You think Shoma was the only skater that has jump issues. Yes we know we have been told a trillion times. The guy is landing 4 quads in the FS and 2 3A he has
won both of his GP competitions with a score that the other guys could not touch. I am not sure why Shoma is held to a different standard then every other skater.
There are excuses I hear for other skaters on why the jump did not go right but when it comes to Shoma the negative drivel starts and never stops. Give the guy a break.

Are you talking about prerotation that Kurt mentioned? He is not the only ones. TSL mentions it too and how bad the flip technique is. In fact they say that they dont ever see him being clean because of it. But they love his skating just not the jumps too much. Kurt was actuallt more complimentary on jumps. And he has alway complimented Shoma skating.

..and you believe TSL who has a reputation of preaching BS and making predictions through a crystal ball. :disapp:
Thanks for letting us now about their recent backhanded compliments about Shoma.

Some argue Shoma pre-rotates, some point out that he also under-rotates, and now we know that he over-rotates as well... Wow, is he a rotator. Maybe he's a particular species of virus called ROTAvirus?..
I need to think about it. That might be a breakthrough in Shomatitis studies!

I do not think it is back handed compliments. They are doing a skating review where they are looking at the jumps too. In fact the week before they both said that judges really are not worried about prerotations. One of them brought up prerotation because the ice dancer said he just notice this swing in Shoma shoulders on the landing and if it could be causing issues and the former single skater said that is from prerotation. Now the single skater does not like the technique on the flip at all. But they both love Shoma skating. They have always raved about how centered he is. They love Satoka but they criticize her jumps too. And it was obvious that they agree with Rika getting the gold over her.

Thank you Logirl for your informative post. I can’t speak for anyone else in FF but I am well aware of the comments about Shoma’s jumps. I just don’t really want to discuss other people’s arm chair take on his jumps. That is what the Edge is for. I prefer to leave that type of discussion out of Sho’s Fan Fest. ✌️ Peace.

Totally agree with you, Demarinis!

It's easy to critizise what someone does when we're not able to do even half of what this person does. Seems everyone is infected with ROTAvirus, there's such an obsession or maybe it's just a fad...

Peace too ✌️

Well whatever to what people say at the end of the day Shoma is "IN" the final and that's all that matters.
I confess came back to check out the salting eggs pun lmao :scratch2:

Generally, I haven't been a fan of Kurt Browning's comments on Shoma in the past two years. He's a bit hot and cold. I did like that "a skater's skater" comment. The eggs comment was silly. Carol Lane, on the other hand, I fully appreciate. I'd have preferred her to continue in that vein for a while.

I have to catch up on all the videos!

I enjoy Kurt's silliness. He doesn't overdo it. I still remember everyone marveling at Sho's Loco at Sk Amer, and Kurt explained his jumps by saying there was a lever that comes out of the floor and launches him into the air. Then he proceeded to totally gush about Sho and his wonderful program. He's just having fun.

Between that and the full blade obsession, I'm not sure what's worse. I keep waiting for the day that one particular person's full-blade take offs are shown, but it never seems to happen. Not mentioning any names.

Maybe some people have a lot of free time and don't know what to do with it?

Anyway, we know our Shoma is a great skater and a wonderful person and he's in the GPF! :yahoo:

Hi everyone,
Someone told me about this tweet by a Japanese fan who breaks down Shoma’s StSq in STH so I translated.
I am no technician and cannot explain it, this is just for fans to appreciate how talented Shoma is in areas other than jumps.

He makes it look so easy! And got Level 4 on it at NHK.

Notes in the Tweet
○Blue letters: CCW (counterclockwise), Pink is CW (clockwise)

StSq includes 6 kinds of turns/steps in both directions
The cluster looks difficult with a lot of switching from CW to CCW
I like the part where he changes from left foot to the right and twizzle in a different position

I had not seen this translated in this thread yet so I hope you find it useful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOvtOWoiMkQ It is an interview with the men of Team Japan at the Gala.
A=Announcer
IM=Ito Midori
S=Shoma
SO=Sota
SA=Sato (should have made it H for Hiroaki, Sorry!)

Quick translation (not word for word)
As always, contact, or comment if you see an error.

IM: Shoma-kun congratulations on winning your very first NHK Trophy.
S: Thank you.
IM: How was it, your first NHK?
S: Among the many GP events I've attended, Japan has the biggest audience and the warmest reception, which I was able to skate in.
IM: (she's a little broken in her sentence, so I'm translating an approximation) This salchow, were you tired? it seems like it was underrotated, though I thought you had got it. But it was 70%, the rules are so harsh!
S: Yes, well, this season the salchow has been mostly unratified, so there's a way to go, it makes me realize that there's work to be done on the Salchow's execution.
IM: I see, do you feel "Uh oh," When you land it?
S: When compared to my Toeloop, it's not landed straight and clean, so there's no help for it if it gets a UR.
Announcer: How would you rate yourself?
S: I wouldn't call it good by any means, but it makes me want to do better next time.
A: Are there a lot of reactions to your win from various places?
S: Not really from anyone.
IM: Well you will make history from here on.
A: This is your first NHK, how was it, winning in front of Japan?
S: I felt like I had to meet everyone's expectations, in results, of course, but I also wanted to meet expectations in performance, but this time I wasn't able to reach that. That is something I want to do my best towards in the upcoming GPF.
A: Next Month Vancouver, please do your best.

