Nathan Chen

The season is still young and its okay for nathan to chill his layouts while adjusting to the new system.
Things will perk up again once he visualizes his room for improvements.
Study is very important too for his long term plans and it is wise to place it in priority as early as now.

It is not only that, without a coach around, to me that is the biggest problem. Even Paul Wylie, I am not sure he had this problem, but there was no GP at that time

Wylie didn't have this problem, the Scotvolds were based near him for training.

Eh i see no reason to panic just yet, alina first comp back at russia skate she fell 3x and she recovery nicely, nathan should be on track soon. Just wished he did a cs series, before skate america. Hoping this is some kind of wakeup call for him and give him the tryhard motivation he neeeds.

They listed this as Nathan's planned layout:

4Lo
3Lz
3F-3T
3A
4T-2T-2Lo
4T-3T
4S

Did he just throw in a yolo 4Lz because he missed the 4Lo? It sounds like he never intended to jump 4Lz or 4F since I saw no reports of him jumping those in warmup. In light of that I don't how seriously we should be taking these results.

I am more concerned that he won't be able to balance quads and choreo again...

Me too... and indeed, he already left out several nice transitions to focus on the jumps :disapp: (if we assume that what we saw at SV and 'The Ice' was mostly the final program in terms of transitions...).

His spins were also sloppy and slow, and they looked fine just a month ago during shows. Yes, I realise these are different circumstances and he seemed pretty shaken and unstable after each fall, so that might have contributed.
(ok, but he's not the only top man who's currently struggling with spins ;P)

:palmf: If this is in fact true, that means he's learned nothing from the olympics... why on earth would he throw in a 4Lz if it wasn't planned and he didn't prepare it in practice??

Seriously, if I didn't like his skating style so much, I'd gladly switch to another skater as my fave, someone with a reasonable approach towards his jump layout and his current capabilities and someone who actually cares for the integrity of a program.
I hope Raf gives him an earful after that showing.

ETA: At least the 3A was there, so that's one positive thing. Although I do mourn the spread eagle that was left out...

He's not the only man have problems in general (other than Nobu of course lol). It's way too soon for doom and gloom and suggesting he needs to make changes. He shouldn't have even tried such a layout in the first place for his first skate out and probably still being jet lagged. He seemed disappointed so I'm sure this will motivate him. And if you gotta flop, this is the time to do it and work to fix the problems before an actual important competition.

His 3A had his highest GOE.

Long distance coaching shorterm for a couple of months maybe, but not 2 or years. There's FB live, videos and what not these days to help with long distance thingy.
