I don't think he discovers talent so much as talent comes knocking on his door.

Either way, he could say no, and send them to their coaches. And yet in the last three Olympics (Yuna 2010, Yuzuru 2014 and Yuzuru/ Javier in 2018), he always has won a medal, he and Marina Zueva (Virtue/ Moir and Davis/ White in 2010; Virtue/ Moir and Davis/ White 2014; Shib Sib 2018) have achieve this.

Omg I didn’t know it was possible to be so excited for an upcoming season that doesn’t have the Olympics in it but I literally cannot wait for next season [emoji33] part of me is sad to see Zhenya leave Tutberidze team but I’m excited for her new chapter

On one hand... On the other, it prevents cases like Radionova's Titanic program. I believe it's that way with Buianova as well. Judging by Sotskova's interviews, at least.

And yet we got Alexandra Trusova skating to Big Spender

Has anyone noticed this?

From the IceNetwork article: 'Orser met with Medvedeva, 18, and her mother, Zhanna Devyatova, on Sunday, April 22, at the Mayfield Hotel in Seoul'.

This was the exact date she deleted most of her pictures with Yuzuru from her Instagram.

Shooketh

As a friend of mine pointed out today, as we are just saluting, Evgenia Medvedeva, for leaving Russia's top coach to come to...Canada, the country so much maligned the last quad, for its ladies' skaters on this board. My oh my, how life can come full circle with a 2 time World Champion coming to learn a new style/technique.

Hard work, great coaching, mental and physical fitness, good nutrient and a whole lot of fun, can bring one far in the sport. As a national cold medicine company says in their slogan here, ''Buckley's Mixture, it tastes awful, and it works!.''

Would be interesting if Eteri in her internal drama, has some light moment and decide to drastically change her methods for one season. Letting her pupils choose their music, have word on choregraphy, eat, etc. And see the result at the end of season.
Would be a great science project, named "Eteri the evil coach VS Eteri the cool coach:biggrin:

Sidestep: I think changing coaches can be good for some, less so for others. Some stay with the same one for ever, and they thrive - sometimes with ups and downs on the skating scene, but always with trust in their coaches. One thing I noticed about 'stayers' until long into adulthood is that these coaches gave their charges room to breathe, let them be who they wished to be quite apart from getting results. Think Phillips Candeloro, a strong personalty if ever there was one, headstrong and all those things. To stick with Russians, Irina Slutskaya is another one who I believe had the same coach throughout her career. But even with trust, freedom to breathe, etc., one still might wish for a change. I thought coaches would be aware of that. You don't choose your family, but you can choose (if they'll have you) your coach. I know I'm not mentioning any politicking (can limit your options), but to me if an adult woman, albeit a young One, wants a change for whatever reason, why all the fuss? I'm just happy for Evghenia, that's she's got support from her parents for this decision (she still is a very young adult), and I hope it works out for her. Kudos to Evgenia. I think she needs room to breathe. May she thrive as a person, and if she gets successes on the way: just Yay! But there's no shame in missing a podium once in a while either.

I was just thinking about this...and thinking that it probably says something that the most respected/celebrated program from one of Eteri's skaters was one the athlete themselves insisted on.

Haha lol. I was trying to stick up for Eteri a little bit and looks like I opened the door for a burn 🔥

I think that's a general feature of transitioning from junior to senior level, in that early on the coaches are obviously going to be picking what sorts of things their charges do (albeit, it's never a good idea to saddle them with something they aren't interested in), but by the time you're entering senior competition, the skaters really should start to get some say in what they do. Eteri is on the extreme end in that she dictates everything.

To be honest, if a skater shares a coach with a strong rival, I always expect one or the other to eventually change coaches. I am only surprised that she chose to go to Orser because it's rare for a Russian skater to move to NA for training. But I am not that surprised that she left Eteri. Similarly, I felt someone in Hamada's camp would switch coaches as well, and was proven correct with Marin's announcement earlier. It's rare to see rival skaters sharing the same coach for long. I can't imagine the amount of internal pressure and competition these skaters must face on a daily basis. I think it helped that Hanyu and Javi; Davis and White & Virtue & Moir did not skate for the same country, and thus avoided the awkwardness at nationals. This is not the case for Russian and Japanese skaters who need to win over their teammates first at Nationals to ensure a spot at Olympics and Worlds team.

It is far more surprising when a skater-coach relationship falls apart unexpectedly when everything appeared to be going well and there were no other existing competitor in the same training camp (e.g. Kwan-Caroll, Kim-Orser).

It's great program. I sincerely think it's the best program I've seen this season.

You can’t be serious? Why anyone would pick that music for a 13 year old is beyond my comprehension? ( honestly, even for an adult) and additionally her programs are jump and element drills. Beautiful jumps but performance wise?????

Now, Alena K.’s program was a real gem. Never liked that team’s choreography that much before but that program won Alena fans everywhere in the world.

I know, late, but Brian doesn't pick the skaters based on who can afford him, so...he always said he needs to find something unique in them, maybe he found it in Evgenia, maybe thats why he pick Javier, Junhwan, etc...not just because of the money.

I didn't know she didn't create her programs, no wonder why I never like her competitive programs (just Anna Karenina, and she had to convince them to use it) and the EX ones.

I found it weird, how some of her so called "fans" are trashing her and the so called "haters" are supporting her and defending her lol what a crazy off-season

I remember her crediting Yulia in an early interview but after she had left room the entire credit for the program and how ungrateful Yulia was. I also feel like most of zhenya’s programs were about recreating that type of success by pushing really dark topics (e.g., 9-11, clinical death) but they always came off as...extra.
