2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

Who I think will be on the team:
Chen (definitely)
Zhou (the future, medal chances if he gets it together and everyone else doesn't)
Brown (BOW)
1st alternate: Rippon
2nd alternate: Miner
3rd alternate: Hochstein

Omg I'm one of the BIGGEST, uberestest Jason stans here but if he's picked to go to the Olympics I will be sooooooo disappointed in USFS. I hate it when people claim that his good results are because of favouritism because I honestly don't believe they are, but if they choose him over one of the guys on the podium, he can get a quad Axel and skate flawless 250-point long programmes from here to eternity and his scores will always be "due to reputation". It would be the biggest disservice to him.

If they axe Ross Miner (which I predict will happen, or already has happened as the case may be), it will open a fresh wound in Miner, might re-open a wound in poor Mark Mitchell, and should re-open the wound in Mirai Nagasu b/c her body of work absolutely should've trumped Polina Edmunds, but the argument was that Edmunds placed 2nd. [And since I have the opportunity to do so and since so many people seem to have forgotten, I'd like to point out that Mirai was great at Rostelecom that year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH2ToQby6zI&t=291s ]

Yes! That was the year, USFS sent a very inconsistent 10 year senior competitor named Paul Wylie to the Olympics. It was devastating to watch/hear Mark Mitchell hope for his "turn" that never came, but we all know what happened at that Olympics. It's a different skating world right now, but does give one pause.

I agree with this. He doesn't need the extra pressure a la Miki Ando in 2006. It's uncanny how similar their seasons were -- 2nd/4th in GP event; competed in GPF; 6th at Nationals. I know he said he thought he had a shot at being chosen, but that's honestly talk to me.

Give him 4CC -- one last chance to redeem himself this season and the let him reset -- and work on those jumps.

But what all-American theme can you milk from Adam’s history? “Coronations” and braggadoccio don’t play well, especially for the Olympics, unless—and this is a big IF—there’s a win. What is Adam’s standout story-line?

Out gay athlete, first Olympics at 28...?

He was definitely too cocky before the competition but at least he has shown some humility afterward, unlike his BFF.

Vincent Zhou's performance was more complex emotionally and choreographically I thought.

Excuse me but where? I just can't see anything and it's really not that I don't want to. He barely takes his eyes off the ice, and his expression is only ever indicative of pain, but not a tragic romantic pain but more like he's constipated.

Choreography? When? And his transitions are so misplaced. He does a spread eagle between the first two jumps when nothing is happening musically, but doesn't do one on IIII WIL LOOOOOVE YOUUUU :disapp: I mean it's not even entirely his fault ofc. And he did 8 jumps and only the last one matched the music :noshake:

Christine Brennen Just posted that the team is Nathan, Vincent and Adam and that she has confirmed it with 3 sources. I guess the debate is over. Shame for Ross.

Oh, bugger off you guys. This is how many athletes talk. It's just a way of psyching yourself up and not selling yourself short before big competitions. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but there's no need to be judgmental. And Adam actually has been the #2 US guy all season. Consistently. The international judges have rightfully given him the components to back that up. He popped two jumps last night. It'll change nothing. He'll be on that team.

Maybe in MMA and boxing where the athletes need to talk big to sell tickets and raise the buzz. Skating is neither Boxing nor MMA.

Psyching oneself is one thing, but if one starts taking shots at their competitors then they might as well prepare themselves for the shots that will come right back at them, as is the case with Bouchard and Sharapova in tennis. Both talked big in a condescending manner. Both are very much struggling to find the range they once possessed, without the same support they used to have.

I don't care for Adam's or Ashley's quotes but well...they are entitled to freedom of expression.

However, I hope that Olympic committee will watch all 3 LP - Ross, Vincent and Adam's back-to-back before they decide.

Adam's LP is simply a lot of bird-like hand movements with crossovers for 80% of skate. Without great jumps, what's there...stsq and spins weren't great either.

In terms of being full of great transitions, footwork and details, excellently executed to sassy music, Ross brought it.:luv17:

Seriously, watch them back-to-back to judge the quality of the programs.

BBM. Regarding freedom of expression. There are times when it’s a grand idea to hold your tongue....

It’s called sportsmanship, respect for others, humility. These are strong Olympian values. During nationals atletes are being selected to represent the US. Remember how Jeremy Abbott entitled himself to “free expression” in Sochi? How poorly that played in Olympic media, and then he almost lost Team USA any chance at a medal?

Well, honestly -- they're going with straight national results elsewhere -- so they have room again to use it with the men.

I totally can see the World team being the same as the Olympics one and Jason being 1st alternate. Ugh, I want Ross to get something though!!

Hold on, I am gonna watch Vincent again and I'll get back to you. [emoji23]

How exactly does one differentiate between frustration, angst and looking constipated? Is it in the eyes? Is it the hand gestures? Having never really thought about it now I am puzzled. :puzzled:
