Papadakis and Cizeron experienced a costume mishap at the beginning of their dance which became distracting and affected their effected technical execution throughout the routine.

“It was difficult,” said Papadakis. “It’s the first time that something like that happened. I tried to stay focused and finish without anything (else) happening.”

The team also had problems with spacing on their level 4 twizzle sequence, however, they still earned positive GOEs and met all key points on their pattern as well. The two-time World champions finished a close second with 81.93 points.

“It was a great performance considering the costume issue,” said Cizeron. “That is not something you get ready for in your mind when you start the program. It is hard to stay focused. We did not expect that when we started the program.

“We are not extremely disappointed,” he added, “but we could have done better without that problem.”

The team doesn’t seem to be too concerned with their placement after the short dance.

“Two points can be caught up,” noted Cizeron. “If we can do our best, we have chances to win. We have to stay focused and look forward. Tomorrow is a new day and we’ll do our best as always.”

Costume malfunction should get new start

Since a costume is essential equipment why didn’t Gabby stop the ska and ask judges to let them fix her dress? I don’t understand how that happened.

What area the rules regarding costume malfunctions? Gee that ruined the Sd for P/c.:(

The South Korean ice dancer girl also had a costume fall apart during the Team Event.

Some of the ice dancer ladies seemed to have very structurally fragile costumes, held together with string. One of the American ice dancers, can't remember who, had a costume with the entire side cut out. It nearly showed her bum ...

A restart would have been more real than this kabuki dance of all the judges pretending that the malfunction didn't happen. They just gave them the same marks they would have given them otherwise. :dev2:

I thought the same, but I'm not sure if some sort of deduction would have followed?

Ohhhh boy, so agree with this!! I have fielded soooo many questions this season about “why those girls have such thin straps, aren’t they worried?”, “her strap is gone! One slipped off halfway!! Why did she choose that dress?” and so on.

I couldn’t come up with anything other than the theory that too much “flesh-mesh” would inhibit movement and perhaps isn’t as necessary for dance due to the lack of jumping & throwing.

After a “was that a nipple??” (no, for the record, it was just a crystal pattern) today, I was on the verge of googling what the deal is with their costumes.

Does anyone know why they’re so flimsily attaches? Aesthetic reasons? A bare back easier for the guy to hold as opposed to a potentially slippery surface?
I’m guessing it’s not a money issue given how intricate most of the dresses are, especially those worn by the top teams, surely they could fork out for some mesh as opposed to wearing something less stable than a dance recital costume & hoping for the best!

No, they would have gotten much higher, look at the protocols, they lost points exactly where it was not right, including PCS.

And I'm for restarting because I would have been horrified to show my chest to the entire world. After Yura, now Gabby...

They were my favorite dance team of all time, I have been really waiting for this Olympics. And how could a team with serious Olympic gold aspirations do such a bad amateurish wardrobe error? She tried that dress before, she knew it was fragile, she was performing in it already, they have been preparing for this one evening for years. Why didn't she put a hemp rope around it? Would be much better than what happened!
I cannot imagine those errors on the amateur level, but in the Olympics?
I don't really know what the costume procedures are, how they are done, etc, I simply don't know how this fashion stuff works. But I simply cannot help being very harshly judgemental. I might get an infraction, but I cannot help thinking they are idiots! I am so disappointed.
I am waiting for a serious redemption in the FD.

I hope this doesn't turn into some sort of "nipplegate" a la Janet Jackson in the Super Bowl. I feel sorry for Gabby actually - imagine exposing yourself inadvertently in front of a large crowd and on TV. In Canada, CBC showed it in SLOW MOTION on the repeat - I thought it was in poor taste to do that.

I too was also wondering why they didn't just put mesh on the sides to help keep it in place.

Blame the IOC for the replay as the CBC shows everything live with no delay and they don't have any control over the feed. They are editing it out for further replays.

NO skaters should not get a restart. Kurt Browning explained the rules at nationals and said the IOC has updated them to ensure skaters don't bend the rules for a restart if something breaks. He also said a judge can stop the skate for safety reasons but there are deductions and greater deductions if the judge stops it. I think he said a skater has 30s to fix the issues and it's a one point deduction, if something falls off 1 point deductions. I also think he said it all goes back to Tanya and her laces and has evolved over time.

Yes it sucks but a skater has to take responsibility for their equipment. In this case Kurt also mentioned she was having issues with the dress all week so why wasn't it sewn , taped stapled whatever needs done to keep it closed if they knew it was going to be an issues.

Prior to entering the ice for the warmup, the female coach with them in the Kiss and Cry was trying to repair it. Check out the NBC coverage.

RE: A comment I left in the "Pairs" thread on the topic of the televised slow-mo 'reveal'...

I'm sure they would have avoided showing the clip if they knew about it...

Remember, it's the home broadcaster's production team (often sitting out in a 'production van' in the parking lot) that makes all the quick decisions on what to show in the recaps and in slow-motion. The 'producer' (director) may have been too busy with calling the camera shots during P/C's performance to notice what had happened to her dress.

  • I mean, many of the skating fans commenting tonight in this forum/thread did not notice, and their only job was to watch the TV broadcast (...not 'produce' the broadcast)!!

Also remember, they have only the amount of time the skater uses to "take their bow/curtsy" (~30 seconds) to have all the recaps teed up and ready to go. In such a short amount of time, it's unlikely anyone could even phone or text a message to the broadcast van in time to stop the 'slow-mo nipple reveal'... this is LIVE television afterall...

I say, cut 'em some slack. I'm sure it'll be edited out of the rebroadcast material once it is noticed and pointed out! (pardon the 'sorta' dirty pun ...hehe)

Cizeron designs their costumes and Gab didn't have to accept something so flimsy and cut out to where if there was an issue it could expose her. They also have been having issue with her costume neck clasp for awhile now, so they only have themselves to blame for this.
