people are allergic to giving Jason the same benefit of the doubt. Why do people refuse to see how much Jason has developed in all areas besides jumps or that he’s “stagnating” because that’s just simply untrue

Jason is not part of the future. He is the past. 1980s past.

Jason has superior skating skills, interpretation skills and spins to die for.:luv17:

Very much the present:agree: of our sport. Yes, those are parts of the sport, sport. sport.

Vincent and others should be so lucky to be part of the 80s:yes:

I don't know. Jason is the best overall skater in the country, save the quad. He has a top PCS guarantee and level 4s in allspins and step sequences.

100% agree with you I think he has the stuff to someday progress his SS as good as Chan, I don't even think he's reached the top of how much PCS he can get is basically what I'm saying

it's not fair to say that Vincent is the future of US figure skating when, first of all he's not much younger than Chen who can rotate all of his quads. I mean, why bank on him having an amazing skate when he's never shown any sign of that competing as a senior? If we want to show the world our future why stop with first year seniors? Let's just send the three best novice skaters we've got why not!

Wow, it's a cycle of unappreciation

2017 Nationals: hey Vincent, even though you got the silver medal at Nationals, we will send bronze medal Jason to World's instead, because ... stuff

Vincent: ok but I hope, in the future, you don't hold against me not going to Worlds, it wasn't my fault I didn't go

....
....
....

2018: Hey Vincent, even if you get the silver medal again, you shouldn't go to the Olympics. Remember? you didn't go to the last Worlds!

Um, apparently Jimmy Ma is going to go viral?! Don’t know if this is true or not.
See, it’s a great thing to step away from the warhorses and princess melodies and piano concertos of figure skating and try something new!

Sometimes I wonder if Jason also spent as much time practicing the quads as the quadsters would he have the time and energy to focus on developing those non-jump areas as much as he has. And vice versa.

Just to correct you here, they do have a selection process that is not dependent on Nationals alone. The committee already has that system.

but why are you and other people selective in their praise towards skaters? Like you praise quadsters for being quadsters and for pushing the sport even though they don't hold a candle in regards to program components to skaters like jason who worked on their PCS (which getting a high level requires just as much work as training multiple quads) but don't have monstrous stamina or good jumping power.

Yes, with his jump issues, why is he known as a technical powerhouse? The emperor has no clothes.

I certainly hope so! I loved it!

I like many styles of music but it’s very frustrating to hear the same music over and over during programs. And I’m also tired of stereotypes about rap, hip hop, trap etc.

I’m a fan
