Evgenia Medvedeva

smh at it. When I lived in the UK I loved celebrating their national holidays as well! Plus, they captioned it "proud american and russian"...

Which national holidays you mean? because everything is bank holiday :) . Except if you were in UK in 2012 and celebrated the jubilee.

I actually was there for the Jubilee! But I also meant holidays that don't exist in Italy (Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, ecc) - I think it's a nice way to embrace a different culture!

Not everyone likes this photo in Russia. Tbh i can understand it.

Really? I would celebrate 4th of July when we lived in the US and I'm not American. We celebrated various national holidays while we were in other countries as well very secure in the fact that I am a true Canadian. I don't see why people would have a problem beyond those who would have an issue with whatever she did. This is seriously getting old...Glad she is in Toronto opening up her horizons.

Exactly! There’s so much to gain living abroad or even just embracing other cultures! It doesn’t mean you don’t love your own :) I feel 100% Italian even after spending 3 years in the UK and traveling around.

Zhenya will gain new friends, a really good knowledge of English, will learn new things and habits... and all this will be a treasure for her for life

I'd like to echo everyone else here and mention that her English has improved tremendously in a very short time. It's already better than when she did the Olympic channel interview, and that itself was a huge improvement over how she sounded at the Olympics. She is picking up the language almost as quickly as a child. Good job, Zhenya!

There is a lot more precision in Fahrenheit. It's too bad that freezing doesn't occur at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, as that would make more sense, but for temperatures, Fahrenheit is what, 1.8 times more precise? ;)
I wish we would use the metric system for everything else, though. Feet and inches and pounds and yards and quarts and gallons and such are cumbersome.

Also so proud of Zhenya!

Not sure if this is true, but I read somewhere that Fahrenheit was developed around the human body. The setting of 100 degrees was based on the average of a bunch of recorded human body temperatures (before getting more accurate 98.6). And each degree was the unit where people on average could detect change in temperature. Or something like that. But for cooking/chemistry/science and everything else metric works better but for anything involving the human body/experience Fahrenheit is better. So weather, room temperature, medicine etc.

I wish the US would start forcing signs to also have metric labels so people could slowly start to adapt.

As well she’s still very russian—in her live she was trying out russain food with Jason and mentioned that she made him honk at the other russian cars in celebration and in their picture together celebrating their grand prixs there is a russian flag that is used with the World Cup countries seen in which she must have brought from Russia indicating that it is very important to her. This is the girl who sewed into her scarf the russian flag for the Olympics when they couldn’t have the russian flag or colours I don’t think they gave anything to worry about.

Yes for anyone that is able to do so, living and travelling abroad is so good for the soul!

It's wonderful to embrace new cultures!
In the US it’s pretty common to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick’s Day. And I’ve been to Bastille Day celebrations in the US. Pretty sure I’d participate in all those celebrations if I was living abroad and it wouldn’t be a big deal or mean anything about my patriotism.

I'm not going to go into it because it's against forum guidelines, but I'm sure there are some deep-rooted cultural/political perceptions at play in people's reactions to the photo.

Evgenia's always impressed me as a quite a worldly person, given her interest in K-Pop, Japanese Anime and her desire to learn English. I feel that's kind of in conflict with some folks over there. That openness has been a draw to me.

I agree with you and that's why I'm drawn to her as well and also why I think it's wonderful that she has taken this opportunity to be away from home and experience other cultures.

It's going to help her so much in the long run! She's going to have a lot of opportunities post-skating because of all these new language and cultural skills she's gaining.

Jason is a really great person to cultivate that interest with because he too loves travel, languages and exploring cultures.

Same. I won't go into anything that's not allowed here, but I've wondered if one of the reasons why she's often mercilessly dogged on is because she may be perceived as "counter-culture" by some.

I am grateful there are plenty of fans who celebrate those things! And she is really beloved by other skaters too. She made it clear that her priority is to live a life full of meaningful relationships and openness and I think she's on the right track.

I think you and Mrs. P have hit the nail on its head!

So can I toss something at you guys?

What did you guys think of her Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close program from the 2016-2017 season? I had a really hard time with it because I am American and the step sequence with all the voiceovers brought back bad memories of Sept. 11 (I was in college and had to write about how it affected students on campus). I know it was an Averbukh-driven program, but it was hard to watch especially after her exquisite W.E. free skate, which remains one of my favorites from her.

Honestly, the storyline worked and the music was beautiful and I feel like she could have pulled off the story without the voiceovers (though I'm not sure what you would put there instead). I also think that the step sequence was a bit of a crutch from her truly being able to interpret the music the piece.

I'm kind of glad to hear her say that in hindsight she didn't really love it. Anyway, I tried to be open-minded and am curious about other fans opinions. I'll add that I actually had shown the Russian Test Skates/Japan Open version to a few non-skating friends and I got a range of reactions. Some did feel like it was too soon/poor taste, but others had some good opinions that they felt the bigger problem was interpretation of the pain.

I didn't enjoy the program as a whole, I don't like programs that have the roots in real events like 9-11 or the Holocaust. I will say that at the beginning of the season I don't think she looked comfortable skating to it but by WTT she learned how to sell it. I enjoyed her W.E. program more - my personal favourite is her AK program from this past season. That's the thing with her is that even is she is not into the music or the program she knows how to sell it

Personally, I loved the choice of music, especially the second one - which has nothing to do with the movie and it's pretty much a completely unknown piece by a completely unknown composer. I think Averbukh has many flaws but he always picks incredibly original music.

So, as a fan, I loved the music - minus the 9/11 sounds, of course, which I thought were insensitive. I liked the choreography fine except for the picking up the phone\carrying the suitcase bits, which were a little too much imo. The second half of the program was the better one for me because I liked the music more and she really seemed to get into the program there, and her skate at WTT was honestly breathtaking.

To be honest, I thought it was a nice program and that she sold it really well. Without those awkward phone moves and the 9/11 sounds it would have been my favorite of hers after WE and Chopin, but because of those details I couldn't embrace it 100%
