Belbin-Agosto: A New Free Dance

It's not hard in this part of the world - ie Europe - where, along with Men's, it's the most popular discipline, and has been for years.

Dyan, I'm pleased you were able to see some of those FDs I listed, and so glad you enjoyed them, there's certainly a great variety this year. :agree:

It's a shame that when ESPN aired Skate Canada they chacked all the FD's except for D&L. F&S have one of my favorite dances this season as does V&M and unfortunately ESPN chose not to show both teams.

Even though I'm glad that B&A have changed their FD I wholeheartedly agree with those who felt that if Tanith and Ben had enough time to properly create their "That's Entertainment" it could have been an excellent dance. I didn't like the fact that Susie Wynne kept stating that the Fred and Ginger type dances were out of date so to speak. Especially when other teams have been doing the more ballroom oriented programs and have been better received.

julietvalcouer, one of the reasons I liked B&A's Elvis medley so well was because once you got past the costumes what they did was an excellent jive/rock n roll FD.

Here's a list of just a few of this season's upbeat FDs:

Cappellini/Lanotte - Hollywood Musical theme in the vein of B/A's original choice.
Faiella/Scali - Upbeat Disco
Hajkova/Vincour - Elvis Rock & Roll
Carron/Jost - Edith Piaf, happy singalong, with him wearing a fair isle sleeveless sweater - very charming and romantic.
Kolbe/Radebe - Rock&Roll [in the vein of G&P from 94]

I'm not saying they will not be entertaining. That remains to be seen. What I am saying is that their technical will be ignored in comparison to tunes fromTosca,Polivestian Dances, and assorted angry tangos.

If any of the above named couples get on the podium, I will scream out that my observations are wrong.

Oh, and I do agree with you that Ice Dancing should not be compared to Ballroom Dancing. I think it could more easily be compared to Pairs. Tricks, tricks, tricks. I do have my personal likes and dislikes in just about everything in this universe. ;)

I've watched competitions in Europe and have to agree, the fans are there for Dance in numbers unless Evgeni is skating. I do not think this will happen in Japan at this year's Worlds.

Cheers- Joe

I think someone could still do a "Fred and Ginger-type" program and be successful, but I don't think that team is B/A. I think DuBreuil/Lauzon could do a lovely job with that, but it just didn't fit Tanith and Ben. I predict the Amelie soundtrack will suit them much better.

I don't know if it is on youtube, but try to get the Torval and Dean Olys' Fox Trot. It was ballroom dance on ice at its best. They came in second to a strange jitterbug. At least the evening wasn't sturm and drang.

I think that Belbin and Agosto should've scraped the "That's Entertainment" free dance, though I liked the musical selection, they need music that is passionate and shows deep artistry to be able to reclaim their status at the top of the world the way that they established as second in the world at the Olympic Games last February.

Maybe this new free dance will bring that dance back into their dance and maybe they'll win their 4th National title and maybe then win the world title that they so badly deserve. I don't know what happened to them at the World Championships last year, they were perfectly lined up to win it and then they didn't. They were second at the Olympics and then Navka and Kostomarov winning the Olympic Gold went into retirement and without them in the mix it was for Belbin and Agosto to steal the show and win the US's first ever World Title in Dance. Maybe they'll do that this year, but of coz they will have to fend off the Defending World Champions; Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviyski of Bulgaria and world Silver medalists Marie France-Dubriel and Patrice Lauzon to win that world title. I hope that they do for their sake and for the sake of US dancing in total. Good thing that there are three spots available at worlds for the Dance, i'm sure that Belbin and Agosto will get one, Gregory and Petukhov another but then there's that third spot that's completely a wide open up there to the team that does the best of the others and comes up and steals that bronze medal and their first trip to the Senior Worlds.

I don't believe that B/A are able to battle for a world gold yet, even with a good free dance. But dumping the old dance is great.I just don't understand some of their fans, which are saying that they don't like the "angst ridden" or "hair tossing" or "drama" dances, but as i don't see "Anelie" like a music for a Wedding Reception dance or Pink Panter or anything entertaining like that... i do believe it will be a dance qualified as "hair tossing" or "drama" maybe. And i have the feeling that suddenly the same people who denied this kind of dances will absolutely love them. Funny, isn't it....:) Die Hard Fans

I think this is a good move for them. Whether or not fans liked their FD, the judges didn't, and it wasn't just about lack of training. Hope this new one works better for them. Hope they plan to go to Four Continents with it, it really is in their best interests to get some kind of international judging panel reaction to it before hitting worlds, since they are unlikely to get a really indicative reaction from their own nationals where they will not be challenged for gold.

:agree: This is what I would say is "unnecessarily having to overlook" to see the real content. If it looks "jokey, it will be interpreted by many as "jokey."
This is JMO - of course.

Oh I LOVED the Elvis costume... and her dress was stunning... I saw nothing over the top

the Elvis/Marylin program that Elena and Anton had on SOI was much worse... THAT was hokey

ok...one explanation for theyer costumes on pratice

I"t’s a practice dress from five years ago,” she said with a shrug. “I arts-and-crafted-it myself this morning.”

:)

OK, now THAT is a winner. They look fab from the first pose. The music is beautiful with a lot of variation and rising intensity (I'm surprised!), the costumes make them look gorgeous, and they look polished, fast, and confident, with some real wow moves. Kudos to them for pulling off this midstream change!

I really like the new lifts and spins....but the music puts me to sleep and not is a good way..lol I would like to see something more edgy and tense from them.. This music just makes me sit back in my chair and slump. ;)
