Evgenia Medvedeva

Although I'm a European, I don't keep up with Russian media or what social drama is going on in the Federation... But this is interesting. Would they have the same issue with Zagi or Mustafina due to their ethnic origin? It is funny how now Russian media pressures her to talk about Yuzuru Hanyu and their relationship but if they actually got together would they shame her for not being with a "good Russian man"? I honestly don't understand why would they not want her to enter competitions for Russia... So many famous Russians are of different ethnic origins (Who are somewhat celebrated in Russia) like Viktor Tsoi (interestingly enough Kukushka is his song originally) and even frickin Stalin. Or is Russia going through this "wE wANt tO hAvE aN eThNiCAlLy cLEan tEAmS" like Hungary is right now (Our prime minister literally said this :palmf:)? Why the problem with Armenia? If she was half french would they call her a western spy now?

They asked Magarita Mamun (gymnastic) the same question after Rio. No reason to dramatize. They are just interest in her family backround.

I have only one question: Who?
Evgenia is Russian media darling. She is real celebrity without any doubt right now.
I think this question have another side. Why she is not "so proud" to be Armenian. I mean this is something buried deep inside her family. It's very personal.(maybe this is why she never mentioned her father, and even refuse to take his last name).
So I think this is not our business.

We were discussing how the questions for her father were weird and about her private life. I said that if she doesn't want to talk about something than she doesn't need to and that media was trying to get her dad to talk. Then a person answered with this:

"There're already a bunch of patriotic idiots who question her legitimacy to compete for Russia because she's half Armenian already. This question just fuels those people's idiocy."

So I became curious of the situation. That's all. From my understanding this answer was concerned around how SOME people have issues with her.
I know Zhenya is popular and I am very proud of it. If you read my previous posts you'll see that I strongly stand by people leaving her alone about her life that she herself doesn't want to share.

Russia is literally an union of many peoples and ethnic groups, it would be very ridiculous for nationalist disputes to begin. As you say, Zagitova, Mustafina, Margarita, Elizavetha, etc. all have genes from some non-Scandinavian people.

I don't understand why they ask her these questions, Evgenia was born in Moscow Russia, her mother's family is also Russian, her father was born in the USSR, and about her last name, well, it's obvious, her parents divorced, maybe there's a family theme there , but we should not care.

I've actually seen more "salty" (for lack of a better word) comments from some Armenians upset by the fact that Zhenya identifies as Russian, than the other way around. It's a sore point for some, but not necessarily in the way you might think it is.

It is not about "identifying" as Russian or Armenian, under the legal aspect, if she was born in Moscow, she is Russian, if her father is Armenian, she has Armenian "ancestry", but she is still Russian. Those are the laws in any country. The same goes for Karen Chen, Nathan, Mirai Nagasu, etc. Their families are Asian, but they are legally American.:confused2:

I meant Russian in the sense of ethnicity (русская). In Russian there are two separate words for ethnic Russian and Russian citizen, that are both translated the same in English. Zhenya uses the word "ethnic Russian" for herself and this upsets some Armenians.

ofcourse it is about identifying for some people but she identify as russian, she is even half-russian...why are we talking about this?

On the same press conference there was also a tatar question to alina...so we should just chill and be happy that she will skate on March the 3rd in the Megasport Arena

I mean I wouldn't care personally if she wanted to identify this or that... As for me she could go and get a Japanese citizenship and consider herself Japanese XD (just a joke now people, just a joke).
I just hope that people will leave her alone with these Armenian questions. Here in Hungary we have many half-Hungarian kids as well who are famous and when they go to give an interview it's always the stupid questions about their heritage (I of course support them embracing it, but some of these kids don't really care of their heritage since it should not distinguish them from other kids) when clearly the kids want to talk about THEIR own achievements nothing else.
Either ways, Evgenia took up the maiden name of her grandmother... a lot of famous people do that actually. One of them is Natalie Portman. So yeah. Case closed.
Also she was brought up by her Russian Babushka and mother so of course she is distant from her Armenian roots.
I just hope she won't get any hate.

That's none of our business! Anyways it's interesting that Yagudin interviewed her considering he too went through what she went through concerning her training mate. I like him, he has always been so supportive of Janny ❤

Some people obviously don't know there are some other ways how to feel ethinicity and citizenship. There are two main ways, "ius sanguinis" which means law of blood, and "ius soli", which means law of the land.
Ius sanguinis is concept that child has the right for citizenship by ethnicity of its parent no matter where the child is born, whether ius soli means that child is provided by the citizenship of the country where it was born. Of course real law of any country stands somewhere between those two concepts and has features from both systems for some situations, but it is always closer to either of those two. On the west (western Europe and US) it is closer to ius soli and the concept means "we are the state of citizens of different origin, we came to agreement to settle our state on the base of citizenship." That comes from the historical reasons, establishnemt of the United states is exemplary here.
On the other hand, in central and eastern Europe more dominant is the concept of Ius sanguinis, which means "we are the state of people of the same origin, with same language, cultural heritage etc." thats due to historical reasons too, during the times nations had to face challenges from outside (stronger neighbours, attacks of nomads etc.) and had to fight for the right to make decisions about themselves. So if Armenians consider Evgenia Armenian due to her ancestry form the parental side, its based on this concept. And of coure Russians consider her russian, she was born and lives all her life in russia. But questions about how you feel about armenian cultural heritage are considered pretty normal.

Funny anecdote: if zhenya makes it to beijing she'll be 22 and the olympics'll held on 02/2022. And her birthday is 19/11/1999.
The magical 2s
