2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

After watching the Men's, I enjoyed Ross' the most. It was exuberant, free, and packed full of creative transitions and steps. There were flashes of Patrick Chan. Nathan was good but still a bit tentative and costume was distracting.

I sincerely hope that podium goes to Korea as Adam's programs aren't that great, and with missed jumps, really look empty.

I'd take podium. I think it is really unfair to replace Vincent over body if work and not Miner. They were within less than a point. Zhou medaled last year medaled at a Senior B won Jr Worlds and has higher international scores than Miner.

I would go with the podium cuz I personally think body of work should be spectacular but Arguing body of work to take Adam but replacing Zhou is not fair. Zhou beat Adam at senior B.

Just a bit of a side note: I got chat with Jeremy Abbott and he seemed relaxed and happy. He truly is enjoying doing shows in Japan, China and elsewhere and pursuing other skating endeavors.

If Jason decides to move on from competition, I think there will be plenty of opportunities abroad. He is really popular in Japan.

Not to mention -- he'll still be doing Stars on Ice THIS year. :)

Random thoughts:

I dislike the talk about "Vincent can always have his Olympic moment in 4 years." That argument was leveled against Polina Edmunds in Sochi. If that advice had been followed, then Polina would never (in all probability) ever have had her Olympic experience.

During the competition, I wondered if the tech panel was being overly harsh on Vincent - trying to keep him within reach of Adam and Jason. If they were, they have lived to regret it. If Ross had finished 3rd, they would have dumped him in favor of Adam - pretty much without a lot of controversy. The committee might still make that decision, but it will be much more controversial.

I can't see them leaving Vincent off the team. Even with the URs, he at least has the capability of a monster skate. And I personally think his 4Z3T(Rip) is the best jumping pass I have ever seen in my life.

Even though I've been off the Jason bandwagon for a while, I was unexpectedly saddened to see his performance. I can't say I was entirely surprised, but I felt badly for him. If he has any plans to continue skating, I hope he goes with a new coaching team. Otherwise, I really don't see the point.

I thought about Mrs P when Ross skated - I know she was over the moon. Good for him, and good for her for sticking by him.

Yep that was what I thought with my post too.. :)

personally i would pick nathan , ross and vincent,

they stated why they chose what they did.

sure vincent 5 quad's ur. so was karen, a bit difference in being karen was national champ , karen placed 4th at worlds.

is it.
they stated the technical content being upgrade at international competitons

i am sorry but the tech content of vincent matched nathan's . his tes scores wound up lower due to ur's

vincent should go. ross should what stay home--he landed a quad salchow cleanly. i think he tried it when it went to worlds and finished what 7th, 8th , 9th not sure.
they should be u.s. year stating look at our men than can keep up with international in tech /pcs-- (inflated pc's) they are tied to the tech content. not artistry. (
as shown they have to skate clean under this system to win or even medal when the men, ladies with the tech content can mess up and still win/medal.

the ladies should have at least 1 triple/triple if not two
the men a minimum of 3 quads- nathan & vincent has 4-5 quads,
the quad has to be done in the short and long..

as good as adam is -he didn't skate with his attitude or intensity- like he should have. he would have medaled -top 3 finish. he gave up during his program
nothing to be ashamed about no, but he knew should have skated better to secure the spot.

jason- as good artistry- he is great at that. i don't know what happened for him to skate like that. that is the worse i seen him skate in the past two years and bad timing on his part.

should they go-- i don't know

but i would personally keep the medalist of nathan, ross, vincent to the olympic and world team unless one wins, medals and don't go
put adam, jason, grant as 4cc

sorry.
bradie didn't go to senior worlds either -junior worlds finished 8th, vincent 1st- not bad in scores usually around 3-4 points less than adam or ross with mistakes.

I don't blame you.

D**pThr**t was extremely famous in the 1980s and 1990s to mean 'who is your secret source' because no knew who he was. But after it was revealed to be Mark Felt in 2005, the term and the mystery that is associated with it dwindled.

I don't think it has held much relevance for a long time. Watergate, I get. It's ubiquitous. But I think DT is something that was left in the archive long time ago.

