Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

I've never been a huge fan of their exhibition programs but this one looks absolutely STUNNING. Can't wait to see the whole thing.

I've found their exhibition programs to be oddly tame as well. I'm not a fan of figure skating exhibition programs in general. Not since Michelle Kwan's FoG has an Ex program truly grabbed my attention. (Maybe Fernandez's Danny Boy was an exception.)

Gabby and Guillaume's EX programs, to me, tend to feel like an unfinished thought, especially compared to their competition programs. It's like they never go full out in any direction and end up saying nothing in particular.

I'm definitely hoping someone puts up a fancam on YouTube. It looks great.

Speaking of great, Gabi and Guillaume have been announced as part of the cast of Yuna Kim's 'All That Skate' in Seoul on May 20-22! http://sports.naver.com/general/news/read.nhn?oid=447&aid=0000133582 (the news article is in Korean, you'll need to translate or let your browser attempt it). I can't wait to see what they do there.

I made the mistake of looking into the FD WC thread and oh boy... it does take a toll after a while. Seems this is the place I'm only going to get info now, a shame since I like plenty other teams too.
Sorry to derail, just a little bummer.

And yeah ditto about the exhibition programs, never enjoyed any so I'm glad they're polishing that.

Last week, Guillaume was interviewed by sport newspaper l'Equipe. It's about what he watches on TV, not skating. Here is the translation:

- How long do you spend watching TV ?
GC : I don't have a TV ! Does Netflix count ? It depends, some days I don't watch anything at all. Sometimes I watch it for 3 hours. Let's say I spend an average of 1 hour [watching]. I got a subscription to Netflix when we came to Canada in 2014 because I found myself without a TV.

- Your best memory on a TV set ?
- Let's say Daily Sport on Infosport because we did it with Vanessa [James] and Morgan [Ciprès], who won the pairs' bronze medal in Milano one week ago. We loved doing this, all the four of us.

- You favorite show ?
- "Le Coeur a ses raisons" [Sins of Love in English], a canadian TV series that has been making us laugh for years, Gabriella and I. You can find it on YouTube. Why ? Because it's fun.

- The movie that is aired 512 times but that you'll watch again ?
- It's not on TV but I'll say The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I like this movie and every time I take a flight, it's on the movies list, so I watch it again.

- Your favorite series character ?
- I'd say Gaby from Desperate Housewives. Because she is really funny, sassy (he says sassy in English, which is translated by "insolent" = cheeky, disrespectful]. She makes me laugh, I like her.

- The show you would like to be in ?
- Not something like Koh Lanta [one of the French versions of Survivor]. I'd say Dance wit the Stars. Speaking of it, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who were [ice] dance Olympic champions in 2014, were in DWTS in the US, but as opponents.

- Your [fave] cartoon ?
- I'm ashamed... But I adore Totally Spies. And I remember I used to watch "Debout les Zouzous" (I have no idea what it is :D, but it can be translated by Wake up Kiddos), with lots of cartoons in a row and I liked "Martin Matin".

- The foreign show you'd like to see adapted in France ?
- Dancing on Ice ! It's the ice skating version of DWTS. We were part of the British version a few weeks ago because Christopher Dean (the 1984 Olympic champion who choreographed their short dance) was in the jury and we were impressed by the level of [skating] of celebrities who were in that show.

- The show you are ashamed to watch ?
- I watch Australian plastic surgery shows on Netflix. They have this show where gals are about to get married. They all want a new face for their wedding day but it's never ready for D Day. It's funny...

LOL. They watch a lot of 'trash' TV shows. :-)

I briefly translated the article! A lot of it is just technical details but here are the main points :)

Gold ice dance medalists at the Pyeongchang Olympics Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and World Champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron will appear side by side at the 'SK Telecom All That Skate 2018' ice show, where figure-skating queen Yuna Kim will make a special appearance. The sponsor of the 'All That Skate' ice show, All That Sports will hold the 'SK Telecom All That Skate 2018' ice show from May 20 to May 22 in Mokdong Ice Rink over three days, and the list of skaters was released on 3 April. This includes Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir from Canada, the ice dance gold medalists, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron from France, the ice dance silver medalists, and ladies' world champion Katelyn Osmond from Canada. Other invited skaters from overseas are the artistic 'King of spins', Stephane Lambiel, 3-time world champion Patrick Chan, the expressive Jeffrey Buttle and Olympic pairs bronze medalists Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford.

