Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Not to mention the language barrier. I remember Brian saying that Yuzu could be holding a press conference in Japanese and then say things even Brian didn't know about. I imagine with Javi it's probably easier to just talk about life in general, especially since Javi seems to have acclimated a bit more with Canadian style life. Yuzu a bit less so and that's his prerogative. He's there for skating and leaves it at that (and it got him 2 olympic gold medals so you can't really argume about it). It's just seems like Javi was there for a bit of living too.

Absolutely! I had to spend a summer in China for work and realized there was no way on earth I was ever going to learn Chinese. I couldn't even get them to understand my "thank you" (sheeuh-shuh or something like that.) The man at the hotel thought I was asking for new sheets LOL. Asian vs European languages - omg what a learning curve. Huge props to anyone who masters the jump, so to speak, Yuzu included. I love to listen to his English and he seems to do well with Brian, Tracy, Javi, etc., but it must be exhausting.

Thanks for the replies. I think I've been too sensitive about Brian's remarks. He does seem to really love Yuzuru in the Kiss and Cry - I'm always touched by him holding Pooh and when he reaches up to hold Yuzuru's face in his hands. It's heartwarming that Yuzuru is already back in Toronto after the second gold - I would never ever have predicted he'd be back so soon. So that must mean something.

And I'm interested at the rumor that Wakaba Higuchi might be taking Brian Orser as her coach. It would be so cool if there was another Japanese skater working there - and maybe I read this here (forgive me if I'm repeating) but Midori Ito saying that Wakaba can do a 3A and should try - well, who better for axel jump hints than Yuzuru Hanyu (and Brian Orser, the first man to land one in competition, right?) Like Yuzuru might say, this could be an anime plot!

She has landed them in practice, and they are really nice, but they just aren't consistent. And I believe there is another Japanese male skater at TCC but his name escapes me at the moment. But I'm sure Yuzu would be thrilled to give Wakabond some pointers.

That's great to hear. Yuzuru seems to have such fun with the other skaters on the Japanese team.

I agree completely. It's clear that despite being an athlete of his calibre, Javi is interested in normal life things like having a thriving social life and relationships. Yuzu, on the other hand, makes figure skating his one and only. There's nothing wrong with either of these lifestyles because they fit the needs and goals of both athletes.

Ok, I am going to put that up on my wall, I think that gaze could defeat demons.

Orser did said it himself, he don’t have a favourite students, they are all special in their own way, and he cares about all of them. Yuzu living with his mother is a fact, and I don’t think Orser said it because his disagree of Yuzu’s way of living. “Yuzu bearth and live figure skating.” said Orser, he is fully aware that Yuzu choose that lifestyle himself, and I think he respect that.
Each time when Orser is jumping up and down for his students on the rink side or said something reflexively, like: Never underestimates Mr. Hanyu. I can feel how he adores his students wholeheartedly. I think Yuzu feel it too, that’s why Yuzu could stick around TCC for so long. ;) don’t worry, Yuzu is in good hand.

"His performance on ice draws the audiences from the stands into his own world. Same here"

"…Taking a mix of brilliant and some not-so-brilliant questions in stride, he shone like a diamond"

"We take our hats off"
Such glowing praise for Yuzu.

Thank you very much for sharing!

He is so well spoken, I wish I have his speaking skills, usually my job interviews are a mess :palmf:

I liked the parts when he answers about the what ifs of Shoma and Nathan, he was clear and secure. Maybe someone thinks he's a bit cocky or something, but these questions were tricky, I can imagine when you've just won your second Olympics and the press just focus on that things and Idk what I'd have answer..., why they didn't ask him what would happen if he landed the 4Tlo3S , but well :ohwell:

It makes me happy that he can feel all the people cheers and support, and he can be sure that he's an inspiration for us (in my case,he taught me to never give up and I'll be grateful all my life for having the oportunity of following such an incredible athlete and human being)

That seems like a sticky disaster waiting to happen. The things Yuzu inspires seems endless

I’m not 100% sure this is supposed to be Yuzuru (I think that’s the character for his name written on the bread, and “gold”), but I remember people saying a bakery was selling “Yuzuru bread” and had a hard time picturing what it would look like. Then I saw a tweet of this picture:

And it seems there was a fan selling Yuzuru lollipops at Worlds in Milan.

His name is on it...but it doesn't look anything like him. --We can call it abstract art!

Ok, I finally have the time to watch it completely, here at some of the things that called my attention the most:
China giving him a Panda plushy, and telling him to go on to Beijing... that was cute China
The one dream that has become true, and talking about the way kids came made the dreams true; and I´m the only one that see a little teary eye Yuzuru? :sad21:
His admiration for Michael Jordan...
The way he talks about wanting to quit as a kid but pondering is his life would go to waste... honestly I want 1/4 of Yuzuru sense of responsibility and resolution
Yuzuru´s parents just saying "sure, go on, quit"... Yuzuru´s parents are totally not stage parents, never in the spotlight, only supporting from behind and putting the kids happiness ahead of of everything else... I surely would love and interview with them
Dick Button´s mesage to Yuzuru; after this I can forgive Dick for his snarky twitter commentary of Olympics...
Yuzuru´s confidence ; some people would call him cocky, but you don´t become an elite sport man with out it and it surely you can see it in this interview...
Yuzuru´s swith on/off competitive mode... good he is so aware of it

This was a great interview

I haven't watched it yet but that's surprising to hear about Michael Jordan. Usually younger people defer to Lebron.

Even not following the sport itself I would think the same. Lebron is THE guy right now. But my friend said that MJ is huge in Asia and still is, so I guess in that sense it makes sense.

Lebron maybe a great sport man, but if you ask outside US I bet most people would rather have MJ... my brothers would kill for MJ merchandise, while neither of them or my dad and coworkers care much about NBA and Lebron right now

Jordan was the most popular in 90's in Japan for his success and the shoes, so I guess little Yuzuru was watching him on TV :) (Basketball is not a big sport here in general.)
