Thoughts on Evgenia Medvedeva's 2018-19 Season

I really really really want Evgenia to skate to Butterflies and Hurricanes by Muse. Or the Maleficent soundtrack. I really really really do! She is very good and could skate to a number of unused, unusual pieces.

Evgenia needs to grab a hold of this amazing opportunity. First of all shes working with Brian Orser so she needs to sort out her lutz issue. Second and thirdly, shes got David Wilson and the freedom to choose her programs. She should choose two radically different music pieces for the sp and fs to show diversity. Like how the team trained Yuna for her senior debut with a sassy tango as SP and a light elegant balletic lark as FS. I'd like to see Evgenia optimize her current situation and give us two programs that are different yet fully developed and true to the music. This means no more awkward hand gestures in the start of the program. Evgenia is an olympic medalist and I hope she feels the need to mature artistically. Without the constraints of Eteri's awful choreographers she has a great chance to shine as a fully developed skater.

She'd probably be willing to do that. I know that she's seen the movie because she's watching it on her phone in the backseat while her mom texts and drives her around (stop that, Mom; watch the road!) in the Ice and Fame documentary.

The thing is, their composer, Joe Hisaishi, is pretty restrictive towards where his music is used. I think Hanyu had to meet with Hisaishi's representatives in order to receive special permission for his program. Maybe Evgenia could pull it off (that would be amazing!!), but I'm not sure....

Yeah, I've read that before, too. She'd probably have an easier time getting permission for a series, like she did with Sailor Moon. I know that Last Remnant was stumping for some King JJ skating from YoI, and since others have skated to YoI music, I think it's probably accessible to her.

I'd love to see her skating to some Saint-Saëns. In general he is unfortunately underrepresented in the FSing world minus Yuna's exceptional Dance Macabre in the 2008-2009 season. I think she'd do a great job with Danse Bacchanale from Samson et Dahlia for instance.

ETA: Ah but I see Alina did it for her SP in 2016-2017.

Saint-Saens would be wonderful! My favorite is The Swan but of course Yuzuru has done that so beautifully that I don't know if it would be a good idea.

So my daughter is in a summer music camp and the theme is based on Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals," which is where The Swan is from and I wonder why the other parts don't get as much love in skating. The piece is 21 minutes long!

It could be not enough time to take care about everything. There's still too much work for Evgenia, with skating skills and jumps technique. Imo this season Borser team will not be focused on developing excellent programs but mostly on her adaptation and health care.

I agree.

Brian has stated that the goal is 2022 and not the top of every world podium between now and then.

The first season in a quadrennial is one to work on relative weaknesses and take risks with new training approaches and techniques...

And all the more so for Zhenya...

I agree and disagree actually.

The goal is obviously Beijing 2022, and she obviously doesn't need to win everything these next 4 years to make it there. At the same time, if she takes too much time adjusting she risks being overtaken by the next gen of Russians who are just behind the corner in the 2019-20 season, which would greatly hinder her chances at Beijing 2022.

She needs to take her time to adjust and for Brian's method to work but at the same time she can't afford to take too much

I agree with that, and knowing Zhenya, I think she can handle ;)

She's been at TCC for less than a month and we can see improvement in her skating skills already!

Yes I have faith in Zhenya and Brian! They know what they're doing :)

Those mysterious skating skills....I just saw that she started to skate heavier than before but if this means better skating skills....ok

Uhm, the heaviness may be a step along the way as she adjusts to deeper edges, deeper ankle and knee bends, and more push coming from the blade with her weight a bit further back on her blade...

Lightness will be possible again as these are more fully integrated...

It's amazing that we can see the first steps in a transition so quickly...
