2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Holy cow, the draws this year are very aaaaa. I am worried about Jason though, he doesn't seem to do well later in the groupings (although it may be that the confounding factor of him doing well in the short and so being later is the true cause).

Actually, he usually does pretty well skating last. Last Nationals was an exception because he was injured.

It’s not inherently bad. In 2014 Ricky Dornbush skated second, and he got like 90 and was in second going into the FS.

I remember that year! Ricky had an amazing SP that year, and it put some pressure on everyone who skated after him.

I hope Max does the same thing.

well lets spin it into "Max gets to set the tone for the events!"

Plus ... Max skated first in the Nats SP in 2013, which of course is the year that he won the whole championship. :yay:

FWIW re Tomoki (in response to the Dec 2 posts above, which I copied from the Team KoRo fan thread):

Tomoki was one of the skaters posing with Christy Krall in a recent photo from Larkyn Austman:

The photo shows Tomoki, Larkyn, Alex Wellman, and Angela Wang posing with Christy at the World Arena Ice Hall.

(I don't know whether or not Tomoki has trained with Christy at the same time that he was a 7k skater??)
...

Quoting my own post in order to note that AFAIK, Christy was not with Tomoki (Practice Group D) at practice today. (Did anyone else see her with Tomoki?)

From my distant vantage point, I could see only that a male coach was with Tomoki. Could not see the coach's face [ETA: with sufficient clarity to recognize him].

Christy is in San Jose. Along with Papa Torgashev, she was coaching Andrew (Group B) at practice.

(And Christy and Ryan Bradley both were with Angela Wang at practice.)

FWIW, I can confirm that Tomoki wasn’t at the 7K sendoff.

Doesn’t Christy also coach with Damon Allen - weren’t they Josh’s team?

El, you know I can't give up on our boy. One bad practice... nothing to worry about.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? NO!

When did that happen? :laugh2:
The Japanese will not be happy to learn that you're giving the Germans credit! :laugh2:

Seriously, though, Andrew will be fine. It's a learning experience, just like it is for Hanna Harrell.

I can't be sure because I was too far away ... but I think(??) the male coach with Tomoki looked taller than Damon (whom I have seen in person on other occasions).
[It is true that Christy and Damon coached Josh together.]

I can't rule out Ryan, but as my eyes strained to identify Tomoki's coach, they did not perceive a resemblance to Ryan. But I could be totally wrong??

Hope someone can shed light.

Anyway, good luck to Tomoki :yay: and all the other men.

[Apologies for this shallow comment: Is it me, or is Tomoki's new hairstyle similar to Nathan's new one?]

I sometimes forget that not everybody has the same cultural references as an old American ex-frat-boy geezer.

The iconic "Was it over..." line is from the movie Animal House. If you YouTube it, the scene will pop up. Caution: Rough Language.

I'm torn. Adam, Max and Jason's skating styles and programs are my favorites of the current US men, but I feel like I should root for Nathan to be on the team because he's probably the US's best bet for an Olympic medal.

Nathan's experimental style and scientific method have done a lot to win me over this season. Plus I enjoy his programs a lot more now that he's working on his artistry more. Jason's skating won me over in a big way when he came onto the scene though so I know that feel.

I've been watching old skates and have been reminded of just how unfortunate Jason's costume was at the 2015 Nationals LP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJAW2ICmyvA

Ah yes, the “beetle exuvia” yellow pants  Rohene insisted on the yellow pants, as they were more authentic (he actually wanted them to look like leather from the Middle Ages). By Worlds, Kori had changed them to black. Didn’t hurt Jason’s results any:)

Today I had a much better view, and Christy and Damon both were at practice with Tomoki.

So I now assume that Damon was the male coach with Tomoki yesterday.

My view yesterday of the coach was from way across the rink and thru extremely-scratched-up hockey glass. Sorry that I got the misimpression that the coach was not Damon.

Apologies to all for causing confusion.
