Jason Brown

I’m at my iPad and can’t link, but has anyone watched the CBC coverage of Jason’s LP? Siberia82 kindly posted the whole men’s LP in the “IdF no videos thread” in the comp forum. Jason starts at 7:46 in Part 2.

Is the male commentator Kurt Browning? He looooves:love: Jason. And Carol Lane? She  Jason too. It’s what I thought I would hear from B ESP, but did not.

You can hear Kurt audibly gasp at the split, and Carol says if Jason doesn’t do a split there are riots. Kurt says he wants to see the slow mo on the boffed combo because “even Jason’s mistakes are artistic”. Many other words of praise. They don’t even mention the Q word until the last few seconds.

It gives me the warm fuzzies

Yes, that's Kurt Browning. That was a super gushy commentary. It's a nice change!

I really like how this program is developing. The choreographic sequence got a HUGE upgrade. And also I think there is a new change of edge entry into the second 3A -- he goes from into a left inside edge to an outside one right before going into the second 3A-2T-2L.

I also listened to the Ice Talk podcast and thought Ashley's comments about Jason were pretty good (I chucked that she admitted her elements weren't as squeaky clean as Jason's here) but I felt she was tempting fate when she said that she thought it was unlikely Jason was going to do enough to get on the top step, i.e. beat Nathan. She might have meant for this competition, but it was hard to tell.

She didn't say impossible. The phrase that I find annoying and not exactly true, is that Jason is a skater's skater. That is often applied to skaters who aren't champions and he is! He's a skater for everyone!

I always thought skater’s skater was super high praise. For me it means his skills are so good that other elite skaters want them.

This is exactly what I thought. In the context of the commentary, where she and Kurt had no voice wanting in the chorus of praise :) Carol was saying that other skaters recognize the superiority of Jason’s skills.

When they went to the review, it was almost as if Kurt didn’t to talk about the jumps. And this was the LP, wher Jason made mistakes. I would have loved to heard their commentary on the SP.

As a Jason fan, this one will be on my rewatch list. It beats Nathalie Péchalat being salty ;)

I really enjoyed the CBC commentary. All three commentators were very positive and drew people’s attention to what was special without overlooking his mistakes. I think Carol Lane is the Brit, not sure who the other woman is? Anyway, I think Carol is an ice dance coach (Piper & Paul’s?), so I was happy to hear her talk about Jason’s great edges! I liked how Kurt pointed out that he saved the 3A and was able to keep the combo up. Also, I think the closeup of his 2Z showed an outside edge so yay! So overall, thank you @siberia82 for making all of the CBC commentary available!

I have only listened closely to the men’s portion of Ashley’s Ice Talk commentary. She has a really pretty speaking voice and is very outgoing, articulate, and intelligent, so from that standpoint I thought she did a good job. That said, I was a bit disappointed with her commentary on Jason in particular. Besides the beauty of his short program, what was notable about his performance at IDF was the huge improvement from his last two comps and the slight fall off in the FS. Since she had to make tech changes under Raf to win her World medal, I would have liked to hear her discuss his performance in light of the coaching change and learning new technique, and maybe the challenges of sustaining that in FS. What she said she was fine but fairly predictable.

ETA Mrs P I agree about chsq - now just do the Ina B more fully please! Also agree Re Ashley - it wasn’t a very thoughtful comment (I mean that in the sense of insightful not that it was mean or anything).

Thanks for your comments on Ice Talk!

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled with that part either. She said, do I think he will ever be able to top Nathen Chen? NO, because Nathan has the skating skills on top of the quad so he "will never be able to garner that top spot." Maybe it's not likely, but never say never. ;)

I'm still wondering which coach will accompany Jason to Golden Spin. If TSL is right and Barkell is now Stephen Gogolev's primary coach instead of Brian, does that mean Barkell might be going to GPF for Stephan, along with Brian for Cha, and with two of them there, maybe Tracey would be able to go to Zagreb? Is that a possibility?

