Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

Amidst overall excitement on "new life and new Medvedeva with Orser" I wonder what he really has to offer to her except the "luxury of voice". And what happens if he fails to take her to the olympic gold, would there be another ghosted coach?

With two of his other prominent students Orser always used to emphasize how full package and impeccable quality of elements(GOE) are the key to success. But Evgenia already is full package at least in protocols if not in reality, Orser would have to do what she had not done with previous team - add difficulty, either backloading or learning new combo like 3Lz-3Lo and jumps like 4S or 3A. And while first and even combo is possible, the latter is highly doubtful and would certainly take more time. So I assume his plan is to make some overall polish with backloading and hoping main future rivals won't keep their jumps and/or consistency by olympics.

That's why realistically I don't have big expectations, as Orser has told himself before, it takes time to see results, there probably would be better programs, but if her technical level stay put, the disappointment is inevitable.

I think it's a big risk. I liked what Brian told her - yes OGM is her main goal, but she doesn't have to win all the competitions in between. I take that as his warning that it will be a huge work in progress for her, and that she's now allowed to take her time to find out what kind of skater she wants to be. I'm sure she knows this if she chose him, he never denied that his method takes quite a long time to give fruits.

Can someone clarify? It appears he means that Evgenia wasn't famous enough to be recognized on the streets/trains in 2015 - what does he mean that Evgenia's words "And I think you expected? (???) really represent her?

"So I tell Zhenya that I didn't expect such results. She answered 'And you think I did?' (note: informal you, said very casually). These words sum up Medvedeva's essence"

This is about her winning Worlds during her first season in seniors. He's just highlighting both how surprising her success was for her and how open and easygoing she's always been.

A question:

I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered upthread, but do skaters normally choose their own spin positions? In my mind I can't imagine the coach wouldn't choose these, knowing the point system and all. And what makes them any different from the jumps--the coach chooses the jumps, right?

Thank you in advance. This is very curious to me.

No! It’s dictated by rules! Spins aren’t creative or like improvised

Is this a metaphor or did a black cat really walk between them???

Black cat is a metaphor. Yes, you're right.

I read this in translation - very interesting perspective from a journalist (?) who seems to know Evgenia and Eteri pretty well. Some parts don't really make any sense, so it would be nice to see a better translation.

Of interest:

It's clear that Evgenia said the wrong thing in a moment of emotion. This guy seems to think that Eteri was really rooting for Evgenia and Alina equally, I think? I imagine she was trying to be professional but was biased toward Evgenia at the time though.

A little hard to parse, but really makes sense. Eteri doesn't have to worry about Evgenia anymore while she takes care of her other athletes.

Another source saying that Evgenia pretty much lacks in natural talent but she works her butt off.

It may have been Alinas black cat that walked between Eteri and Zhenya! :eeking:

there's been lots of disgusting things said on this forum and, well, all i can say is my relationship with the 'report' button has become much more intimate ;)

But at the same time... several friends of mine living in Russia have jumped in and told me something like...

Friend 1: "I read that Med sent text to Eteri telling her to keep Alina in junior?"
Friend 2: "Oh it turned out 01 year before Olympic, Med asked Eteri to keep alina in junior?"

Me: "Where the hell that kind of information was from?"

I wonder what kind of twisted news the media has done and how much on Med's reputation has suffered?

Now NBC, Daily Failed and Japanese news kinda reported the same on Med.

Eteri has done enough damage. People might be thinking: "This girl is vile!"

While in reality it's her coach who is vile. Well done, Eteri!

 I have to say Eteri got what she aimed for, however I truly believe that life is: https://goo.gl/images/YxCkod

Eteri's comment really did its job, considering how much game of telephone it's gone through in forums and even foreign media, to the point it's now become 'Zhenya demanded and tried to keep Alina from competing in seniors this season' instead of a private, in the moment outburst from a heartbroken girl after her Olympic free skate and losing the gold medal.

Eteri knew exactly what she was doing. Cold, calculating, and so mean. She wants anyone who dares to try and walk away to be done. She's succeeded so far, hopefully Evgenia and Polina will change that. *fingers crossed*

That was filmed in March (don't remember exact date). Orser said she contacted him in April, 2. So it takes only few weeks for her to go from "i stay here without any doubt" to "i leave"

Why not? Do you always assume the worst of someone? One month is enough thinking not to mention there are so many factors deciding her move. Just admit that you dislike her, otherwise you won't assume the worst of someone. Or maybe you're just this kind of negative person. And excuse me, but she's 18, while the other one is 40ish and notorious for bashing skaters who wanna leave her. I wouldn't want to face that kind of useless conversation with someone who's so freaking authoritive.

Wow. I left the forum for a couple of months, and it looks like I missed out on alot of sweet, sweet drama lol...

Even as a Yulia fan, I’ve always been a staunch Eteri defender, mostly because I don’t believe in rumors and I respect the results she achieves with her students. However, her going out and bashing Zhenya in the media like this is both disappointing and horrifying. I’ve lost a lot of respect for this woman, and can finally see her true nature. Not to gloat, but I kind of predicted this would happen two years ago lol.

Quote from Averbukh:

I don’t like Orser’s comments, who starts to give comments using a political background. That poor Zhenya did not have the right to vote, that she was so unhappy following only the directions of the coach. I have been the choreographer of Medvedeva’s programs for four years, so I’ll see what he will do as a choreographer. Zhenya was always engaged in choreographing, her opinion always influenced the program. If Orser wants to raise the topic once again, that the Russians are robots and they in Canada are so free, then I would answer him like this. You need to start your work with a respectful statement about Zhenya’s previous coach and all the choreographers with whom she worked. Because they have a long long way to grow to the level of Medvedeva’s programs.

So where and when did Orser say "Russians are robots and Canada is free"? Did he really say that?

This coming from the guy who thought Brian Orser is a choreographer?

Orser never said that. Averbukh is just being salty and exaggerating. Trying to save face etc

God, Averbukh is such a bitter loser meanie. (What I actually want to call him would get my post deleted.)

All I can do :rolleye::rolleye::rolleye:

She [Evgenia] told me [BOrser] it was, 'This is what you're skating to. This is the order of your spins, these are your spin positions

Apparently Averbukh is accusing Evgenia of lying to Brian and also just making up insults that Brian didn't say. People harp on how rude Eteri is, but Averbukh is so much worse. I remember when he basically called Yulia fat because she chose not to use a program he choreographed for her (and the program then went to Evgenia). Have fun choreographing for Alina, if Daniil will let you.

Well maybe disappointment to "fans" as they want the infallible Medvedeva who never chokes. Now it seems people are interested in identifying who is the next phenom in order to have a "I told you so" moment so I'm really not interested in the market speculators.

I think Evgenia and Brian know the risk and whether there is an OGM for her again, the biggest disappointment she can experience is not trying her utmost best to make it happen on her own terms. I was never a fan of her style and personally believe she's one of the catalysts that has shifted what I want ladies figure skating to be, but I respect her efforts.

She didn’t have to go to an advocate of banning the Russian system From seniors!

You are right! Isu and oser can’t ban the Russian system. They are working to ban it from seniors.

??? if they raise the minimum age, Russia can still participate as seniors, unless their only strategy its grabbing young girls to compete with the old ones (and because they have more stamina...) which I doubt, I'm pretty sure IF that happen, is going to be a good change, for both juniors and seniors, that way they* could have a long career, and they could get a healthier life, win-win situation
