Evgenia Medvedeva

Did her flutz improve? I need an expert opinion!

In competition, no. It’s still a clear outside edge.

However in practice this is not the case. She manages flat edge and in some cases it looks like a very shallow outside edge on a few of the videos I saw. This is very promising. The thing is under the pressure of competition it’s easy to go back to old habits. It’s going to take a lot longer to fix the flutz, we have to give it more time.

I think it’s incredible that she’s working on improving this, even if we haven’t seen it in competition yet :)

I read somewhere that the rink in the venue is smaller than the usual rink.
It's a standard NHL sized hockey rink.

Many skaters are used to Olympic sized rinks which are larger, but in North America skate on NHL sized ones.

That said, some have said that the corners are unusually tight there.

I expected her to score well over 140 and win the event but she was somewhat underscored due to minor deductions probably because she was not in the final group. The judge panel was harsh on her and her GOE scores for most jumps were only between 0.6 and 1.3, when she could have gained more.

I was surprised to see that the 3S+3T did not get any 4s. Her 2As scored well, but to me the first 2A was better than the second one, yet the GOE on the second was higher than the first.

I am torn about the 3Ls in her programs. I fully understand the sentiment that she should remove at least 1 3L. However, it really looks like her team deliberately put them there because they want her to get used to jumping them in competition. Brian himself said Evgenia has done many clean 3Ls in practice. I just read Brian said that they could create programs that would let Evgenia win specific competitions now, but he reaffirmed that their plan for Evgenia is long-term, rather than short-term.

That all makes sense. But they were also probably banking on Evgenia not having made that big of a mistake in her SP at Skate Canada, which now makes her next competition a must-win. So, I am interested about the team's next move.

In the end, I think her team knows better - I think her team cares about her and supports her aspirations. So I think they will make the right choice for her. But in the meantime, with her place in the GPF at stake, it presents an interesting scenario for her team.

Some of the skaters commented something to the effect that the rink is narrower than the usual NHL rink, like by an inch and a half. That's why people were like so close to the boards, even in the exhibition.

Well if there is anyone who can fix her lutz it is Brian. I think it would help her confidence though to lose one lutz. I also hope that the Juniors coming in doing their quad lutzes are given the same treatment on their lutzes.

Uhm. It was built and is used for an AHL team, so it has to meet the NHL minimums.

However, the NHL notes that depth of boards and other variations in construction materials lead to subtle differences. Optical effects from seating location and colour can be a factor even when the size is identical.

But TCC's main rink is non-standard and has no boards. The skaters do practice and there are simulations on others rinks, but it may be an adjustment for both Zhenya and Jason.

I wonder about the choreographer, too. It‘s a wonderful program and she looks so free. Like old but new Zhenya at the same time. I‘m warming up to her new style but this is ... wow. :luv17:

here's an interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgigxmKN2FI where Zhenya tells the story behind her new ex. She says she's done everything herself! the choreo, the costume, etc
And she says she and Kostov are just friends.
A great interview!! Very informative

Does anyone have a link to Zhenya's lp with B.ESP commentary? somehow all the vids I can find have no commentary or is in Russian.

I would have never guessed she did the entire choreo for the EX herself. Really impressive! It's such a wonderful program and honestly I'm amazed by her progress in that regard when you compare it to the first EX she choreographed herself, just a few months ago.

Ah it would be really great if someone could translate all of it ^^
On another note:
I think that what she wore here is also a part of getting her used to the other programs more, which I think is a great strategy.
I watched the sp without warning and since I got quite sad I first opened the protocols file and then watched the fs. Too bad about the mistakes, but I think being first in fs proves that she can be still consistent.
On the scores being low, I think that this year it's just a matter of the judges being stricter, and to be honest that's fair and how it should be since proper judging will only lead to even better skaters.
Congrats to Zhenya, and I really liked the EX. It made me rewatch most of her other EXs again :D
