Deniss Vasiljevs

I think Deniss is a very lovely skater. His musicality is really nice and I think he should be given more PCS as well. Anyways, good job at the Olympics!!!

A nice interview with Stephane. Every skater should have a coach that believes in them like Stephane believes in Deniss! I tried to make the Google translated English more readable, hope it's correct.

"When Deniss performs his own hopes, he will reach the peak of the world. He has something more [than an ordinary skater]." There are athletes who can complete the quadruple jump, but they are not at the top of this sport. "When these jumps are also mastered by Deniss, he's going to be because he has everything he needs for a great figure skater, "says Lambiel. "That day will come, he's only 18 years old, in front of two or three more Olympic games, he has already gained experience from the Pyeonchang Olympics, but in the future he has to work hard on the quadruple jumps, and he will move up. Already now, Deniss is progressing fast and in the world rank is The 14th place. "

"Deniss is very ambitious, he works very hard and is very passionate about figure skating. That's all it takes to become a champion. Deniss has the necessary fire," said the athlete's coach.

"I feel comfortable in the Latvian delegation, because I have very good relations with my athletes Vasiljevs and Diana Nikitina. I support them with all my heart as if they were Swiss athletes of my homeland. I do not even think they would be from another country. We are a single family, fighting together, "said Lambiel.

:scratch2: Lavenderblossom, do you really think that a summary for 20 minutes documentary is short? O.K. I'll try. Fortunately, Chris speaks English and quite a lot of the information is known.

Did you notice where Deniss got his sunny smile? It's inherited. It's from his mother!!! She is simply beaming!!:)

I'm so sorry, I was being stupid :hopelessness: I would be extremely grateful for anything if you have time, but if not that's fine. And yes, that brilliant smile runs in the family, so nice to see

If it will be helpful.

:thank:

I love the vest he sported in the Olympics. It's so pretty, and also of a very particular design/pattern/colour scheme. Does it have some meaning? Something that represents Latvian tradition?

The documentary that was aired yesterday is available here but you have to have adblock turned off. https://tvplay.skaties.lv/parraides/dokumentalas-filmas/919344?autostart=true
Would love a quick summary or translation of this too, it's not very long

Here it is. Hope that somebody will have patience to read it.

The main reason why Dennis arrived in Latvia is his school- Russian Lyceum. He has to pass tests in all the subjects to get grades and get to the next level, and he has a few days to do it. He has to work with the help of private tutors. The teachers compile exercises specially for him and send him on the Internet.

He misses everything connected with the school. He feels at school as a tourist, because he is not used to be with his peers. He has a feeling that he can’t relax and as if tries to look better in their eyes.

05.35 It’s good that that there are several teachers in the family. His grandfather is a doctor of science in mathematics and helps him a lot.
Although Deniss is at home, his parents just do not see him. The chat on the phone – “Love. Kiss you.”

Mom asks every day what he wants for lunch and hears a variety of surprising orders. She has to cook for him. For example, he would like lasagna! But it is not allowed! This is something the coach must not hear!:drama:

Would the parents have let him skate if they had known all about the forthcoming difficulties? Yes, but they would have done a lot of things differently. There was no experience, no possibilities at that time. There were no specialists who could help. It’s a pity! Then the whole process would run easier, faster and the results be better.

Jelena (Daugavpils Fan club administrator) says that she would like the people in his own country to support him more.

Ratings in figure skating are often not objective. He would like them to be fairer. The big countries are the leading ones and the judges sometimes evaluate their athletes differently. But it has been so and will always be. The only thing he can do is to skate better than anybody else.

12.10. (father) Deniss’ performances have a lot to do with feelings. The results depend on the emotional mood. It is art on ice.

When you qualify for the Olympics, you can start looking for sponsors. It's done by Christopher. He is Stefane's classmate and helped him after school between the competitions. Now he is doing the same for Deniss. He sees how similar they both are.:agree:

(Deniss)I do not put myself above the others or lower. I can not tell which artist is better, which worse. The best is the one who can show his utmost, all his potential.

(The commentator during “Bring Him Home” was a bit ironical and reasoned whether or not Lambell was reborn in Deniss's image and accidentally named him Deniss Lambiel) :hap10:

:thank:It was such a pleasure to hear what Chris said about Deniss.
I can only add that none of the athletes was so popular last week as Deniss. Lots of interviews with him and Stephane. Lots of articles everywhere. Lots of support from his fans in Latvia.
Now we have to wait till Worlds!

Someone tell Stephane about the lasagna, lol. Just kidding XD

Thank you so much for translating the video! Of course I have the patience to read about Deniss.

I hope he was able to grades he wanted. It's really interesting to know about his school life. (Deniss seems to be having trouble with reported speech, which I agree, I hate it too!) And it's a bit sad he feels like a stranger at school, but it is unavoidable I suppose.