This is also the first time Yuna Kim is stepping back onto the ice for an ice show after her last show that was All That Skate 2014, after which she retired from competitive figure skating. She is making a special appearance for this ice show as a way to express her gratitude towards winter sports fans who have supported the Olympics.

Korean skaters Choi Dabin, Lee Junhyung, Park Soyeon, as well as Lim Eunsoo, You Young, Kim Yerim, who are skaters to watch for at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, will also be performing gala programs during the ice show. The choreography involved in the ice show will be made by renowned choreographer David Wilson, who is famous for having choreographed for Yuna Kim in the past. He was in charge of the choreography for All That Skate 2014 as well, and will once again return to Korea for the first time in 4 years to choreograph the opening and finale group skates.

Hope this helps!

Thanks liapacco, that's a great translation! Google translate had a lot of trouble with the names...

I hope some of the programs get put up on YouTube - if Gabi and Guillaume do their revamped To Build A Home we might get to see all of it then!

Thank you maya1985! I really love the genuine tenderness and loyalty they have nurtured over the years. It is quite the achievement! By all affection you may have for a close friend, spending that much time together has to be daunting! I cannot understand when people don't see the magic they create TOGETHER. No Guillaume without Gaby and vice versa! I am very grateful to them for all the wonderful moments they give us! I wish them the very best for the coming years! I am ready to be blown away ...

Full translation for this one, a very beautiful explanation of their relationship. I love how much they clearly depend on each other without ever becoming co-dependent. It's a very special friendship.

They grew up together in Clermont-Ferrand. Friends before they were even partnered on the ice, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron know each other "by heart and since forever" (Gabby says with a smile). "He was even invited to my 8th birthday!"

The pair work together brilliantly. So brilliantly that their partnership has brought them three world titles and four European titles. In February, the two also became Olympic silver medallists. "Naturally, many of our memories are linked to our sport", says Guillaume. "We've skated together every day since we were nine, sometimes up to six hours a day", Gabriella adds. "And when we are touring, like now, we are together all day long!"

This daily companionship explains their great sense of intimacy, which is obvious even through the screen. "A great part of what the audience sees is real. But we also work a lot on our attitudes. In our choreos, we approach it playfully. In competition, we play it up a lot." What about the first time they skated together? "Damn, I can't remember, it was so long ago!", admits Gabby. "I have some images in my head but the whole thing is still very blurry", reveals Guillaume. "I can still picture our first training sessions, when we were learning the basics..? It's funny, because you usually remember the first times!"

Their first shared memory on the ice is the French National championships. "In Bordeaux", recalls Cizeron. "We were so young..." "We won, even though we weren't expecting it", adds Gabby. Since then, the couple has gained a lot more notoriety. The two have become the French stars of figure skating. "We are coping well with this mediatisation," she admits. "It came fairly slowly. We live in Montreal, we are far removed from all of it. And when we come to France, it's nice to know we are supported."
Like any couple, they have known both ups and downs. "Of course, there is tension," Gabby confides. "There were times when one of us had grown up faster than the other, times when one of us was dealing with private problems, or even injuries."

"Our complicity was built when we were kids," adds Guillaume. "Then, during adolescence, it really took work to keep it that way. But we have a lot of respect for each other, we have each promised to make it work." The pair is of same mind on this point: "This relationship is necessary in my life", Gabby says, smiling. "It's very rewarding, it influenced my personality."
Their secret? "We are supportive of each other in every way", Guillaume explains. "We always someone to rely on. It's become an essential support. And we each have our own private lives, which allows us to maintain a balance." Would they consider skating alone? "Never! This is an adventure that we share." For Gabby, "it's the evolution of our shared history together that makes it special. We lived through some very powerful stuff together, some incredible success in our sport for sure. But it's the obstacles that we cleared together that makes our relationship beautiful."
