I just don't get people who are bashing Medvedeva. I don't even like her skating. Weren't y'all fans a month ago?

Let me ask this: TAT and Trankov support Med. Do you now hate them, too? They're supporting her move to the "anti under-18 coach" after all. They also don't seem to care that Med "ghosted" Tut, so are they bad because of that, too?

Some Fans here are fickle, if their opinions have changed that much due to a simple coaching change. Perhaps they were never TRUE Fans to begin with. Sad. :palmf:

Imagine if Orser were American.

I don't think they would have mind as much. America+Russia have so much love affairs these days lol... Putin is practically a bro. Besides, many Russians coaches already do really well in US, Eteri was even there for a short time. But Canada... oh boy... there's history there.

More so than the badmouthing, which in of itself is bad enough already, it's disgusting for a coach to go on national TV and tell everyone about something her student (supposedly) said in a emotionally vulnerable and frustrated moment (assuming Eteri isn't making up #fakenews, which I wouldn't put past her). That's a huge betrayal of trust and a terrible thing to do to someone.

Imagine if your ex went on social media after your breakup and blabbed about the fights the two of you had, and the things you said to him/her when you were mad. I don't care how terrible of a bf/gf you might've been, that's not okay. In this situation, it's even more screwed up given the asymmetrical power balance due to their age difference and coach-student dynamic.

And before all the misguided Eteri supporters come in here proclaiming "but Eteri said she was ghosted!", that still doesn't justify what she did. Two wrongs don't make a right, and Eteri, an adult, should know that.

The fact that Eteri is willing to use someone's most emotional moments against them as ammunition in the court of public etiquette signals she's lacking in basic human etiquette.

Well...we all knew she is a Diva already, and likely a cold calculated bossy lady. That is what makes her a killer coach in this grilling sport that get results.

Do people honestly expect she is really some sort of saint? Some sort of nice Mary Poppins who want nothing but goodness for the 'children'?!!

It is like watching Bonfire of the Vanities... she is clearly unleashing her worst fears, traits as the woman feel wronged, disrespected and betrayed. ie/going through all stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Revenge, Vendetta, Rewrite herstory that leads Madness... and eventually suffering! (to quote Yoda). A little too emotionally involved for a supposedly cold calculated lady - don't you think?

She will surely wake up with a horrible hangover soon feeling terrible ... but not while Russia media is clearly out for blood and looking to throw a bash circus party to sensationalise something that is really much ado about nothing. Skater move to new coach to grow, made the best decision for her. The End.

well, in the words of Rafael Arutyunyan "If you don't like it, go and watch junior skating.
"You have a choice: Go to watch jumping or go to watch ladies skate. It's not fair to a lady that the small kid with a boy's body competes against her."

And it can be, it happened, Osmond is very healthy, and its reaching her potential, the only country with this problem is russia, and we all know what happen with their girls after a while, Evgenia was smart to move on they way she did.

Is not about regression, its about fairness, its like people say,if you are the best at 15, you should still be good at 18, if not, then, I guess it wasn't true.

I feel bad for Evgenia's mother if she can't move with her to Canada. She rarely saw her daughter as is.

^^ Agree with OS, that Canada is viewed as more an adversary at the moment given their successes this season, including Team Olympic Gold, winning medals in 4 of 5 cats. at the Olympics, then 2 of 4 cats. at Worlds. Move over hockey rivalries, as current Canadian skating podium results are considered an affront, to some.

The proposal to raise the minimum age is considering 16, not 18. I guess it wouldn't be a gmyers post without some doomsday anti-Russian conspiracy busting. Do you think Alina won't be able to do her lutz-loop next season when she is 16? All athletes are essentially racing against the clock, but the clock hasn't even started ticking for some of the junior girls. How different would last season have gone if Alina had had her sudden growth spurt a month before the Olympics instead of a month before worlds?

Also, it's just disheartening to see comments like this. Just a few month ago Zhenya stood before the IOC executive board and pleaded her country's case with poise and graciousness. Perhaps, without her intervention, there would have been no OAR delegation at all at the Games. I guess that all means nothing if you dare to quietly leave a coach that clearly doesn't have any long term plans for your career. I'd like to see the "traitor! traitor!" pitchforks continue when she starts winning again next season.