I think discounting my gutter mind of late, I think most young people these days would pretty much have the same reaction as I did to that term. Reminds me of the time when I told someone how I confused BBC for British Broadcasting corporation, when in fact the context was British Born Chinese. Coincidentally the person I was talking to implied BBC meant something else. As evidenced from this anecdote, I really do need to find company with people with cleaner minds. :palmf:

Ross is an 8 year senior Nationals veteran who has been given many opportunities in the past, but has failed to capitalize on them internationally and really prove that he is a reliable competitor. Like every skater, he knows the rules that the Olympic selection committee must follow when organizing the best possible team to send to South Korea. One strong competition should not erase his many years of inconsistency and low international scores and placements relative to Adam Rippon.

My choices would be:

4CC:
Miner
Zhou
Hochstein
(Zhou may decline, which would call up Brown)

Olympics:
Chen
Zhou
Rippon

Worlds:
Chen
Miner
Zhou
(I expect Rippon to retire after the Olympics)

for the record i was expecting the announcement to be up. looking forward to it though.
congrats again to all the men for the hard work.

there will be joy and heartbreak.
i am also wondering who they will send to junior worlds.
andrew, aleksei, tomoki- camden

they u.s. has interesting choices. in choosing u.s. olympic team.

i hope they send medalist because they can point out similiarites between the ladies and men- while if this for the men-why not ladies, if this for the ladies why not men.

So when are the results coming out?

Personally I think Nathan and Adam should make the team, it's a no-brainer. It's the third spot that's unclear...

On the deep throat thing.. I made this exact reference when I was in grade 10 and no one knew what I was talking about other than the.. film. I had no idea about the film. They had no idea about the political connection. Oy Vey.

BTW, I'm sick as a dog but here is my thought:

I'd send Nathan, Ross and Adam to the Olympics.
I'd send Nathan, Ross and Vincent to Worlds.

But I also can see the argument for not sending Ross. Vincent is just so hit and miss with his results. If Nathan wins worlds you only need the other two to be the top ten, correct? To keep three spots.

I just can't see leaving Adam off the team for the Olympics with his results and international reputation and therefor PCs marks.

So here's an interesting scenario. What if Nathan medals at the Olympics -- and he has a wonderful opportunity to win -- would it be possible that he ends up not going to Worlds? After such a long season, it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that he won't want to do Worlds. Then you might want to put Jason as 1st alternate?

And actually Jason is such a team player -- I think he would actually follow through. He tends to peak later in the season as we've seen in the past. And he gets higher PCS internationally than anybody.

If you take Nathan out-- who are the three best men to go? Adam, Vincent and Jason make sense. Give Ross the Olympics, but put him as second alternate for Worlds.

Ugh this is actually more complicated when I think about it. There's actually a trillion scenarios you can think about.

If they axe Ross Miner (which I predict will happen, or already has happened as the case may be), it will open a fresh wound in Miner, might re-open a wound in poor Mark Mitchell, and should re-open the wound in Mirai Nagasu b/c her body of work absolutely should've trumped Polina Edmunds, but the argument was that Edmunds placed 2nd. [And since I have the opportunity to do so and since so many people seem to have forgotten, I'd like to point out that Mirai was great at Rostelecom that year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH2ToQby6zI&t=291s ]

Not impressed by the quality of Nathans quads. They all looked sloppy.

What's up with the giant zipper on the back of his costume?

Flow out is weak but I think it is the "standard" for men's quads for now. Their rotational speed is not "proportional" to the speed of entry (i.e. too fast), and they often land on flat feet instead of outside edge. There are exceptions like Boyang Jin's solo 4Lz with long entry which gives proper speed for all 4 rotations, but as you can imagine they are exceptionally difficult to pull off and require too long a setup. In the past when skaters executed 1 or 2 quads they were almost always 4T, and they used to be executed with proper setup and speed. Now they are doing 4+ quads and there just is not enough time or energy for such executions, it seems.

I also notice this from many ladies who "consistently" land tripple jumps. They do land their jumps but not with much flow but instead with what appear to be painful knee impacts. I am not a fan.

I went back to watch both Adam's and Ross' LP just to be sure, and I stick to my initial impression.

Adam's just full of crossovers, where did those PCS come from?

Ross' full of great surprising transitions that synched so well with the music, I love the ones into the spin and into the 2A, so exuberant!

He can polish it a bit more, but it is certainly Olympic worthy.

It'll be so unfair if podium doesn't go. It's blatant favoritism :slink:
