I don't see why i should respect someone more because she loves her sport. I would be surprised if most of skaters want to stagnate and not improve, high scores or no.

You've been saying the most passive aggressive things thoughout this thread without coming out as a full blown hater. Interesting 👏

I think you should respect Medvedeva because she obviously sees her flaws and wants to improve her flaws. She can honestly leave this sport and make millions in entertainment. But she didn't. She's staying despite the issue of Russian figureskating longevity, breaks up with her childhood coach because she refuses to retire, faces the aggression of nationalistic fans and took the high road when said coach took blows.

Honestly, this whole situation made me start liking Medvedeva. I can call myself a fan now. I guess. She earned my respect but it's cool if she doesn't have yours. 👌

Oh God, you are so wrong, many fans support Zhenya as well as many former and current figure skaters and champions and coaches say she has made a smart move. Those who are whining are in minority.

I agree. I saw posts on Twitter and Tumblr from people who admit they are not Evgenia's fan but who praise her decision of finally thinking about her own well-being

If Medvedeva can win next years GPF everything should be fine for her as it’s pre nats so will show status quo without national bias. However if Zhenya looses to Zagi or anyone else then that could be devastating.

I'm thinking the same.

I mean, I respect her for wanting to improve her skating, I even opened a thread to express my admiration of BOrser's method. But, the RusFed wants to see results; right now I think Alina and Evgenia have about the same weight in their eyes. Sure, Alina is OGM, but Evgenia hasn't bombed anything major or at all. I have a feeling the fed is just going to watch things play out. And if Evgenia doesn't win GPF (and Alina wins) RusNats is going to be messy :slink:

I mean, it's kind of both, isn't it? The actual Russian figure skating community is supportive, I haven't seen a single interview where anyone spoke out against Zhenya's decision (not counting Eteri, of course). But the broader news are really pushing this horrible nationalistic angle and there're a lot of really ugly comments in the comment sections of those.

It's really Yagudin vs Plushenko 2.0 ;) Drama, controversy, sudden coaching change. I hope NBC makes a fluff piece as epic as the one for Yagudin and Plushy.

The only thing that I am wondering is if becoming a better skater is enough for her to win the OGM, which is clearly still her goal, as indicated in the icenetwork article. Everything worked out for Yagudin but he had TAT on his side, who was a very effective power broker at the time. Sure, Orser is renowned and respected but no one really beats the Russians when it comes to politicking and unfortunately Olympics results are often too much influenced by factors outside of skating as we have seen so many times in the past.

Thanks. I'm a hater because i didn't praise her wish to improve. Thanks. It's funny this thing that have some fans to call haters those who don't praise their favorites.
I assume that i'm a fan-hater for Wakaba since she's my favorite but i don't praise her for everything and always call her flaws.

Keep in mind that it's going to be a long season for Med.

It will be interesting to see the approach Orser takes with her. He did say she shouldn't keep world titles in mind, but he does know these politics. So how will he correct her technique? If she becomes TOO inconsistent, then...

While I could see leaving home, being in an unfamiliar country, no longer surrounded by friends and family as challenging. It may actually be beneficial. Alina’s move worked for her. It may help Medvedeva to concentrate on her training without distraction and also be away from public scrutiny. She does seem to do well when she’s in her “bubble.”

As would expect from people on the Internet.

Evgenia is taking a chance, probably she made the decision knowing what would it happen, she will win some fans, she will lose some fans.

I gotta say, I lost a lot of respect for Eteri when she showed that message

So lame...

"Surprising" move was from Evgenia's side, "Whine" after games, and ask..."why you didn't keep Alina in juniors for one more year" Mb it was emotions...or smth. And i really understand Eteri, why she revealed everything...So, time will show who was right and will put everything in its place

I didn't want to comment on rumors, but once it is official...I think we'll just have to wait and see. As for now I think it is a good move. The one thing that will be tricky is how the federation is going (or not?) support her. From what I understand, they don't support skaters that much if they want to train abroad. Having TAT on your side is a good thing in this situation. Anyway, it's kind of sad Evgenia is leaving Eteri and her team after all these years together, but for her it might really be for the best. The competition on that rink is super crazy. There are girls who do crazy things and every year someone new comes. Maybe it was enough for Zhenya. We don't know all the reasons and we never will, so stop blaiming everybody and stop being nasty. Zhenya was for sure really disappointed she lost the gold, but also...I don't think Eteri would be favouring Alina over Evgenia at all, actually we could see at the Olympics and also Europeans, Eteri was not so happy that Evgenia didn't win.
With all respect I have for both, Evgenia and Eteri (one of the best skaters in the world and, even with all the rumors, one of the best coaches), I also have to say other thing. What I don't like, and it had happened in the past already, is all the bad things coaches and athletes say after they split with each other. I remember when Julia was still with Eteri everything was perfect, they loved each other etc etc. Once Julia left, it was all about how lazy she was, how hard it was to work with her, then Julia started saying how she didn't get support from Eteri...And now again, which is really sad. If it is true about Evgenia not answering to calls and messages, then it is not nice, of course. But why do they have to go with it into media? Couldn't this be dealt better way?

No you're a hater because you continuously bash this skater and refuse to listen or reply to counter arguments. You rightly call her out on her flaws but state that you see no hope in her skating with such passive aggressiveness. Even non-fans of Medvedeva respect and support her decision. As this is a thread to discuss the potential of Evgenia and Borser caching relationship, let's keep things positive and leave the hate to nationalistic Russian fans.

I believe Evgenia wanted to settle this nicely once she comes back, but Eteri blew it up on national tv before she had a chance. From Orser's interview it seems that Evgenia refused to bad mouth her coach even in private, so I'd say that Evgenia is trying to split amicably but things didn't go her way. The main reason for her switch seems to be that she wants more ownership in her programmes, and Eteri's camp is limiting her growth for fear of her losing her consistency. If RusFed is smart (and they aren't always - see: Konstantinova), they will politick equally for Evgenia and Alina at least for the duration of next season, until Eteri's best juniors move up.

Evgenia is the one who stood up for Russia during the doping scandal and was the public face of clean sport in Russia. Alina won OGM, but Alina bombed Worlds. She's not 100% reliable, and no matter how much Eteri pushes Alina, RusFed can't dump Evgenia next season. They need more than one girl who can win. No matter how sure of a "sure thing" someone is to win an event, they could mess up, and then you end up with a Kaetlyn Osmond world champion, which is RusFed's worst nightmare.

(And this is NOT a knock against Kaetlyn! Only that, well, I'm sure RusFed HATES that she won instead of a Russian lady.)

Even if Russia did try to dump Evgenia, international judges have opinions, too, and Orser has a lot of friends in a lot of federations. There's a benefit to having a coach who coaches students from all over the world.