That's just a 1 year increase, I don't really see the difference, esp from the argument of girls body vs. women's body. Some girls can go through puberty at 15, others 16, 17, etc. If you want to have only post-puberty bodies in senior ladies, to be fair to everyone you would have to increase age to 18. And if you're talking about longevity, where the issues are with the Russians, increasing by 1 year won't help any of their longevity, just look at the past and push them back one year. They would all still be where they are, missing the titles from their first senior year. Doesn't make any of their careers longer. And they would still rank the same within Russia, same girls sent to world's, just 1 year later. And I don't understand why people say she went through puberty before world's; she had her growth spurt before Olympics. Her body at Olympics and World's are the same, the major developments were before, between last year and this year. She didn't bomb because of that, she did because she fell and lost control of her program, as many skaters do on an off day. Raising the minimum age wouldn't have helped her there..

I *think* (without using the magic of Google) that they are characters from the Threepenny Opera, on which Mack the Knife is based.

ETA: Using the power of the Google, I had no idea that the Threepenny Opera was based on a 16th C English work, the Beggar’s Opera? And Sukey Tawdry and Jenny Diver were common to both? What did I do without the Internetz?

And jumping off, not directed at you, @Mathman, a 13 year old skating to a Big Spender cannot be justified no matter how many “creepy songs” are out there. Sorry, doesn’t work:disapp:
I wouldn’t have picked big spender for a preteen. But I’m not sure it’s necessarily different than the little kids who sing despacito not realizing what the words from another language actually mean. People get on them for picking warhorses but seems like they really can’t win as so many songs are suggestive in some way.

Sorry...end of my tangent.

This is cool. Let's hope she also enlists David Wilson or Lori Nichole to do her choreography!

They love Medvedeva! They oppose all zagitova success at the expense of Medvedeva. They don’t like eteri anymore. They only want Medvedeva to be successful.

I really think that raising spots for top country from 3 to 4 will keep the sport more competitive and alive than raising the minimum age for senior entry

But we all know what country would benefit from this so it wont happen.

Because the bashing is baseless.

you forgot my whole post----

What's with the "why are her fans jumping ship and bashing her now?" comments.

Granted, I haven't analyzed EVERY post in this thread, but if I were to "spitball" a guess - I'd say that 95% of the posts have sided with Evgenia.

And the 5% that don't probably weren't her fans anyways.

Seems like much ado about nothing.

Of course bashing Evgenia is baseless that's not the point.

But you and someone else were inferring that her fans were doing it ---> "weren't y'all fans about a month ago?"

Clearly the bashing is not coming from her fans.

My final thoughts on the situation.

It looks like the dust has started to fall, nevertheless this is exactly the kind of off-season drama that the FS community asked for :laugh2:. I'm not going to dive into what Eteri/Medvedeva/Orser/other people said on this topic because I think it has been discussed and debated in depth on this forum and I have nothing to add.

I'm happy (and surprised) Evgenia made the switch. Not only for a coach that she considers better fitting to her situation, but also because she gets to get away from a pressure cooker environment and the need to share the ice with national rivals. Oh yeah, I'm also excited for different choreography. I would expect an adaptation period to the new environment, coaching and just the fact that she's living "permanently" for the first time in a foreign country, and the results of all of that possibly showing on the ice.

The thing I find really upsetting about the whole drama is people - whether from this forum, the media, and prominent personalities in the figure skating community - dragging in other people irrelevant to the situation such as Alina and Yuna (to name a few) and feeling the need to villify, badmouth and insult.

:luv17: Good luck to Evgenia. Good luck to Orser. And please, try to be respectful to each other.:peace:

I think they were. I've seen a few praise her before, I think. But my post was more about the bashing, because it just seemed weird and baseless.

But we all know what country would benefit from this so it wont happen.

Actually, this year it would have been Japan. The Russians barely kept their 3 spots. ( this is why the Russian federation needs Medvedeva—- wouldn’t have happened with her there) I love the Japanese girls and would love to see 4 of them but I am sure Russian fans would not be thrilled 😬 In fact, Russia was third after Japan and Canada this year in rankings at WC. And even worse, the previous year it would have been Canada who got four spots. No offense to Austman and Chartrand but I don’t think they are top skaters right now.

Im not expecting the rule to be passed but it would be nice. Whatever country benfits so be it. Im thinking of the next olympics when Russia will have Alina Zhenya Masha Sasha Alena and Anna to name 6 for only 3 spots. Who knows what other Russian girls are going to be good then. I would like to see Alina and Zhenya make another olympic team but it will be hard to do.

Is "not liking Eteri" a real shock given her behaviour?
no and in fact the situation has turned so much many would prefer eteri to stop coaching and if she doesnt want all her students to fail even if it means russian ladies boom is over

Do you expect people to keep supporting someone who behaves like Eteri to keep working with children? If the "boom" is over, maybe the person to replace Eteri will be less awful. It's not like there aren't other schools in Russia, anyway. Stop thinking of the "boom", and think about the people who have to work with her, maybe you'll understand where these "haters" are coming from.
