2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

There will be also unofficial prediction game, so you already can start to think about skaters' placements! 🤔

Okay so I compared the lists. There are 18 skaters entering the Jr Nats.
Missing:
From JGP - Sofia Samodurova, Alisa Fedichkina
From Russian Cup - #2 Kurakova; #7 Pankova
Added:
Scherbakova
#11 Safonova
#12 Tsibinova
#13 Cherpakova
Questions
(1) Why are the four eligible ladies, Samodurova, Fedichkina, Kurakova and Pankova missing?
(2) Why is #10 Gorina, who was supposed to be the first substitute, not on the participation list?
(3) Dear Ms Olympic substitute, are you not promoted to senior earlier this season?

So this Eteri's interview from Vogue. I skipped the introduction for common public.
Everyone on the rink, the stars and beginners are working equally. Girls in the black leggings and tops and the pair of boys again and again speed up and jump, and if they fall children stand up and go for another jump. Sometimes they blow their noses near the coaching table with toy with napkins and laptop and go on training. In the morning workout they work on elements and show their programs on the training in the evening. Minute is enough for Zhenya to charm and abash and dance everyone on the rink. Pink-cheeked Alina is glowing with the winner smile. "I am training with help of irony and even if I say something offensive I do it through joke." Eteri said. "For vulnerable or intimidated or pampered children would be very hard to train with me but those who came first time but doesn't close off and jokes back these is my children."
Tutberidze is proud of ability of Medvedeva to speak up to the highest audience like in Lausanne almost more than she proud of gold medals. She insists that the development of the athlete personality is such important as polishing up their technical skills. Music, books, movies, Balanchine and Ekman one-act ballets, Stanislavsky Theatre, simple talks with parents and coaches, everything imprint on children. "Media call them "robots". But they are not. They are just girls who weight less than 45 kilos." Critics expose her for draining everything from children bodies. She retorted, "Yes, nowadays many want to raise age of adult competions to18 years but here regression will started. When girls grew up, their bodies begin to prepare for giving birth, start to slow and be more cautious." Zhenya Medvedeva was twelve when Eteri showed her at the adult Russian championship. "I was told that she was too small but I insisted. I wanted show such delicate her to the world. Tatiana Tarasova was standing and applauded to her."
“This killing or phenomenal combination of the american technical efficiency and russian ruthlessness. Eteri has moved beyond limits of female figure skating" said Russian sport journalist Eugene Zuenko. She is only one who managed to produce skaters by such conveyer way. Tutberidse has ideal working system which has separate specialists for jumps, skating, choreography. She controls them like top manager and achieves the top result. She has harsh sorting of girls. But those who were rejected by Tutberidse and went to another coach are not even close now to results they showed with Eteri.
She is born in Moscow and was fifth child in the family of mother engineer and father foundry worker. Eteri started sport in 1978 when she was four. At the Young Pioneers stadium she was brought along with her older brother who occupied there with football. Passing by the open gate of the ice rink, she stopped and told her mother it seems that beautiful snowflakes circled on the ice. "I told my mother to bring me there." "They will not take you." "They will." When I was given someone else's skates and waiting for the coach viewing, I began to run outside the rink. I thought if I learn here on the ground, then will be no problems at the rink. I went out on the ice and immediately fell down. The coach went to the opposite side and called us to her. I could not get up and very quickly ran up to her on all fours and stood up with the help of her leg. I felt like a winner.
Eteri started in ladies then moved to dancing on ice. She took prizes at the USSR cups. When she finished her career she left for the US as many of her colleagues to perform in ice shows. There she began to coach. "Do you know that there is no group training in USA only private and not free? Parents make so that it is a child who pays you by check or cash. That is how the child understands that time is money and there no talk, lacing skates and blowing the nose every five minutes. Training session with coach takes half of hour and then they train alone. This is also good, it is responsibility and self-consciousness. Coach is a god there!"
Group training in Russian style also has strong advantage. Small sportsmen are looking on older ones and they see that everything is possible and grow up with the leaders.
"School founded by Tutberidze is the best answer to demands of the time. Modern figure skating requires less artistry and far more acrobatics. The jump on third minute is more expensive than on the first minute. The beautiful spin is cheaper then difficult jump. Therefore Tutberidze students are jumping a lot. It seems there is very precise calculations of scores, the perfect calculator in her head which determins how much her athlete should get every second. Tutberidze like Steve Jobs who didn’t invent the computer or smartphone but who managed to make the best gadget between competitors", said Zuenko.
Steve Jobs presented his iPhone in jeans and sneakers and Eteri doesn’t like pretentious slogans either. "Set a little goal and reach it then go to the another and so on".
"How to set athlete for winning?"
"The best way is to remind skater your remarks before the start of skating." To the question what to expect on the Olympics she answered shortly, "The fight". In the first place there would be struggling of Medvedeva with her own leg and if health doesn’t let down then for Medvedeva and Zagitova there are no equal rivals. The main competitors are considered to be Satoko Miyahara and Wakaba Higuchi but they lost to them in every competition like Kaetlyn Osmond from Canada.
Eteri said, "I don’t know what the mind of the winner is and how to make it. This is all theory. The athletes just have to have the right mind. They just should set the goal and work to achieve it. Regardless if hurts something or they are tired or afraid. Let it be the small goal like to make a jump or to skate the whole program or to work the training hour so that nobody sees that your leg is in a little pain. This is not possible to bear without motivation. And this motivation is the only one here – not to see self anywhere except the ice. For example I can’t imagine myself working in the office or shop and athletes should be like this.
Zagitova had been dropout from the team once like Scherbakova. "Alina had childish attitude to work - today I do it, and tomorrow I'm not. I expelled her. She was with another coach for a few months, nobody forced her there. Then parents saw the regress and were planning to go back home to Izhevsk and this is when Alina had realized that she couldn’t live without ice. And when Yulia Lipnitskaya came to me five years before Sochi her mother said, "You know we get to the next Olympics by age." I was very amused and thought to myself that wow, still had to learn the jumps but Olympics were in plans already. May be for Yulia it was right. But I tell you the secret when Yulia got her medal the first question she asked, "Mom is this that medal you wanted? Is it Olympic medal?" Mother said yes and I saw that something turned off in Yulia's eyes.”
Tutberidze allows the parents to be on the trainings ("so child doesn’t feel alone") but generally she is strict towards them. "If child is not allowed to eat sweets or pastry these things must not be in the house. If child should not have the dinner so parents have to wait to eat after she goes to bed."
Fifteen years old Eteri daughter Diane is on the rink since she was two months old. She learned how to walk here and played with snowballs in the corner of the rink so there was no other life choice for her. But Diane changed ladies skating to the ice dancing last year. "She didn’t want to do it because her training is in the other place and we don’t see each other at all. But I saw that she lacks coordination in her falls. It can cause the serious trauma and I will not forgive myself as her teacher and mother".
We are sitting in small coaching room. There is a table with photos of Medvedeva and Diana, couch, rack and paintings by her friend. There are no windows. The conditioner is loud. "I got my room last year” - Eteri glanced at the modest surroundings. “Before this I was sitting in the entrance hall. Stars - it's not about us. Girls champions share the locker room with everyone else. “
She doesn’t have time to think about comfort. "Sometimes I take not the whole day but the half of the day off, and then I have a lazy morning with coffee, book or movie and go to the work." From movies and books Tutberidze appreciates dramas the most. Sentimental like a Cruel Romance or inspiring the act of bravery like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Julian Schnabel ("I watched it four times"). It is about the paralyzed after stroke writer who managed to write bestseller by controlling only his left eye. The girl who ran to her coach on all fours appreciates the triumph of will beyond everything else.

