Random Confessions

Yes Vika and Betina  Vika was having coffee with Nikita, they both seemed very relaxed and in a good mood which was nice to see! She is very glamorous :) Betina looked a little tired, but I imagine three tough days of practice/competition would do that to anyone! I love her hair :agree: and it's such a shame they didn't get to do their routine in the gala yesterday!

I don't follow Superbikes so I'm afraid I don't know any of those people - but I'm glad your persistence paid off in getting a few autographs! I am very pleased with the ones I got during this competition, but I was only happy to ask when it seemed like an appropriate moment (and because NNF was more confident than me in asking, so thanks to her I have many more )

Sorry to hear about the passing of Nicky Hayden - I just looked him up and that's an absolutely terrible tragedy.

The best bit of that trip was that we managed to meet the reigning World Superbike Champion, Jonathan Rea. It was my Dad that approached him. Jonny is also from Northern Ireland, so when he heard our accents, his face lit up. And every time he went past me on his scooter for the rest of the weekend, he waved.

I know there were lots of other people from Northern Ireland there. And I'm sure he did the same with everybody else that he knew was from our part of the world. But, it did make me feel special.

Since then, he has gone on to become the most successful rider ever in World Superbikes. And we couldn't be more proud of him.

With regards Nicky, what happened to him just shook everybody to the core. To go racing at such fast speeds week in week out, only to be killed while out training on a push bike. And he was such a nice guy. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. A massive loss.

Although it was only brief, I'm just happy to have the memory of meeting him.

OK, so the conversation about the Kiss Cam yesterday reminded me of a story I meant to post about a couple of months ago, but never got a chance to.

So, here goes...

That awkward moment when you are scrolling down your Facebook news feed, and you see some holiday photos posted by a skater you are connected with. And because it is somewhere you have been, you decide to look through them all to see if you recognise anywhere (I didn't – they were all taken either at the beach, or by the pool, or inside the hotel).

And then you reach a photo of her with an older bloke, and you go through the following thought process:

“Eh?! Is that [insert name of her coach]?!”

[Brings photo up to full screen]

“My goodness, it is! What is he doing on holidays with her?”

[Pause]

“I wonder if this is a working holiday? Is she maybe doing a show, or doing some workshops? Maybe that's why her coach is with her.”

[Pause]

“Hang on, I don't know of any ice rinks on that island.”

[Does a search for ice rinks on that island]

“No, I was right. There aren’t any.”

[Long period of confusion, before the penny finally begins to drop]

“Or... are they... dating?!”

So, I go straight to her Wikipedia page, and find out they are not dating…

...they are MARRIED!!! :jaw:

I then click through to his Wikipedia page, and get another shock. He is actually older than I thought he was. By about 10 years.

All of which means that the age difference between them is actually bigger than the age difference between Davankova and Morozov.

All I can say is that the coach I am talking about here is a very lucky guy – his wife is gorgeous!

I was disturbed by the Kiss Cam :slink: :palmf: It's one thing to have it up over the faces of two dance or pairs partners because at least their ages are similar and they'll probably know how the other will react, it's another to put it up over a young lady and her older male coach (I think you know which example I mean). Pretty bad on behalf of the organisers. If you are going to have a cheesy overlay, make it the 'cheer' cam or the 'fun dance' cam or something. Or just don't have anything...

But in regards to your post, is that a certain Olympic medal-winning Canadian skater by any chance?

The first time I came across a Kiss Cam for people in the audience, I thought it was all a good bit of fun. But then they started picking out people who clearly didn't know each other, and it all got very awkward. In fact, I remember one time it picked out 2 people, and one of them signalled that it was the person sitting on the other side of them that was their partner, and the camera had to move over.

That was when I realised "ah, maybe this isn't such a good idea after all."

But to do it with coaches and their students is just unbelievable. Totally inappropriate on so many levels.

But in regards to your post, is that a certain Olympic medal-winning Canadian skater by any chance?

Nope. I've known about Meagan and Bruno all along. And the age difference between them isn't that big - only 12 years. Sure, that is the sort of difference that isn't much once the younger person gets out of their teens. It's the same age difference as me and Liza Tuktamysheva.

The age difference in the couple I was talking about is nearly double that...

Just booked my airfare for my second trip to Nome, Alaska for next March! Kinda apprehensive as I still don't know what the cost is for the room

Colds are terrible, I slept for 16 hours and I still feel like a wreck. Why doesn't life have a sick leave?

The moment of sheer fear when you get up first thing in the morning, sign into Facebook, and find that you have received a PM from a Russian lawyer!

Don't worry, it was all good!

I had sent her a message last week asking for permission to tag her daughter in some results tables that I had taken screenshots of. And this was her getting back to me saying that I could go ahead, and thanking me for the support.

When posting something that involves children, it is always best to seek parental advice first. :agree:

Me: Wakes up. Looks at alarm.

Clock says 5:47 am.

Oops.

Guys, where is our bellet thread again? Can't find it anymore for some reason.. :?:

There were a lot of threads archived a few days ago.

I'm not sure what thread you are talking about. But, have a check through this season's archives:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?667

If you find the thread in there, you can use the report option to request to have the thread restored.

There is another thread that I am going to request to be restored as well (albeit not right now). So, you won't be the only one doing it.

Ballet thread :)

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?59491-The-Great-Ballet-Thread

You could maybe ask for the mods to reopen it by reporting the first post and asking them to reopen it :)

Great minds think alike, Sam! :agree:

Except, the thread in question was archived a few months ago rather than a few days ago, and so ended up in the 2017-18 Season Archive rather than the 2018-19 Season Archive that I thought it would be in.

Which would explain why the only ballet related thread I could find was one from The Edge that Alexz hadn't even posted in... :rolleye:

Glad it's all been worked out now.

The wonders of modern medicine, I managed a whole presentation and discussion at school. I hope this cold abates tomorrow, I have work all day and I can't have my throat sore.

That cheery news aside, I started reading The Master and Margarita (because a certain Sasha, not a skater though, said it was her favorite book), and I am in love with it. Spasiba Sasha :luv17:

^ one of my all-time faves, 'The Master and Margarita', great choice Ichatdelune !

I am in a bus going home to my mom for a weekend, to share a bit of my 'Grenoble fame'. And to eat something good, as my mom asked what I would like to eat, bortsch (beetroot soup), dumplings (pierogi) and other fabulousness!

Master and Margarita is a fantastic book!

NoNameFace, I am so jealous of you getting to have bortsch and pierogi -- two of my favorite dishes!

Serving virtual plate of dumplings and mug with bortsch to you guys all - big hug from my mom who teared up seeing your support here over my Grenoble adventure and reception to the gift for Piper and Paul :ghug:, now she fully understands how much this means to me:)

Master and Margarita is one of my faves too! The Russian TV series is worth watching as well :agree2:

I will not eat pierogi till Christmas Eve.... :(
