I don't actually mind Moulin Rouge, it's great entertainment and in the real world I might pay money to see a full Moulin Rouge skating show. Just as I pay real money to go to the theater, cinema, opera or a full ballet on ice (now that's an idea!). I think there is definitely room for what V/M is doing, as people have mentioned before there's an abundance of riches in skating today, and there's room for the new and the old alike. But... you can't take what V/M are doing and praising it as mesmerizing artistic performance, when what it is is pure, skillful entertainment. The Canadians had an opportunity to do some great tango choreography on Roxanne, they went for the simple approach of skating to some of the music highlights (the twizzle finishing pose is the perfect example). It might be fine for the casual viewer, but the dance aficionados might like a bit more meat to their bone. Also great point on the Danes, that piece of choreography integrates so much dance in it, you can understand the music from watching, where as in V/M's MR you need to hear the music in order to understand they're doing a tango.
And everyone needs to give credit to P/C where credit is due. They're not just lyrical or skating to classical music as people try to label it and demean its importance, they are the absolute first taking the page out of contemporary ballet and incorporating its aesthetic in ice dance, with full commitment. It's sophisticated choreography that reveals its layers with every new viewing. Of course dancing experts are going to prefer the second, it's closer to the art form that they respect and admire.

I feel there is a group of skaters who really enjoy each other's company. We see them popping up on instagram preparing the gala and having fun: C/B, H/D, C/L, P/C, yuzu, javi ... I've never been a fan of Anna and Lucas' skating but boy do I like them as people and performers. I will miss them.

She was a total sweetheart, the cameras moved from Gaby having her emotional moment at the end of the FD to Anna wiping her tears and applauding. To me, there's no greater compliment than having your rivals in awe of what you're doing.

I don't think at all that they had a hand in the broken clip. At least not until some serious evidence is on the table.
That is not why I brought this up.

They lost the FD and won the SD with a margin while Gaby was not able to skate normally. If they have any respect for them, and if you are a decent human being, wouldn't you at least acknowledge those blatant facts instead of pretending that you won gold on your own merit?
That's what I would expect from all of these skaters, who in interviews generally all are extremely sweet and warm and lovely people.

I disagree here, I don't think they need to acknowledge all the mishaps P/C went through in order to be good sports. After all, Hanyu will not tell you how lucky he was Nathan had a meltdown in the short. V/M mentioned in an interview they knew going into the free they knew they had to be absolutely perfect, and they are happy they managed to do that. Which is fair, PC with two perfect programs would've won, the dress was obviously an issue hindering their marks, but can we absolutely say w/o the dress, they would've been perfect? I don't think we can.

Well, I'm sorry, but then we have a different opinion on sportsmanship. Claiming merit when you were lucky is not my idea of either sportsmanship or decent behaviour. And I'm not talking about a 100% certain win, but we all know for a fact that it would have been a completely different ball game. Due to a dress malfunction, not a bad day or bad skating.

And I think that if you are right, then G/G are not only bringing a new style to Ice Dancing, but also to sportsmanship and how to be a decent human being before being a competitive athlete. As mentioned a few posts above, they are not afraid to simply state the obvious and put the truth on the table.
It is something that makes them who they are for me, along with all their skating magic. Their honesty and sincerity.

Still annoyed they couldn't represent Danemark at the Olympics and can't wait to see them at Worlds.

Actually I think Hanyu has actually noted that if some of his competitors had skated to their very best he would not have won...

Fair enough, my point was no athletes will go out of their way to minimize their result and outright say that it's due to someone else making a mistake. Especially with the gap between P/C and V/M being what it is.
Could V/M mention the incident and say it's unfortunate that it maybe ruined part of the competition for their biggest rivals? Sure. I don't think saying oh, P/C probably would've won if not for the dress incident is realistic though, or expecting V/M to be less proud of their accomplishment (after all, they did put out two perfect dances from a tech. pov and thus made it impossible for P/C to win after the SD problem).

Honestly, I'm really trying to avoid reasons why I should dislike them considering I don't know them personally (I have a hard enough time not cringing at how Scott celebrates his victories), maybe they talked with P/C outside the camera view, maybe they didn't.

Haha, I get what you're saying, I just thought I'd mention that because you had mentioned him specifically and I had already read that quote, but I don't disagree with you in general. It's great when someone acknowledges their fortune but I don't actually expect many to do so. Then again I expect very little from most people, in the hope of being pleasantly surprised every now and then :).
 
I don't expect any of that either, though when acknowledged like Yuzu, it is very nice and fair play. But Yuzuru is a prince so I fully expect him to act chivalrous and honorable :biggrin:
 
I am probably too naive, but yes, I do expect that kind of acknowledgement if you pretend to be a decent human being in 2018.
ESPECIALLY on that level. Noblesse oblige.
