Our champion ice team won by tenths of a point and didn't win either segment.
by your logic, the Shibs should do the SD and C/B should do the FD

Maybe they should. For the FD, a case could be made for either H/D or C/B over the Shibs, given their Nationals results, while the Shibs are clearly ahead in the SD.

It's a major bummer to only allow one ice dance team to compete in the team event when it is BY FAR the US's best discipline in terms of depth and competitive results. Same if Russia decided to only allow one lady to compete in the team event.

We don't have an ice dance team who beat every other American team this season. We do have an American woman who beat every other American this season, and I don't even think Bradie lost a segment to another American.
 
I keep thinking of how the USFSA is concerned about the decline in the sport's popularity--icing out the U.S. champions in ice dance from the team event is exactly the sort of thing that confuses and alienates non-fans. I think the USFSA wants Mirai in the team so that there's a feel-good story there--she'll have a strong chance of going home with a team medal then. But it seems more unfair to have the Shibs skate both sections when they've been behind both C/B and H/D in the free dance at both Nationals and the Grand Prix and, of course, lost the title to H/D.

Having Bradie skate both sections of Ladies just makes sense and is fair--she's been on fire this season.

Absolutely. Personally, I'd go with the second one except flipping Mirai and Bradie because I like Nagasu and want her to get a medal. From a BoW argument, the first one would probably be best to get Nathan some rest time (I don't see him winning an individual medal so moot point for me) and reward Adam for his consistency.

Resting Bradie is unnecessary, IMO. She's no individual medal threat, unlike Nathan, and her scores will benefit from as much exposure as possible prior to the individual event. Two clean skates in the team event will give her momentum going into the individual, boosting her eventual PCS and placement there. I think it'd also give USFS a great opportunity to really see what Bradie is made of in terms of how solid she can be.

I think it has more to do with Nathan opting not to do both events in the team event than the USFS granting the Shib's wish to do both. Pairs is set, men would be split for Nathan: the decision to split comes between women and ice dance. The federation cares the most about their women and will do anything to hand out as many medals as possible to them. Although I love Mirai and want her to win a medal, she has done nothing to merit being included in the team event over either Hubbell & Donohue or Chock & Bates who are both medal threats and have consistently made the final the past 3-4 years.

According the judges, the Shibs have the strongest SD among the Americans... could be dicey if Hubbell & Donohue do the short in the team so it makes sense to have them do both though I don't like it at all. Seems like this season the USFS has really made US Nationals results pointless. Silver medal gets lopped off the Olympic team and a gold medal team gets shafted in place of the silver medal team. If it's true, I hope it fires Madison and Zach Sotnikova-style for the individual event. #DestinationBronze

To be clear, I don't think Adam or Vincent deserve the spot in the team event more than Mirai. It's just having a second man compete serves an actual purpose: allowing Nathan to be fully rested for the individual event. Really, all three dance teams deserve a spot more than any of the three individual skaters I mentioned, so it would be a pity if only one were able to compete.

Bradie posted on her Facebook page that she was doing the SP in the Team event but the post has since been removed (perhaps U.S. skating didn't want any skaters to let the cat of the bag just yet!). If true, hope that means Mirai will be doing the FS and therefore have a chance at a medal too!

AFAIK, Bradie did not have an agent at the time that she became U.S. champion and was named to the Olympic team.

It is apparently only very recently that she signed with IMG.


Bradie's brand-new agent is Yuki Saegusa -- who represents Nathan, the Shibs, Mirai, Karen, Gracie.

Yuki is a "she" (not a "he"), BTW. And based on Yuki's track record, I think Bradie will be in good hands.​

Apparently, Bradie and Mirai were looking good in practice yesterday. They even did SBS 3S together at the end of practice. Sounds like their having fun.

That's great news especially for Mirai. The more relaxed she is, the better she skates.

She also said this is the first time her father will come to see her in competition. He closed the restaurant for the first time to see his daughter skate. How sweet!

It's been such a hard four years for her. This time has to feel so good for her. I hope they all have a fun and skate free.

I hope to see Mirai simply embrace this experience. She isn't a medal contender and when she skates (if she) skates the long in the team event the results will already be pretty set, and a good performance won't boost USA too much and a bad won't hurt USA too much. She is one of myfavorites and I hope to just see her skate freely and with joy because she has waited so long for this!!
