Evgenia Medvedeva

I actually liked her SP dress more than the FP one  I hope they dye the FP dress a deeper red, at least...

I want the sp one to still be black, but a more 20's flapper style and not quite so short. I'm sure I will love it. :)

Braidie came prepared, but I’m not too worried about her. Her top form (her skate yesterday) still does not come close to Evgenia’s top form. But the improved Braidie does make the competition more exciting.

Just saying, I doubt yesterday was Bradie's "top form", no skater is in top form in September.

Anyways, I think Evgenia will easily get back to winning once the season starts. The Orser camp takes the season more slowly rather than like the Eteri camp, where you must be clean starting in July lol.

You’re right - she will probably perform better as the season progresses. What I meant was that at Evgenia’s peak, she’s far ahead of Braidie.

As many of you said, this season is a transition period for Zhenya and is going to be all about her settling into the new style, new technique, and the new environment. And as with anything, when you're trying to get to the bottom of something and fix it, the process is usually wonky and slow: I imagine that as where Zhenya is.

The truth is that now in order to win at big competitions, Zhenya will need to learn new jumps. Like a -3lo combination or 3lz-3t with a correct edge. Just this season, we have already seen three senior girls with more difficult content than Zhenya: Bradie, Rika, and Alina. It seems like judges are trying to freshen the field and go easy on the PCS early in the season as well, so the component advantages cannot be relied upon at the moment. In other words, being clean will not be enough to earn her automatic gold at Grand Prix Final or World Championships, let alone the Russian Nationals. Of course, she might, as you never know what others will do in competition. Rika's 3a isn't yet consistent. Bradie's inexperience, Alina's nerve all come into play. But Zhenya has her own downfalls, like her axel and her Lutz edge.

All this to say, I think we should all remind ourselves that Zhenya is adjusting. She might lose at the big competitions, even with a clean performance. This is just how it will be, mathematically speaking. And we should be okay with that. Zhenya seemed to be grateful for the silver medal last night, and I was happy to see it. I'm saying this because I know some of us are distraught by the fact that she lost, and I completely understand them, as she has been so perfect for such a long time. But as time progresses, as needs arise, she will try to make herself more competitive. If not, she will be a happy skater nonetheless, as gold is not everything that matters to a skater's life. And her decision to move to Canada tells me there's more that she values than just winning at competitions. :)

I agree with this generally. Hopefully RusFed will maintain its support through the rocky period. I have no doubt Evgenia has what it takes to overcome the immediate obstacles, I hope she continues to receive the support of her federation.

I mean we're all here worrying about GPF, Worlds, medals... but even if she's not top form she's still World Top5 (as of today). I think her only contestants right now are Alina, Bradie and Rika... and the difference with Bradie was 3-4pts so...
I can't figure out why she wouldn't be on the GPF or Worlds, unless Liza or Maria Sotskova suddenly do the skates of their lives. I'm happy for her right now even if she doesn't medal, but I think we are worrying too much.

I know there are some things lost in translation but I’m so happy that Evgenia is so positive in her interviews and has that fire in her to work hard. Right now there is so much scrutiny on her, it must be difficult

I expect PCS to be all over the place for a couple of years which is like that for every judging change

I hope she keeps the fringe part of her SP dress but I love the brightness of the FS dress

The truth is that I expected at least one silver or bronze throughout the season, but I never imagined that it would be in a CS competition. hahaha, it's funny. I prefer that she fail here than in the big competitions, this will serve her a lot to evaluate. Someone commented that David Wilson has not been to TCC, if it is true now it would make sense why the FS looked so improvised, literally Evgenia imitated one of her steps from her old choreos, it seems that this program is quite incomplete.I think the choreography is not finished, I hope they do it soon, I was really excited for a Tango, but the music cut is too soft, needs more accents especially in the stsq, I'm optimistic and I think everything is can improve, there is a lot of space in the programs to add things, remove some others, and of course, improve the interpretation and that Zhenya fits perfectly to the chosen image;). I didn't like this dress either, it's not for a Tango, I'm still waiting to see her in a dress like that.
Bradie did it very well, you have to admit, Evgenia deserved to be second here. But, Evgenia will still have in her favor the ability to make two 3-3 in the second half + an extra triple, Bradie can't do that, let's say it's a Russian secret weapon.
The fall in the 3Loop is only due to insecurity, deconcentration, we know that it is one of her best jumps, she lost 5 points with that error, she knows better than anyone that this can't happen again. 2A is still her nemesis, she seems to fear that jump, hopefully Orser will help her with that. It's only her first competition, and also a B competition, that before, not even King Hanyu could ever win(until now, it seems he broke his curse, did he pass it on to Evgenia?). Don't get pessimistic, we know that this will be progressive, the girl looked happy, she is mature and understands the context, the only thing that remains is to train and train.

I agree with you about the dress and music. Someone suggested she use Yuzuru's costume maker. I am not sure who that is. At least she nailed one double axel in the program!

I so agree about the dress!!! She only lost by 1.5 points and between the two programs, she gave away 10. There is so much that these two programs can grow.

A completely unrelated and off topic question, what happened to the Russian Ladies thread? Either I’m going crazy or it disappeared on me.

I really wanna see what Shae could come up with for her. Maybe next season.
Shae-Lynne Bourne is a great choreographer, but she works with skaters for a while to find their own artistry and to put a lot of nuance in. And her programs always seem technically challenging.

Given that Zhenya arrived very late in the off-season, I don't think there was any option but to work with the on-site choreographer at TCC - which is David.

I'm thinking that down the line, as Zhenya explores a broader range it would be great to see her try to work with any one of a number of choreographers in the area: Shae-Lynne, Jeff Buttle, Lawrence Vipond or even perhaps Lori Nicol.

I may be wrong, but I believe Yuzuru's costumes are done in Japan.

I'm thinking that to make sure she gets something that works for her, she needs to go closer by.

The major elite costume designer in Canada for Ladies is Josiane Lamond of Elite Xpression in the Montreal area. But that's still 5 hours by train or 1 hour flight.

An interview with Josiane who has costumed others at TCC, Yuna Kim and Gabby Daleman among them...

There is at least one in Toronto that Alaine has used, and who let Alaine's grandmother finish applying the fringe and crystals... I'm wondering if that's where they went.

I'm glad that she's happy now, but it's a shame that her happiness had to come at the cost of losing the truly special skater that we once had.

Sorry but that is ridiculous - so she gets a silver medal a B comp after moving half way across the world, with a new team, new methods of training, retooling jumps and new way of skating and suddenly she is no longer the special skater she once was? To me this makes her even more special - I can already the improvement in her skating and I think it is wonderful. To me she is going to show us even more of herself and be truly spectacular and I for one can’t wait to witness it