And more information about Chris is great. I have always wondered how long he has known and worked with Stephane.

Thank you so so much for the translation :thank:

Aww. Having cameras around whenever he gets to go back does not help him to feel like a normal student either. But he is a smart young man so I doubt he will have much trouble catching up on schoolwork :)

I think his parents have done a marvelous job! I don't doubt it must have been very difficult. But he is making great progress in spite of being from a small fed and perennially underscored. He was never going to be a kid with 2937 quads, but he has different and equally rare talents. There are quite a few senior skaters who could stand to learn from even his junior performances, about listening to music, expressing emotion and engaging with the audience, and his ever high quality spins and steps. When he was just 14-15 he was already recognised as a high-level junior with a very promising future. There will always be 'what-if's, but the past cannot be changed, and there is always things out of our control. We have to look to the future - and Deniss' prospects for the future are very good. :agree:

I was happy to hear Chris' compliments too. I am glad for the media attention for now, because I think it will help Deniss in finding sponsors, and then he (rather, me lol) won't have to worry about his finances :)

His Japanese fans on Twitter tracked it down a little while ago - it's a jacket from a Japanese company.
The company also made a post about it on their website http://www.sousou.co.jp/item_date/2018/02/17 ... and made Deniss's name their discount code for the day
Google translate tells me the print is designed to resemble dragon scales, and that it's designed to retain heat ie. to keep warm. I think there is something about it being based off an outfit worn by a historical warrior, but I can't make heads or tails of it :scratch2:

On another note, I bought the SPUR magazine and once the Olympics are over I will try and scan the pages. Maybe we can find someone to translate, or else band together and have a decent go ourselves

Thanks so much!!! How cool is that, I wonder if he found it and bought it while he was in Japan, or it was yet another one of those clever gifts from some genius Japanese fans! And yes, it does say it was designed after a traditional attire for the warriors in the battle field. I bet he did a huge publicity for the company and the sale of the jacket skyrocketed

Oh BTW I did by the SPUR magazine as well, I also bought a copy for Jelena and Deniss's mother and sent them to Latvia, and along with it I did attach a translation of the main article in English. I should have thought of sharing it here as well, sorry for the delay but here it is...

My coach and Me.
Through his appearances in various shows, and by flashing his skills as a true entertainer during the performance at NHK Trophy 2017, Deniss Vasiljevs have already charmed Japan, and now working hard preparing for the 2018 Olympics. His coach is none other than the legendary Stephane Lambiel, one of the most loved figures in the skating world. We came up close and personal with the duo for this special interview!.

Deniss Vasiljevs of Latvia, with his Hollywood star like good looks and creative spins, is one of the biggest rising talents in the world of figure skating today. Deniss relocated to Switzerland in 2016, and started training under Stephane Lambiel as his coach. He competed in NHK Trophy for two years in a row. This interview took place on the day after he scored his personal best at his free skate. He tells us skating in Japan is a huge inspiration for him.
"The audience in Japan is awesome. They always show me so much support. At this competition, I managed to improvise the program while I skated, I made up for the jump I messed up earlier in the second half of the program. I am proud of myself for having been able to maintain the composure and think, and adjust quickly to make the best of the situation. I was also subject to the doping test, which was also an interesting experience."

The music of his choice for this season's programs are "Raccondita Armonia" from Puccini's opera Tosca for SP, and Sway by Michael Bublè for FP, which shows his considerable versatility to different kind of music.
"I like the Classical music the best. It's the foundation of all types of music, and I don't think I have ever met a piece which I didn't enjoy. Music helps me along in my every day life. I like listening to classic rock while I am training hard. It depends on my mood, too, I also like jazz to chill out with. Perhaps it's a bit odd, but I also like traditional folk music. Music often takes me to my own fantasy world. I enjoy inventing a story, or world of my own imagination, and I also express it in my drawing some times. Music really inspires me in different ways.
Deniss now lives in the beautiful chalet of Stephane in Champery Switzerland, along with some of Stephane's students. Breathing the pure, majestic nature that surrounds him, he also nurtures his own sensibility.
I am an early bird, I like to start the day early. Sometimes I get up at 5 o'clock and go on hiking. Summertime in Switzerland is beautiful, and especially during very early hours. I really love watching the morning dews on the leaves, which are left by the early morning mist. The bird singing, sound of the mountain stream, sometimes I spot a rainbow. I feel like I am in another world. It is important for me to be immersed in my own thoughts, to feel more inspiration for more creativity hatching, and this happens when I am in touch directly with the nature while I am hiking.
This is a big year for Deniss, who will represent Latvia in the Olympics just around the corner. He maintains a unique approach with his own focus to figure skating.
"Figure skating today demands jumps above all. Need for the level of difficulty, and number of jumps in programs, are increasing day by day. Of course I am training hard to master various quadruple jumps. But having said that, I also want to keep my focus on the artistic side of the sport. To me it is very important. I am a perfectionist. When I am cooking, or drawing, or even when I am singing (yes, I am not very good, but I also enjoy singing!) - I set a goal and strive for what I want to achieve. And that is the same with skating. On the ice, I want to be able to perform difficult jumps, as well as be a true artist at the same time! I am also a bit of a philosopher, I guess. When all my hard work pays off at a competition and I managed to show the whole world what I can do to the fullest, the satisfaction I get from the moment is like nothing else, it is so special. But at the core of such a performance, there is always art. That makes the quality of my performance truly special."

