Difference though between what is not our cup of tea and what is offensive.

For example nearly all music to POTO is not my cup of tea but does not offend me.

I'll prefer 'jumping bean' with quads to an 'artist' without quads and that kind of choreo any day. Am I offended or it's just not my cup of tea?

I'd like to know what other people think about skaters using religious music? I know Ave Maria is popular. I also heard the Magnificat and Amazing Grace this year. It seems to me that these choices are just as bad, just in the opposite direction. Plus, taking a spill in the middle really looks bad.
Nothing wrong skating to what uplifts you.

The only real problem I have is when I see girls under 16 using sexualized concepts. As if they aren't already a big enough target for predators without all the innuendos and costumes :disapp: I seriously judge the adults around them for allowing it, especially for kids under 13 :dev2:

The rest are more of an personal annoyance than an actual problem.

Reading your two other posts I gather that you have strong feelings about how men should look and behave when they skate. Keep in mind that not everyone shares your opinions. Men can be delicate and refined. Women can be powerful and strong. It seems a shame to push people into a box that says "This is how boys should skate" or "This is how girls should skate". Maybe we should just let people find their own way to express their artistic selves.

Well, Sasha Cohen wasn't a teenager at the time but her exhibition to Hey Big Spender with her floor show was a little much. But not really offensive, just a little :hopelessness:

The only thing I find inappropriate is the announcer opening up a beer can in the middle of the performance! How rude!

Artemieva was over 20 at that time, so the program insinuating that a girl wearing seemingly her boyfriend's shirt in the morning is not a big deal, but what I'm saying is the little girl's ending gestures is somewhat connected with the white shirt. Since you asked about any innuendo, I said the example.

Nah, nothing wrong with Ma's SP. It was fun. Drinking lyrics? Ma's 22. He's of legal age to drink.

If you have an issue with drinking lyrics, did you also take issue with Joshua's "Give Me Love" SP? (That was more egregious to me.)

Nothing at all wrong with a woman skating to Gladiator. (I have). The issue with Gabby's music was the cover version of it. If you're going to skate to Gladiator, the Hans Zimmer originals are the only way to go.

Maybe you are right.
Who knows, may be one day a male skater will become an Olympic champion skating to 'Black swan' and 'Carmen'. It will be refreshing I suppose 😁

I agree with you.
But what makes 16 the magic age for you? Why not 15? Or 17?

I always had heartburn when the USFS used, "Save a horse, ride a cowboy" as background music. Although I don't know if anyone actually ever skated to it.

I really have no answers, but I like listening to the conversations here.

Just for the record, Mike Weiss skated to "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" in SOI & in other professional shows. I really liked that program by Mike.

There is nothing wrong with ladies skating strong and powerful or men skating refined and delicate. You got me wrong. Actually I like elegant skaters both male and female

As a fan of a male skater who has competed to both in recent times (actually Carmen would have been his Olympic FS had that worked in 2014), I'm not sure I comprehend exactly what you're talking about. Why not talk openly and honestly rather than in wishy-washy terms?

By the way, Evgeni Plushenko nearly became an Olympic Champion skating to Carmen.

As to the sexual standards there is a conflict of cultures in my opinion. Figure skating is an international sport with many cultures participating. And every culture has their own standards and nuances. Then how do we do on the international level? How do we define tolerance? By least restrictive, i.e. if something is OK in any participating culture then it must be accepted everywhere? Or the other way - the most restrictive? If something is offensive anywhere then it's not allowed everywhere else? Or the third option, which appears to be the one currently in place - enforcing the US standards all over.

For example - Zagitova's gala costume appears to be shocking to the American viewers, given the fact she is 15. I live in the US, so I am definitely infected by the US culture, so the costume is a bit odd to me too. However, I can see myself living back in Poland and then I would not be even capable of seeing any controversy. I would ask - what are the Americans talking about? And it appears there is no problem with it in Russia either.

There is a *humongous* difference between an adult skating to music that they selected and they want to skate to (go for it, and actually, I *like* Delilah. If we eliminate songs about murder, there go half the operas in the world....)

And

Music that *minors* skate to. In the US of A we restrict minors from all sorts of things, including pornography, driving, and alcohol. A parent may restrict (I'm not saying whether it's successful, I'm saying they may) what a minor reads and what a minor listens to. They are enormously restricted in daily life.

A 13 year old skating to "I don't pop my cork for every guy I see, hey big spender, spend a little time with me" from a musical about prostitutes is completely inappropriate. There is NO way to justify, rationalize, or make up a story to make that right. It's not her fault, of course, the adults in her life have done her wrong. And maybe they did not understand the English.

I have seen Starr skate to "Fever" in person. I was extremely uncomfortable. She is a very young looking 16, and skating to "you give me fever, fever in the morning, fever all through the night, what a lovely way to burn" is inappropriate.

For minors, it's got bubkes to do with censorship, and that is the reddest of red herrings.....

But still there is no male skater who become oly champion skating to that music, am I right? The door is open )
