Seems like is a Tutberidze's team thing. Tutberidze's team like to make provocative costumes and programs for her girls. Like Medvedeva's vogue or the one in which she had a wedding dress, Tsurskaya's EX when she was 14yo, or Trusova's dress EX this season.

Yes, that one is lovely! But there's been so many black and red tango costumes that I need them to have something more to stand out from the rest, for me personally, and this one didn't.

In terms of consistently good costume, for ladies, Yuna(and other Korean ladies), Anna & Mirai have came to my mind.

It's funny that Johnny came my mind as a consistently good costume male skater (before he retired), while I don't like Yuzuru's Johnnish costume:devil:

It's true, velvet is well known for accentuating curves which is why it's historically been popular for tight evening dresses. On Shoma, this choice of fabric definitely did just that to certain features of his, more so than I personally prefer.
 
Akiko Suzuki was the queen of beautiful costumes.

Yuna, Mirai, and Ashley always had/have lovely ones too.

I don't mind Yuzuru's over the top extra-ness. That said, I don't think many others could pull off his costumes.

Actually I like experimental and extrovert costumes... but she‘s always very near the boarder of hit or miss...

Much like the "medieval" costumes, I have never seen a full on illusion mesh covered midriff costume (of the type often found in Scheherazade programs) that in any way worked for me.
 
In terms of men I have really enjoyed Adam's costumes as of late.


Lambiel's cat costume negates any good costume he's ever had...
 
Laurine pretty much saying goodbye to Sandra Dee with this costume change, probably the best of the last quad and totally necessary to the story she's telling. Respect from various commentators and fans alike :agree:

I do think Yuzuru's costumes are a mixed bag, although most of them this past quad have been fine to excellent. It's typically Johnny's costume designs that I can't warm up to, although Zigeunerweisen was designed by Johnny and made by Yuzuru's mother so I have lower expectations for it.

I'm also not a a fan of the Requiem costume, but I will readily admit that all the sparkles make for an amazing effect when he's in motion. I remember watching him spin during the gala in Boston and it was gorgeous with how the costume twinkled as he was spinning so quickly. I always thought that whoever designed that costume (I wonder if it was also Satomi Ito) made it too literal. When I look at the ruffles and illusion mesh I think I see the intent. For a program about the earthquake and tsunami victims the costume made me think of ocean waves ripped by claws raking the Earth, but it just doesn't look flattering on a human being just standing around. For a more literal costume that works, his Etude costume is my favorite.

As for other skaters, I always thought Rika Hongo has some great costumes, and I loved Maia's costumes as well. Mao had some amazing but also a lot of unflattering costumes, especially costumes that had too much going on around her bust. Some of my favorites were for her Ritual Fire Dance SP and FS costumes. For the men, as long as there aren't puffy sleeves I think I'm fine with almost anything so long as it looks like some effort and thought was put into how it looks aesthetically.

Alena's 'Pirates of Carribean' SP costume for 2011/12 season was amazing!Very 'true' and authentic to actual lady pirate :laugh: and this program was such fun itself! I'll always miss her kind of attitude:)

I consider 'O' FS costume/its variation on upper part as just exquisite to look at, its sparkly version Adam used during past season was simply mesmerizing: it was a lot of bedazzle/sparkle, but caught every ray of light in motion, adding to his arms' work. And loved the form-fitting silhouette - if anyone was able to pull it off and flaunt it, it was Adam;)

I didn't like the Requiem costume at first, but after finding out what the program was about and seeing it in motion, I thought it worked well for the program. I think Yuzuru's costumes since Sochi have been mostly good to excellent. He has slim shoulders--although they are bigger now than they were a few years ago--a long torso, slim hips, and relatively long legs. His best costumes accentuate his shoulders and give him a more powerful appearance, use belts and/or beading to shorten his torso, and show off his legs. I think the Seimei and Chopin variations were perfect both for his body type and those programs. My favorite is the 2015-16 competition Seimei costume. The beading on that was exquisite. The way his tunic flew out when he jumped, showing off his legs, was beautiful.

The Hope and Legacy costume was also very well done. The ombre effect with lighter fabric at the the top and swirled beading made his shoulders seem bigger and shortened his torso. My sister walked in one time when I was watching Hope and Legacy. I was expecting some negative comments, but she immediately said, "What a beautiful costume!" Then it was, "Who is he? Is he cute? I want to see his face!" :laugh: I was surprised to read that Yuzuru does not have any sort of sponsorship or endorsement agreement with Under Armour. His practice outfits seem to be custom made and often accentuate his shoulders and hips. I had assumed that Under Armour was working with him.

I've loved some of Evgenia's dresses, especially her short program dress from the Olympics. She seems to have a boxy torso, and that dress not only had beautiful beading and fabric, but also gave her a more shapely appearance. She looked gorgeous in that dress.

Michelle had so many gorgeous dresses, they are almost worthy of their own thread. My favorite is her deep violet Rachmaninoff dress from the 2002 Olympics.
 
Not a fan of Hanyu's costumes....

Mirai always had beautiful costumes as did Michelle Kwan. For the men I prefer something a little more subtle than Hanyu and Misha Ge.

Maia Shibutani, I believe, either designs and or makes her own costumes and they're always elegant and understated. The only digression from that was her SP dance this year with all the sequins, etc. but it fit the music. I liked MOST of Ashley's costumes but not all. Bradie Tennell and Polina Edmunds - eh! Looking back, Josee Chouinard's dresses were beautiful and fit her music. Wish Kaitlin Osmond would ditch the scarf around the neck - not becoming and getting tiresome.

Miki Ando and Suzuki Arakawa had dreadful costumes IMO. Always wondered if it was the same designer.
