How does sponsor funding work? I assume ANA cover his air transportation or at least give discounts(?) how about coaches and other training fees? Do sponsors cover that as well? Since Brian alone already charges over a $100 per hour I would imagine the cost for training per day can add up considerably.
How about Edea and John Wilson, do they sponsor him for their equipments as well? I recall seeing #sponsor tag under JW’s post on Shoma’s new blades so I assume they probably sponsor other top skaters as well?

They are all covered by ANA
And I've heard that as long as Yuzuru is an amateur athlete, JSF takes 50% of the earnings from his CMs (and it is the same for other skaters I guess). But it is a story spreaded for a long time taken from the tabloids, so no one knows precisely how it works.
BTW we have not received the result of the lottery of the talk shows by P&G yet, only 10 days before FaOI so we have to know the date to make travel plans

Aye, that was my first idea, too. With the 4Lo in the bag there's no problem to get the six-type-bonus. Yuzu can even chose between the 3Lz and 4Lz. Makes no difference regarding the bonus (only in BV). #LongLiveThe3F
There are multiple options for the combos, too. He can exchange 4S, 4T and 3A as he likes.

About JSF I think Yuzuru receive some funding doesn’t he? That’s the idea of being in that team list, no?

Very insightful article. Thanks for posting! And it still didn’t cover everything like the additional costs incurred if a skater picks up and moves to the other side of the world to train ala Yuzuru, Javier and others. There would be the ongoing costs for renting an apartment or house, buying groceries, paying for utilities, funding transportation whether public or private etc., This can add up very quickly too into several thousands of dollars a year.
Even with the assistance from the skating federations, figure skating requires participants to already be doing well financially to start in the sport.

Indeed! In the US musicians new to the industry are hit with these type of fees. They’ll be bringing in millions but their label will be taking most of it due to what they’ve invested in the artist ie studio time, promotion, producers/writers of their music etc. Perhaps the JSF has a similar mind set, that they’ve invested money in their skaters, paying for training etc., that a ROI is not just the skater becoming a world or Olympic champion but providing them with a monetary profit.

Thank you for the link! I’m glad that Yuzu has all the support and sponsorship that he has. The article makes me feel bad for skaters who are good enough to be in higher lever of competitions (which would end up costing more) but doesn’t do well enough to actually get all those price money and sponsorship deals
Oh right JSF, I wonder which part of the expenses the cover. The article talks about usfs and how skaters can reimburse some expenses, so that’s one way they can provide support or maybe the skaters get paid annual salary?
What else does being on that list entail? Does it also determine a skater’s likelihood of being picked as the host pick for NHK?

Anyone have an idea when we might hear about his new programs? As someone who rather adores his "I will wear as many sparkles as I like critics be damned" style, I really want to see the new costumes badly...

It depends, usually he debuts one of his programs , at least ex at ice shows and another one is revealed for media day which is usually hold in Toronto in August. In 2016 it was hold in early September. My guess is he will reveal something at faoi, could be ex or one of the programs and one will be kept till august/ September

I've heard JSF pays monthly for the skaters on the list, about 2,500,000 yen in total a year for the top group, so I can say it is not a lot (better than nothing though). Therefore, I think its main merit is that the skaters are likely to be chosen for international competitions.

I was watching GPF 2013 last night and thought again it was great win by Yuzuru overall, age 19 (barely), 3 quads (2 types), 293 total score. That 3A3T, 3A2T, 3Lz-1Lo-3S in the latter half was amazing in LP :shocked: And if he skated R&J#2 now, I am so sure he would show more polished and beautiful steps and choreo than 2013 and I really want to see it (let's save it for next CiONTU?

Over time I’ve come to appreciate the R&J2 program. It really was one of the most ambitious at that time. The choreography was great too. He just never skated it that well, with the exception of GPF 13. He was still struggling with stamina issues and perfecting the 4S.
I still prefer RJ1 though. Love Craig Armstrong’s soundtrack for the 1996 movie and Desiree’s Kissing You, which was a theme that ran throughout Armstrong’s composition. It is just beautiful, and Yuzuru did a great job skating to it.

But I have to say R&J1 in Nice will always be special to me. He was raw and ambitious there. And recently just realized that time he was not in the top/group who skates last? His rise to the podium must have been dramatic. That time he was amazing, he was the future. And look where he is now.
Then next will be Seimei PC, the relief and triumph on his face after finishing. It was good he skated at the end of the pack, though Shoma and Javi skated later. When he won can't help but to cry ugly. You know the feeling of doing something so right when it mattered the most? That was just so surreal.

I remember he said something like he tried to think Juliet was the audience About GPF 2013, I also totally forgot he skated "Story" in the Gala, that must have been good for TV viewers because it was(is) popular song by AI.

Thank you for your kind words Yes, it was choreographed by Wilson. In Nice, he skated in the last group in SP but finished in the 7th, and in FS he skated in the 3rd group but won the bronze medal (his FS was the second place overall :thumbsup
R&J#1 is also special for me, forever. I can't even talk about the program objectively because I love it too much

This talk made me go back to watch his performance in Nice... my heart goes *thud* every time I see that freak fall :’( But somehow it makes that program all the more emotional and memorable... and also Nanami’s tears T.TR&J#1 is also special for me, forever. I can't even talk about the program objectively because I love it too much
