2018 Olympic Season: Men's Figure Skating

I have a question. Japanese Tv showing Yuzu hitting quads and 3As perfectly over and over again. He landed 4Lo today. But I didn't see him jump triples other than 3T so far... Did he jump any 3F or 3Lz during official practice at all? Anyone knows?

He did 3F before and in the RT in the latest practice. He did 3Lo and 3Lz in his second practice earlier in the week.

So today i slept at 7am morning and woke up at 4pm. I hope i have chances not being slept before 6am morning with the last group. Sighhhhh** 😥

Just took a look at the starting order and WOW the last group. Almost didn't survive the last pairs group yesterday, definitely will not survive this one.

I'm so going to be an emotional wreck by the end of this, no matter what happens.

So wait, Yuzu is only planning 4Lo for the FS, right??? [emoji33]

xibsuarz was kind enough to calculate expected base values:

Assuming they hit the levels:

CHEN
50.88

UNO
51.31

HANYU
1Quad Loop = 12.0
2Fly. Camel Spin = 3.2
3Change Foot Sit Spin = 3.0
4Triple Axel* = 9.35
5Quad Toeloop + Triple Toeloop* = 16.06
6Step Sequence = 3.9
7Change Foot Combination Spin = 3.5

TOTAL BV = 51.01 (But if he goes for a 4S and not a 4Lo it will be 49.51)

JIN
TOTAL BV = 51.15

KOLYADA
51.15

FERNANDEZ
TOTAL BV = 47.75

CHAN
TOTAL BV = 43.55
I have nothing against Kolyada but I’m already mentally adjusting his expected/estimated BV given that he’s 2/15 on the QLz, so at this point, it’s not an “unplanned” error.

The Washington Post finally figured out Hanyu exists and did a piece on him, which can be more or less summed up as “gee, he wins a lot, lots of one-foot skating, he might beat Chen.” Speaking of Chen: I suppose we’ll know where his head is at after the short, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see Uno leading.

Uno and Hanyu are the only two competitors who I think can simply win the gold medal simply by showing up and skating well; everyone else needs an opportunity beyond just the performance of their lives. If Hanyu turns in a performance that’s 90% of his latest record-smash free skate at Worlds, I don’t see anyone but Uno being able to close the point gap. Uno is the answer to the question no one ever thought to ask: “What if someone had Asada and Weir artificially conceive and Sasha Cohen be the surrogate?” Which is probably why I love him.

America seems to think Rippon should have been ahead of Kolyada because Kolyada fell. This bodes poorly for the land of the free (pun intended). If Chen does more quads but Hanyu or Uno take gold (even with a hand down or an actual fall), I think we’re in for an Adelina-Yuna level fight, especially since Lipinski and Weir are ... surprisingly not helpful on the technical side.

Also, I’m not willing to take anything for granted with any kind of scoring shenanigans, judges inflating scores, PCS leveling out, everyone getting a new personal best, etc. Rizzo’s PCS numbers were an absolute joke, and Kolyada was overscored in comparison, although only Kolyada “matters,” as Rizzo won’t make the cut. We’ll see what’s up when we start seeing the first group’s scores. Pretty hard to draw too many interferences from the plotz-fest that was teams, other than that deductions are the new black.

Can I just say that watching comps where you have no emotional investment is awesome. I mean that really, I'm not snarking. I found that out in pairs.

Jason isn't here:sad21: I like Adam, but I do not not not like the Birds program, so I watch it going "meh". I  Deniss and Misha, but they are not going to medal. (Deniss better make the free, I love his FP:dev2:)

So I do not need Xanax and a drink:laugh:

I don't know, i just checked the TV guide on my cable and neither CBC nor TSN seem to show FS at 8 pm ET. I could only find FS (men SP) on NBC.

Yuzuru will have to earn his gold. Judging panels at the Olympics are stingy when in comes to skaters trying to repeat. The skater needs to beat not just the other skaters on the ice, but their skate from four years before. Think Yuna Kim in 2014 and Evgeni Plushenko in 2010.

This is so true. Now that pairs are over (after not going my way lol), I will enjoy all three remaining competitions no matter the outcome. I'll be happy for everyone! (unless someone really bombs, I'll feel sad for anyone who disappoints themselves badly...)

Well, Yuzuru's score from 2014 is not hard to beat by the entire last group, including the man himself. Men's is arguably the discipline that has changed the most in the last 4 years and Sochi Men's LP was an event we don't want to see a repeat of here. The problem for Yuzuru is that there are 5-6 skaters who can get that Gold on their best day, at Sochi it was him versus Patrick Chan. You cannot count on them to all fall apart. I think one of them will deliver, and the cleanest performance will win.

I will watch dance and ladies eyes wide open. No favourites, no stress.
But here, i will just lose some months of my life in the final group.

I feel all sorts of things. Part of me wants Yuzuru to win a second OGM but part of me said he has one already and while he earned it - had Patrick been a bit more sure footed he could have been silver. I like Nathan, I actually like Mikhail, and there is some charm to Shoma and the jumps or Boyang. Fernandez has an engaging personality. In some ways I wish Patrick Chan - no a contender at all and may not make top ten earns a bronze. I know he does not have the fan base or crazy support of Carolina, Savchenko, Yuzuru lovers but if what is good for the goose is good for the gander I wish him luck and incredible skates so he can have his Savchenko moment - at least individual bronze. I mean people were cheering and pushing and praying and voodooing against T and M for Savchenko to get gold - give poor Patrick a bronze:) I think we are wondering about Yuzuru and his health. And if not then expect Nathan and Shoma especially to duke it with Javier perhaps sneaking up the middle for the gold? Still hoping for a miracle on ice and Patrick medalling but there really is no hope:(

Just from recent memory, Skate Canada 2015 might give it a run for its money. Chan fell once and had an invalid 2Lz, Hanyu had two invalid jumping passes and scored a whopping 28.43 in technical elements and was beaten by Rippon (with a fall and a downgrade), Nyugen (with a fall, an edge call and a stsq2), and Brezina (with a fall, a level 1 spin, and a level 2 spin), and Daisuke Murakami won the segment with 80.88. Other highlights of that SP were Keegan Messing with a 1A and June Hyuong Lee with 2 invalid elements AND 2 deductions. LOL that was a nightmare.

Wow remind me never to mess up around you! You have quite the memory.
