2018-2019 GP Assignments

be sarcastic but before picking on Canada, you could pick on Finland .. they have no ladies really in the pot... why not invite Craine???? it's not about big and small federation all the time..

No need to pick on Finland after they just agreed to organise a GP, when others didn't want to.

Thank you, Finland.

it was a figure of speech... i am not picking personally on Finland... i am looking at some people always putting down specific Canadian skaters to justify picking on Canada for not inviting an Australian skater.

I agree with you : Thank you Finland and Canada for picking up China's events.

Oh yes, I'm sorry, I forgot. Little countries just should be grateful the big countries condescend to allow them to exist and compete. Go sit in the corner little countries and never fight for fairness, because you should just be grateful that big countries let you play at all. :sarcasm:

I hate to be harsh but until they can have a top skater yeah thats how its going to be.

The Australians aren't that weak as a group of skaters. Both Kerry and Craine made the cut for the FS at both Olympics and Worlds, and their Pairs team made the cut at Worlds. OTOH, Canadian lady #3 didn't make the FS at either Oly or Worlds, and even more shocking, Canadian #3 Pairs and #2 Man didn't make the cut at Worlds.

great... so why not being invited by SA?

All the ladies currently invited to SA are ranked higher on the SB list than Kailani.

Though LeCavelier and Rajcova are not ranked as high as Hanul:(.

As the U.S. host pick criteria last year appeared to be the highest summer score, it is entirely possible that the host athlete could be ranked lower than Kailani. Though it is also entirely possible that the host spot will go to Wang, Hicks, Ma, or Zhang (should each continue), who are ranked above Kailani.

Laurine and Nicole Rajicova train in the US - Colorado Springs and NYC. Per her ISU bio, Kim trains in Seoul during the competitive season. That makes her more costly for the US federation to bring in than the other two.

Kailani trains in Los Angeles, so she'd be cheap to bring in as a replacement if someone drops out. But Hicks trains with Kori Ade alongside Laurine now, so she'd be a cost-effective host pick for a federation looking out for its skaters' finances (she and Laurine would be able to split coaching costs for the event).

I know. It's still unfair, less exciting for the viewers, and not good for the sport. I can understand the realities of the situation and still acknowledge the flaws within it. I have tickets to SA. I've already seen both Laurine & Nicole skate. Nicole has been to SA twice, including last season. And Laurine was at SC last year.

Korea has the highest ranked athletes on the replacement lists in 3 of 4 disciplines. And part of that is because their athletes were skipped. I'm grateful to Finland for picking up the slack, and I'm sad Korea could not afford to host. But this does highlight why GP events should be balanced geographically. And while I don't think much of karne's argument here, I do hope Australia can find the means to begin hosting more events like the upcoming 4CCs. It's nice to see countries like Korea & Australia producing multiple athletes. In Korea's case, especially, athletes that are homegrown and adding to the depth of the overall sport. We should be looking for ways to continue expanding the sport into new countries and to do so without dumbing down the level of competition. Here is a prime opportunity to do so, and yet athletes get left home because they live too far away from high profile competitions.

Maybe some form of special funding could be put into place to help defray travel costs for senior athletes near the qualification bubble. And really there must be some way to improve the lack of geographical balance on the JGP.

Excluding host picks, I think Matteo Rizzo is the lowest ranked athlete in Men SB list with 2 assignments. They skipped a couple of skaters who had better SB (for ex Cha and Kerry) to give him a second GP.
And Rizzo's GPs are Skate America and NHK. So not particularly cost saving in terms of traveling him around.

There is a NHL game at Hartwall arena 2.11. Hotels will be full, so book early.

Has someone already come up with an abbreviation for Grand Prix of Figure Skating Helsinki / FIN? Something that doesn't get confused with Finlandia Trophy.

I’ve been calling it the Finnish Cup. But I assume it will be some variation of Trophy of Finland or Cup of Finland. So why not CoF?

Yes. THIS. Where the money could come from is a different story, but Feds passing over athletes because their travel costs are too expensive in favour of someone with a lower SB closer to home is a real shame. I know financial realities are what they are within this sport (how strange to contrast the ISU with FIFA right now during the World Cup...) but there must be creative ways to allow athletes to compete on the GP without travel costs being the central consideration.

I have heard that there is a lot of problems with KSF (corruption, etc) so was not much chance it was going to be in South Korea

Well Bianchetti and that lot.
It's all about influences and Fed pull. And the Italian Fed has it. Korean Fed is currently falling apart. And poor Australians are ... It's ISU, business as usual.

The Italian fed also didn't fill a number of seeded positions that they would otherwise have been entitled to due to athletes retiring or otherwise declining to participate (Anna/Luca, Valentina/Ondrej), so I suspect that probably earned them some consideration as far as gaining invites for the next generation.

Yes Australians aren't that weak. They are not weak compared to those Canadians who didn't make the cut at worlds and olympics.

I don't know if anyone on this thread has asked this yet (as it is a long thread....lol)....but why did they change Cup of China to Finland now? Either way, I'm very happy about the upcoming season...looking forward to seeing everyone's comments and thoughts =) Happy Summer everyone

The Chinese Skating Federation for the ISU said it would be unable to host any events this season. Some think it's a move to protest them suspending one of their judges, but the federation has not declared that as the reason publicly.

You can't "hand down" assignments to another discipline though, that's not how it works
