Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

・He likes to talk with kohai and Yuzuru is a person who is friendly to senpai, so he feels Yuzuru is easy to talk with. Yuzuru is often upset after making mistake in his performance of the ice shows, and Oda asks him "Are you ok?" and then Yuzuru mumbles "I'm ok" being frustrated at himself. But afterwards, Yuzuru comes to Oda and says "I'm sorry for my bad attitude earlier, thank you very much" (). Oda likes this kind of gap in Yuzuru. Yuzuru likes trendy things, he seems to be playing games and doing the internet a lot at home because it is snowy in Toronto. He does not go out with Yuzuru, he sometimes asks him out for meal etc, but it has not come true yet.

・He thinks Yuzuru is a type of skater who jumps with high technique rather than with physical ability, so he will be able to make up for the lack of stamina with technique if he decides to skate some more years.

I remembered one thing, when Fumie Suguri was talking about Yuzuru on TV last year, she said Yuzuru was the only kohai skater who was friendly to her  (You know it doesn't mean other kohai skaters are unfriendly, I'm not confident in explaning the senpai-kohai situation in Japanese society so please see here if you are curious. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senpai_and_kōhai)
Maybe as not so formal.

I have observed that from Yuzuru, he is respectful, but no overly formal.

Just look at his relationship with Shoma and Satoko, who are younger; he even say after Olympics that it was Shoma who started addressing him as Sempai after they reconnected and started to compete against each other again.

Thank you for the info.

Oda wrote about Yuzuru in his book :)

・His favorite performances from Yuzuru are PW in the individual event of Sochi Olympics and SEIMEI in GPF. (He wrote this book in December of 2017) And if he was asked "what is the iconic program of Yuzuru?", he would say SEIMEI.

・Yuzuru is a type of skater who had never been in the history, and we may not see anyone like him in future. He analyzes Yuzuru has everything for doing this sport and all he has is at the highest level. He summarized Yuzuru as a skater into 5 points, 1) (looks like) he has almost no preparation before the jumps, 2) his transition is incredible, 3) his jumps, spins, steps, all are matched the music and expressed well, 4) he has no limit and does not set the limit, 5) after reaching the goal, he finds another one and keeps going forward.

・By looking at Yuzuru closely, it is not like he is super strong mentally. He has heard of Yuzuru saying "I am so nervous, my legs are shaking" before the competition. He thinks Yuzuru is strong not because he doesn't get tense but because he is able to overcome the nervousness.

・Most of the skaters don't talk about figure skating each other when they are off the ice, but he likes watching the performances of other skaters and so does Yuzuru, so they talk a lot about figure skating. Yuzuru is eager to study the sport, he watches practices of others in the ice shows.

Given if his observation is true.
I am glad to be born on the era that I can see Yuzu live on TV.
Now I want to see him live. Why did I found about him so late? :palmf:
Anyway he will surely comeback for his quad axel. And hopefully I will be there to see it with my own eyes.

One good thing about Yuzuru expressing "landing 4A in competition" as his goal is that he is taking the pressure of competition off himself. Now, when he is entering in competitions people would not expect him to win or defend this title and that record. He is there to do something for himself, his own ambition, and people are not going to care about the final result. Not that he is not going to try to win but both his focus and fans' focus will shift from completion to his 4A which he is doing for his own desire and it is going to make everything so stress free. Of course that's what I think and it may not be true

Yuzu's priority list for the upcoming seasons:

1. 4A and full recovery of his body
2. 4A and staying healthy as long as possible
3. 4A with +5 GOE, 10% bonus, hydroblading entrance and rippon (just kidding :laugh2:)

4. First Gold in first GP of the season and first Gold at 4CC (I think these blemishs really bother him )
5. Set standards and milestones under the new scoring system (the changes should accomodate him really well)

I think from now on Yuzu's going to enter every single competition with an incredible self confidence that we've never seen before. Something like a Yuzu-God-Mode.
He has nothing to prove anymore, there's no specific tournament where he has to peak at all costs. He can do, whatever he wants to do and he will - for sure. That's why he might be unbeatable over the next years. The pressure is on the youngsters now, who want to win titles. Milano might be their last chance in the near future, if Hanyu-sama is on fire

----------
* I wouldn't be surprised, if Yuzu decided to do some badass elements like 4-4 combos, butt spins or delayed single axels in competition

I think I understand, it's not that other kouhai skaters are not friendly, but these kouhai might be hesitant to approach their senpai, they aren't sure what to do around their senpai. But bubbly Yuzuru isn't afraid to befriend everyone :) I don't know what's it like in other countries, but in my country it's a bit similar to Japan, you respect those who are older than you, there are honorifics to call those who are older.

3. 4A with +5 GOE, 10% bonus, hydroblading entrance and ribbon (just kidding :laugh2:)

Pardon my lack of knowledge, what is this 'ribbon' like?

Ribbon is the varied air position, where the skater raises both arms above his head. Yuzu did it with his 4T+3T combination in this season's short programme ;)
But take note that he didn't do it with the 4T, only the triple (which is very impressive, too). That's why I don't think, we'll see any ribbon-quad in the near future.
Maybe Yuzu will try a ribbon-3A, if he stabilizes the 4A. That could be possible but tough... :drama:

I think your autocorrect is messing with the sentence. Although the thought of Yuzu jumping with one of those gymnastic ribbons is cool.

Hihi yes, shame on me  Didn't notice my autocorrect. It has to be "rippon", right?

I just had to think of those golden ribbons at the Rostelekom gala. Yuzu doing a 4A with those would be the jump of the century
