Johnny's Reaction in the K&C

Skating fans are so fickle...
It reminds me of other skaters who've had bad competitions and some rise again ala Kwan, Joubert, Yaugin and then others don't... who's to say.
Here's wishing him good luck at Worlds and a better season next year.
KW, my Alexei never had a bad competition!!!

Just wanted to tell you that you are so philisophical!!!

Dee

Eudgene - hi, Udg %) nice to see you here :)
I fully agree with you, just couldn't express it better than you did %)

I remember one season (2001) when Alexei lost his World Championship crown to arch-rival Evgeni Plushenko. Alexei appeared crushed, but he came back the next season and won the Olympics and World Championships (leaving Plushenko in the dust).

It was not necessary to continuously and unsubtly underline Evan's heterosexuality at every opportunity (no one else's significant other was shown), as if to say he's the new straight poster boy for US Men's Skating.

./QUOTE]

No, but they did the same thing when Michael Weiss was competing. Lots of references to the wife and kids, with the obligatory camera-panning, as if to say "And in case you missed it, here's visual proof that Michael Weiss is heterosexual." Sure the kids were cute, but so what? It's not like any of that made him a better skater.

I never saw it as a gay vs. straight battle during coverage...

the only place I saw the argument was on the skating boards

You know, if sexual orientation REALLY didn't matter, this thread wouldn't exist in the first place. JMRHO.

Maybe they are trying to show heterosexuality because the awareness of homosexuals is omnipresent in FS all ready. No need to promote something that everyone is aware of. So they are promoting through trying to connect with BOTH crowds, just from the money marketing stand point alone makes sense. It has to matter:yes:

I for one don't think Evan's smiling and winking at the camera had anything to do with they way Johnny skated. He was happy for him self that's how I saw it. He was in the lead and on the verge of winning his first National Championship.
Johnny's "little' breakdown in th K&C seem a little put on to me.

I don't have a problem with the fact that Evan won. He skated great, but I was greatly irritated by the way the media (and Evan) handled the win. There was just too much gloating and grinning and bad sportsmanship. Why did we have to see cut-aways to Tanith Belbin so many times (being presented as Evan's girl)?

It was not necessary to continuously and unsubtly underline Evan's heterosexuality at every opportunity (no one else's significant other was shown), as if to say he's the new straight poster boy for US Men's Skating.

Well the posterboy acted rude and downright unsportsmanlike on camera. Reminds me of the way Nancy Kerrrigan acted when cameras or mikes were rolling. Bigots may hate Johnny because of who he is, but Johnny has shown himself a gracious winner and loser and a true sportsman.

I believe we are being subjected to the cut-aways to Evan's girlfriend Tanith for much the same reason I felt Michael Weiss was always making sure to shove his children and wife down our throat on tv every chance he got - it's called homophobia - and it seems Evan, as did Michael, doth protest too much.

Let them all be what they'll be - who cares - they just seem to want to be sure we fans know they're straight - who gives a flying fig.........

Evan is not in charge of the coverage. If you have issues with teh coverage blame it on the people who actually run that part of the show, not the skater who let it be known he was seeing someone. What they do with that knowledge after that is up to them.

As for Michael, it's not a phobia either, yeah they did fluff pieces, he likes to talk about family he likes to be seen as a family man. In this day and age when being a GREAT husband and father seems to be a novelty I say more power to him.

I don't think in skating you should have to be closet anything, gay or STRAIGHT.

I don't think Johnny was putting on a show with the crying... it seemed weird as I have never seen him get that emotional in the K&C... but maybe it finally all came to a head...

Of course he wasn't 'putting anything on' ! He was hurting but managing to hold himself together until Priscilla sensed his pain and put her arm around him. That was the straw that broke him.

Evan won and laughed Johnny lost and cried both perfectly normal reactions, IMO.

OK for those who STILL don't get it. Evan and Tanith were the only two gold medal winners dating each other. That is why they showed her reactions in the stands. They show people that they know we know who have a connection to the skater performing. Mike was in an unusual position that he was married and a father while Olympic eligible.

Lot's of people like fluff. I like fluff. To not have shown Tanith and the Weiss gang would hae been silly

i think he was upste not so much about the title but becasue he could not deliver a great performnace and give it his best shot. Evan kicked his butt hard and he knew it.

Now Piel, you know better than to inject logical thinking into a psychological musing conversation amongst figure skating fans... Next time think before you post something ringing with so much common sense... what were you thinking? ;) :p

(ok. I'm getting obnoxious, its time to go home...)

I agree, Rick. It was obvious he was really trying to hold it together (maybe remembering the reaction to his breakdown at Skate Canada last season) but when Priscilla hugged him, I think it was, I dunno, maybe permission to let go.

I was so emotionally overwrought after watching Evan and Johnny's LPs, his reaction seemed perfectly appropriate to me, lol. I was crying myself.

And I don't think Evan was trying to be mean. I'm not even sure what he was seeing, since they turned off the Jumbotron in the venue as soon as Johnny started crying. I guess he could have been watching the ESPN feed. In any case, it's an awkward situation. Evan's just a 21 year old kid. I thought he was fine.

And I don't know why Johnny chose to watch Evan, but I have a hard time believing it was to try and psych him out. If that gorgeous, textbook 4-3 Johnny did in the warmup didn't psych Evan out, I doubt a little staring would

then if the jumbotron was off my guess is the monitors Evan saw were only those of the marks, or I guess was waiting for them?

It's amazing that we won't give the skater the benefit of the doubt just because of how a tv organization decided to replay(read in 'create') the "drama"...

Hi Seafoam

I've heard/read about that 4-3, which apparently Dick Button said was better than Evan's, but not seen it. Did you see it live, or is it around as a clip somewhere ?

Okay I'm still fairly new here and I'm not sure what I should and should not say but I'm going to be honest and if it gets me kicked off the board..well it's been a nice but brief posting career here. :)

I am not an Evan fan. I never have been. However I do agree that he deserved to win the title Saturday night. He delivered an amazing skate and Johnny didn't. As for his reaction backstage, I hope he wasn't being petty because it would be truly sad if he were. I wasn't there and I certainly don't know what he was thinking.

As for Johnny, I think it was a very human reaction. He had pinned all his hopes on a good skate and it didn't happen. His coach, one of the people he is closest to, touched him and he broke down. I didn't think it was over the top, I think it was natural. Hell I shed a few tears for him myself.

I prefer Johnny's skating to Evan's. Always have. I also prefer Johnny's personality to Evan's. It's just a personal choice. :)

Well Johnny did have a lot to defend, especially being the three time and defending National Champion. I think more than anything, the performance of Evan really was on the back of his mind the whole time. His reaction, well I think it was all natural to him. If Johnny is in fact gay, I belive that its completely his business and if he is he's probably going to announce it to the world after he's done competing or at least that's my opinion.

I think that now Johnny is going to come back, if anything I hope that he takes this as a learning experience and a wake up call and that he does some of what he is capable of like what we saw at the 2004 Worlds where he was awesome~