"if child is not allowed to eat sweets or pastry, these things must not be in the house..If child should not have the dinner so parents have to wait to eat after child goes to bed". Does this mean that the child don't have dinner? Can someone answer this? Is this not a form of abuse and win at all cost. Those girls are probably starving. Make no wonder Yulia had an eating disorder. Oh my..... I wonder, in the end, is this all worth it...What is most disturbing, is that fans will agree with this and say it's all worth it because that the way it's done in this neck of the woods. Oh my....

Probably best not to jump to any conclusions here. There are several healthy people who eat a large breakfast and small lunch and very small dinner...like really small. I can’t know for certain but it’s just as likley that the family isn’t eating like a professional athlete and that a large dinner may interfere with the more healthy diet the athletes need and got earlier in the day.

Giving her the benefit of the doubt maybe it means if the child is not allowed to have certain foods because she is watching her weight, like pizza or other unhealthy options, the family should not have it in front of the child. At least that’s what I hope she means.

400 pages! :cool2:

I think Alena's perfomance is also worthy of mentioning here
https://youtu.be/7pabtrpucdM

I knew something was off when I first watch this new version of her SP. I can't say I like the new changes.

The combination spin was no longer in synchrony with the music. Number of revolutions are the same (27) but allocation to different spin positions are adjusted so overall it took less time to complete. The choreography of step sequence wasn't adjusted according to the change in timing of music. It was the same until the end where a few additional steps are added. The exit of 3F3T was again too near to the boards IMO. She also did a 3Lz3T for exhibition purpose which I enjoyed.

I don't know if I were just biased, but as a fan who enjoyed the musicality in her SP very much, I find the change in choreography very odd. I understand that they are working to raised the StSq3 to an StSq4, but the music and the choreography felt "off". I don't know how it looks to a casual viewer, it might look just fine and that I have watched her SP too many times that I am too used to her old choreography.