Stephane Lambiel has been to 3 Olympics, and won the silver medal in Turin, in 2006. Today, he is highly sought after from around the world, both as a professional performer and as a choreographer. There are also considerable number of young skaters who wish to learn from the wizzard of spins and artistry, and in recent years he started to coach some of them - and of course, one of them is Deniss.
"I have been coaching since 2012. It wasn't something I had thought of doing during my competitive years as a skater. I always pictured myself as a choreographer, when I looked into the future. But as it turned out, as I was doing the job of choreography, I could observe and grasp the individuality of some skaters, and I saw the possibility of guiding them to enhance their unique talents, and help them attain their bests, as a whole, beyond choreography. So "coach Stephane" just happened. It is a rewarding experience, it also helps to understand and discover more about myself while guiding my students.
This time, Stephane will head to the 2018 Games as Deniss's coach.
"Deniss is very intelligent. He skates with such passion. He also has such a keen sensitivity - feels, detects and absorbs everything that happens around him, be it a sound, or a smell. This sensitivity reflects the depth and power in his expression on the ice, and that reaches out to the audience, drawing intense emotions. This is his special talent. Technically, what sets him apart is his edge work. He is totally in tune with his blades that are making contacts with the ice, sensing continuously exactly how they are reacting to the ice, millimetre to millimetre. His objective is building on the stamina, and physical strength in order to enhance his expressiveness. Stronger body will help him gain more confidence both in his artistry and jumping technique, which he already has mastered yet he can improve upon them even further. And in order to move into the hightest level, he will need to perform some quadruple jumps.
Stephane, who thoroughly understand the unique charm Deniss possesses, explains the choice of the music for this season.
For the Free Program, I wanted to emphasize his talent as an entertainer and his dance skills. The program has a story. In the beginning, he is alone at a bar, drunk in his thoughts, he wonders if he would ever meet someone who would really love him. Then there is a drastic change of the mood, and the music picks up the pace, he steps up and start unleashing all his charm for the whole world to see. He demonstrates this wild switch of emotions so perfectly, and as you could see yesterday, he drove the whole stadium wild! Deniss and I worked together in creating the SP to Tosca. The song "Raccondita Armonia" is taken from the scene where Mario, an artist expresses his love to the diva Tosca, while painting - we thought this is a nice theme for Deniss, who is also an artist, to represent. And he lives up to the powerful vocal of Andrea Boccelli.
Deniss will be allowed only a few minutes for his performance at the biggest stage of the sport, at the Olympics. But I hope and believe, that the lad will go out there and show the whole world who Deniss Vasiljevs is, leave a lasting impression, and come out proud. Go Deniss, this is your moment!

Oh BTW I did by the SPUR magazine as well, I also bought a copy for Jelena and Deniss's mother and sent them to Latvia, and along with it I did attach a translation of the main article in English. I should have thought of sharing it here as well, sorry for the delay but here it is...

Thank you so much!!!

Would you mind if I translate it for Russian fans?

So sad ((( I mean, now we know which way it turns out. He didn't show the best performances, and it's really sad((

Thank you so much!!!

Да конично!! Please do! :agree: My pleasure!!!
Yeah... I was also gutted about his underperformance... but come to think about it, his coach didn't do too well at his first Olympics in 2002, but he came back after 4 years to win the silver!! Most of all, accordint to his tweet, Deniss was clearly upbeat, in a positive mood and said he was motivated more than ever for the next Olympics - so we must follow his example!

Yes, you are completely right))
Just... I think, all of us waited too much for this Olympics... Well, I definitely did)

It wasn't true or you decided to not translate it?

I did see a tweet saying something like it sold out, which is probably not true, but imagine

There were little speech bubbles around some of the photos with some text, outside of the main interview, which is where I think that came from.

Ah, yes... lavenderblossom is correct, it is the little speech bubble part, which I forgot to translate...
It goes like this,
Stephane: haven't you grown a little taller?
Deniss: I think I am about 174cm now. about as tall as you, coach!
S: But you have longer set of legs!
D: how about the arms?
S: Your arms are longer than mine, too!
D: Really? But your hairstyle is longer than mine!"
