2018 Internationaux de France Men's Short Program

Jason has scored in the 90s before the new scoring system because of the quality of his spins and footwork. This isn't a surprising score from him. But the new scoring system punishes people for bad jumps. Before you could rely on the BV. Now, you have to land them and do it well.

As it should be - I'm happy to see that Jason is getting rewarded for the quality of his skating and the attention to detail he has. Seems the new scoring system will allow him to work on the quad with his new team and add it when he can do it as well as everything else he does. Read an article about his move to Team Orser - Tracy said the first time he stepped on the ice and began skating, everyone just stopped and stared.

I can see this. I love Hanyu, but Browns carriage, extension, spins, skating skills, are in a class of their own. He makes me think of Cizeron.

Yes. I adore Hanyu, but I always was to show him how to lift his triceps so he has a better line in his upper arms (full disclosure - I'm a a ballet teacher).

Kolyada as well, on his good days. He gets the same jaw-dropping height that Hanyu does and has top-class skating skills. I could watch his WC18 SP for days.

<s>oh wait, I forgot Hanyu doesn’t emote</s>

Kolyada upsets me so much. TSL accurately compares him to Baryshnikov and it's a shame to see his jump technque, sharpness, and SS go to waste with the meltdowns.

Good for Jason for going clean, but a program with no quads should not beat a program that had two quads! Talk about over scored. At this point, it's better for Aliev to just stick with triples, if the judges are going to award quadless programs with SP scores over 90!

No. A program with well landed quads and wonderful skating skills should beat a program with well landed triples and wonderful skating skills. Sloppy landings on quads and mediocre skating should not beat beautiful triples and wonderful skating. If you can jump a clean quad you deserve the points, if you screw up you don't.

I actually really like Aliev's skating skills but Jason is on another level and deserves his marks for PCS.

But Jason is in first because Nathan fell. I may not be a big fan of Nathan's but he would be in first if had been clean.

While this is probably true it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter what you do in practice, only what you put on the ice. Competition is about more than just your innate talent. I'm glad to see Jason regaining his confidence. I don't expect the lead to hold in the free, but I think a medal is definitely a strong possibility.

It is more about what the judges seem to like and a clean Nathan will beat a clean Jason even if I would prefer to watch Jason.

I wonder what Nathan’s layouts will look like as the season progresses. The risk/reward game is a bit more complicated now, at least if PCS caps are in play and adhered to.

As for Jason, while I don’t expect a quad immediately, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 4S or 4T do manifest at some point. It won’t be enough if Nathan goes with a 5 or 6 quad free skate, but just a 4S would cut into the margin. Then again, Nathan’s PCS and TES have always been a mystery to me, and I don’t dislike Nathan. There’s just still a bit too much reputation judging going on. But seeing the order after the short... it’s a start!

I can’t even talk about Kolyada, as I think I’m going down with that ship or else moving to Russia and older-sistering all the pops out of him. He’s such an immense talent — the otherworldly height on the jumps, the extension and body lines, the skating skills... I would pay to watch him do a programme of singles. Sigh. Please, Misha, have a stronger second half of the season!

I’m very impressed to read about Jason. I wonder if he’s going to be like....whathisname American who won Gold with a quad-less skate at the Olympics. Personally, I’d rather see jumps done well, rather than people underrotate.

Not worried about Nathan, but worried for Boyang Jin. The poor guy is a last minute replacement; I want him to do well.

Evan Lysacek, and no, almost certainly not — Lysacek did do the quad, but not in the skates that won him the OGM. But the BV difference between quads and triples wasn’t what it is now — the 3A was worth 8.2 and the 4T 9.8, so 1.6 difference. That became 3A 8.5, 4T 10.3 after Lysacek’s win and the subsequent quad controversy. Lysacek took advantage of the 10% BV bonus to secure the win over Plushenko. At least we’ll always have the jumpsuit.

Also, Boyang isn’t a replacement. He was always scheduled to compete at IdF. Visa issues delayed his arrival.

If the other guys are doing at least 2 or 3 quads clean, it wont be enough for Jason. He just doesnt have the BV.

I am interested in Nathan's layout as well. He has nothing to lose here to try 4 quads if he feels comfortable or just go 3 quads because if he performs like Skate America, he will win.

To be fair, Nathan deserves his high PCs. He has earned it and he has improved a lot. If clean, his PCs will overtake Jason here.

For Jason, he might as well go for a quad. It is not like he is going to the GPF even if he wins.

The thing about Jason is he is working on the quad. He is reworking his jump technique which is not an easy thing to do. I think we'll see the quad from him, it's just going to take time as he learns a new way to jump. I don't think he'll be satisfied with his skating until he gets it.

Kevin AYMOZ: what can I say? I love this man

Dmitri ALIEV: I can summarize this with “how to be a beautiful skater and mess up with a jump” :palmf:

Deniss VASILJEVS: he’s taking us to the 70s but I need sunglasses  i'm glad he is finally clean.

Nathan CHEN: not as brilliant as in SA, no gipsy magic for him today, must be because of the haircut

Jason BROWN::hap10::hap10::hap10: he is one of my favourites so I’m so happy to finally see him doing great! He was perfect and for tonight he is America number one! Congrats Jason!

I really dont like nathans program or music. I think its a totally bad choice for him. whereas Jasons music is perfect!

Jason's program (music and choreography) is so good it makes me want to skate to it.

The program also fits him like a glove. This is choreography at its best.

I definitely don't agree that Nathan should score higher PCS than Jason if they're both clean. I mean, he certainly will, I just won't agree with it.

Legit laughing out loud at people thinking quads are the be all and end all of skating instead of...you know...the actual skating.

AMEN!!!!! Have been saying for a long time now that there is more to skating than quads. Good for you Jason!!!!!