A: Next, let's have a word with Yamamoto-senshu.
IM: Sota-kun, you're from Aichi-prefecture right? I knew about your injury, but to come back from that, to NHK....Well many who have been injured... have had to quit, but that you've made it back this far is amazing! Respect!
SO: To be honest, there were tough times, but I'm here on this stage now. (He mumbled a bit, I can't hear what he said exactly)
A: This is Yamamoto-senshu's short program. Comments?
SO: I messed up the combination jump, so I have to fix that and train it, but everything else was good I think.
IM: In your free you popped your first axel, but then you recovered and went on and landed it. Did you worry? "What should I do?"
SO: The first one, I was not concentrating enough, but after that I was able to concentrate, and land the second one some how.
IM: I see, when you went for the second one, it seemed to me that you must have confidence in your jumps up to the triple axel. (I think she means he had recovered his jumps up to the triple axel)
SO: Everyone jumps it as a matter of course, so I thought I'd better do it right as well.
A: You had 3 operations on your right ankle, how was it during your performance? Before the competition it seemed there was some discomfort?
SO: Well, during competition, it seems to come out, but it will go away as I rest and train. -Which I have to do for next time.

A: Sato Hiroaki Senshu, this is your second NHK appearance. Again, you've shown us a different side of yourself.
SA:Yes..well
IM: You were so cool! Your image changed dramatically, don't you think so?
A: You changed your hairstyle too.
SA: Thank you, thank you.
A: You were saying something about a manly appeal?
SA: Yes, this season, I changed my impression dramatically, to portray manliness, or a manly sex-appeal. But due to worries about jumps, the flow was not good. But I hope I was able to bring a different me from last season.

IM: as 3 who competed together in the Junior Championships, you were able to compete together again.
A: Yes, in fact these three competed together in the World Junior Championships of 2015 I think it was. You competed together, as rivals. Here's the photos. Uno-senshu won, Yamamoto Sota was bronze and Sato Hiroaki was 15th.
At this time, Uno-Senshu, what did you think of Yamamoto-senshu?
S: At the time, I was training at the same rink as Sota every day. There was a lot of feeling that I didn't want to lose to him. And Hiroaki-kun was very interesting, that is to say, I didn't know how old he was at first. I didn't know which words to use when speaking to him. (there's different words to use with someone the same age and someone older) During Junior Worlds, we talked a little bit, and I realized, he's older so I should use polite speech.
IM: He (Hiroaki) is going to University and studying and skating at the same time! Are you going to university? WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL? WHAT ABOUT VEGETABLES?? (she's getting very emphatic here) Those can can do it, can do it.
A: Midori-san has known Shoma since he was a child, right?
IM: Of course, since the time he was crying. He was crying and kicked, and his mom would get mad at him. Since that time. And it took a while, didn't it, to get the triple axel. After that, it was all fast, but till then, till he learned the triple axel it was tough, that's my recollection. But once he got that then he got one thing after the other. I thought that there is a time at which a male's strength grows.
A: Is there something you want to say to your Sempai? (superior, in Shoma's case, Midori-ito skated in the same club...I think?)
IM: Comon, say something! We meet, you know, in Aichi, and he just says 'hi' Mao and I, we say to each other, "We'd like to talk to Shoma more" but you don't talk to Mao either do you?
S: That's right....we don't talk. We say hi. When I was little, I probably talked with out thinking of it. But once I realized what a great skater Mao was, it was all I could do to greet her.

A: Since this is the 40th anniversary of the NHK Trophy, we'd like to ask you athletes to answer what will you be doing in 40 years? We asked you to write it on these boards, shall we start with Yamamoto-Senshu?
SO: I answered seriously, but I want to be involved in skating.
A: What is this dream in practical terms?
SO: Since I can't do anything else besides skate, I want to stay involved with skating. Not limited to being a competitor, at 60 years, competing would be tough. I want to be involved with skating.

A: Sato-Senshu.
SA: Mine is VR. The Virtual World, I think in 40 years will be an even more amazing world. I think, I'm drawn to the virtual world.
IM: Are you studying this?
SA: No, that's different. This is a hobby.

A: And Uno-Senshu, in 40 years?
S: 'Nothing'
IM: Typical Shoma.
S: Yes, when I see people who work hard every day, I have so much respect for that. To get up early day after day, and work, it's amazing. And I definitely couldn't do it. So presently, I'd like to quietly do nothing.
IM: So interesting
A: But soon the GPF. please do your best.
S: Yes.
A: This has been the men's skaters Uno Shoma, Yamamoto Sota and Hiroaki Sato.

Thank you very much Interspectator. I got the gist of it when I watched it, but to get the whole interview translated must've been a lot of work! Thanks again. :thank:

About that last comment of Shoma, having respect for people getting up and going to work everyday, I really do wonder what he thinks he's doing all the time? He's an Top Athlete, World Class Elite. He didn't get there without 'going to work' everyday. Oh, Shoma! :slink:

I thought, 'I'll just do a bit, they're so cute' but then I couldn't find a good place to stop so I ended up doing it all.
No doubt Shoma works hard every day in training. But an athlete's life must not feel like 'real life' I'm guessing. It must feel like an effort that is removed from what people consider daily work. It's why so many athletes find the transition difficult afterwards.
But Shoma has his plans laid out.

Shoma's also at University, went to school all his life....I mean, is that really so different to the real life of an adult? He has double pressure as one of the top athletes of his country. When Shoma retires, I'm sure he can find a job that won't feel like "dragging himself to work everyday" somewhere. Whether that's at Toyota, as a coach or even as Pro-Gamer. ;) There are enjoyable careers out there, Shoma-kun!