Why do you guys think about the changes? Like it? Not like it? Looks all the same to you?

What do you guys think? Would the change hurt her PCS?

It's just her SP adapted for the exibition program. Or you think skaters do all their elements correctly at Gala? Yes, her EX was off with the music, all her choreo was off, but why did you decide this is her new version? [emoji848] This is nonsense.

Probably they changed her SP just for EX purposes.
Alena: Daniil, I still missing my ex program!
Daniil: oops, ok, just skate as you like, I'll turn on your SP music.

Pretty sure this layout is just for showing off in the exhibition since I don't think you're allowed to do two triple-triples in the short program.

Born to make history!!!

Also: I see you there, puremagic... emojis can't make up for what's not in your house...

2018 Russian Junior Nationals SP thread

This should be Trusova, Kostornaia and Tarakanova (or even better Gubanova)

But i feel the Konstantinova inflation will come and they will let her get a bronze or even a silver, despite what happened last year (they wanted to give her a shot and she bombed both programs at Junior Worlds)

About the interview:
Wow.Eteri's words sound rough, but contextualizing is understood: Sambo 70 is a STATE Olympic reserve. Kids are not paying for their classes, this factor increases the number of applicants. They had a GRUPAL training system. Unlike USA, Canada, Japan and any other country where skating classes are mostly paid (see Orser, Canada) and oriented to the skater individually. Sambo 70 and the team led by Eteri has a large number of highly competitive students, under this logic, obviously those who endure the pressure and discipline, not only on the ice, but in their general living habits: getting up early, having a Specific diet, train every day without tantrums, will have more chances of reaching the top. There is a long list of potential stars to take the first place. Everything is meritocracy.

Obviously if you go to a private academy, where you are PAYING for a service, you are no longer just a student, but a client. And your coach / provider, will offer your services cordially, because you are paying, there is a schedule to attend, time is money, and other customers wait.

The context is totally different. On the weight of the girls, it is obvious that Eteri prefers the girls who already have a small body type that is not prone to weight (Evgenia, Tarakanova), or small and athletic (Zagitova, Trusova) why? because it is obviously more functional to achieve the results. Now, this is what she prefers, but within the group we see girls like Daria or Kostornaya, who may gain some weight, in the case of Kostornaya we don't know, since she is incredibly short( by genetics. She will be able to gain something of hips, maybe bust, but this does not necessarily have to affect her).

feeding: in the backstage you always see Alina and Evgenia eating some fruit before entering the Warm up.
I think you, guys are doing a drama, ALL SPORTS HAVE A TYPE OF DIET, to this you have to add your specific type of body. This is neither anorexia nor disease: it is discipline. I guess the girls have a nutritionist who will give them the diet they need. Evgenia has always had a small body, in fact she has gained a lot of muscle in her legs and that surprises me (I have that kind of body, I can eat like a pig, and not gain a lot of weight), so I think maybe she has been increasing the proteins to gain muscle and thus improve the power in the jumps.
I see a lot more prone to anorexia in girls whose bodies are thicker, but Zagitova and Medvedeva are born blessed, and they don't need to exaggerate in their diets (let's hope that)

Now, speaking much more in general, this happens in the Ballet and in Gymnastics. There is a documentary on RT Channel called " Dance of the Little Swans", when I saw it I was surprised at the harshness of the selection at the Vaganova Academy. Parents from all over Russia and neighboring countries took their girls with the hope of being selected, and then they had to go through rigorous tests: body type, posture, grace. I felt sad for the children, and I hated especially Tsiscaridze who behaved like a tyrant. But I also saw discipline, and students who worked hard to deliver perfection. In the case of male students the selection was more flexible since there are very few a pplicants.
And well, one as a person can think that Tsiskaridze director of Vaganova, Irina Viner of Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Eteri, are some heartless! but they carry on their shoulders the great responsibility of forming winners and keeping the list of them (yes, although it sounds cruel, a country must have "spare parts"). Interestingly, these three people have taken their disciplines to the top.For us they are horrible, but if you look at their students, they do nothing but praise them and thank them in each interview. This is beyond our comprehension, because we are not athletes (at least I don't) :(

Here I leave the documentary, in case someone wants to see it

In the end, I think this goes back to a culture topic. People in Russia are much more disciplined, much more serious and "collective".
Like Japan, despite having a different model to the Russian one, they also have a high competitiveness, many aspirants and a "structure of formality".

In the rest of the world we are much more liberal and somewhat individualistic.Personally, I don't like the rules or have someone shouting at me what I should do. That is why I greatly admire athletes in general, ballet dancers, who are capable of listening, being constant and disciplined. The path of an athlete is so difficult :drama:

Not sure if mentioned yet, but rumor is Samodurova isn't participating in Junior Nationals because of an arm injury, according to this.