Tracy or Karen. Karen is the one registerd on the USFS list but that doesn't necessarily mean she's the one that will go.

I'm honestly less concerned at this point about who goes, because it's clear that everyone has bought into Jason and are supportive of him. Apparently Brian even told Stephane Lambiel that Jason was a blessing. Speaking of which, when he gets all nervous about receiving his FS score and he puts his hands out (because he was used to Kori/Rohene taking his hand) and then he just clasped his own hands together, I noticed Brian and Tracy both laughed. I think they both understand how hard it is to get used to a new coaching relationship. And I thought the hug Tracy gave Jason after he found out he got silver was super sweet.

Yeah I think Brian and Lee will be at J/GPF and it will be either Tracy or Karen Preston at Golden Spin. Maybe Karen is more likely. If Yuzuru’s still going to Japanese Nats (is he?) Tracy will go to Russia with Evgenia for Russian Nationals, so perhaps they will have her stay at TCC to prepare Evgenia for Russia and Joseph/Conrad for Canadians.

By the way, with US Nats not far off, I finally remembered (duh) that a couple of US skaters worked with Brian in the past, and wondered who was with them at Nats. In 2009, Karen Preston was at Nats with Adam, but Brian was with him a few months later at WJC (which he won). In 2010 Brian was with Christina Gao at Nats.

So no clear answer as to who might be with Jason at Nats this year. But since dates for US Nats and Euros overlap and Javi and hopefully Evgenia will be at Euros, I’m guessing we’ll see Brian and maybe Tracy at Euros and either Karen (or possibly Tracy) with Jason at Nats. My uneducated guess is that whoever is with Jason at Golden Spin is likely to also be with him at Nats because although Karen was one of the coaches at ACI, and Brian and Tracy were both with him at his GPS, he doesn’t really know what it’s like having just Karen or just Tracy at the boards for him.

If he ends up going to 4CC, it will be interesting to see who ends up with him there. I'm guessing we'll see Brian, since Jun (maybe Yuzu?) will be there too.

So he's pretty much worked with everyone at the boards between ACI/SCI/TDF so I don't think it would be a huge adjustment if it was just Karen or Tracy.

To clarify my negative feelings about the comment "a skater's skater" is that it was used so often to describe Ross Miner and it is clear that the powers that be in USFS did not regard him as a major international competitor. So even though I know that the comment was meant as a major compliment, I wonder if it is part of the same mind set that causes Ashley to say that she doesn't think that Jason can overtake Nathan in competition. Maybe not now without a quad, but who knows what will happen in the future?

I hadn't heard that comment from Brian to Stephane. That is lovely! It describes Jason with total accuracy.

I've heard that term in reference to a number of really accomplished skaters including world/Olympic champions past and present, so I guess I never had that same negative connotation.

Honestly, it's kind of surprising that Ashley of all people would make that kind of comment. People often pigeoned her as the "Almost Girl" and it was clear that after a while she got sick of it. Not to mention that's she herself has been able to beat people who people thought she couldn't beat, like Mao Asada at 2012 4CC.

But I think it's more that people are used to Nathan having such a huge BV +GOE advantage with his quads, the idea of Jason beating Nathan seems a bit out of reach/abstract.

I think one really takeaway for me, is that I think Jason is starting to see that HE can be the best in the world, quad or no. I think watching him in practices at IDF was quite the revelation because he pretty much had the famed TCC murder face the whole time. It was quite a contrast from what we saw just a season ago. None of this "oh I just want to skate how I train." I think he is definitely hungry for more.

Sweeeet!

There was a discussion a while back about certifications needed to coach at a U.S. qualifying event. I seem to remember that Karen was thought to be the only one of Jason's TCC coaches who held the certification. Has that changed?

A couple of things about the Grenoble skates. I loved how both programs ended on the beat with the music, especially in the short. That was very sharp and made a great impression. On a non-skating note, I really liked his hair. The performance hair seemed less flat than it did at the Canada comps. Maybe someone told him he didn't need to use quite as much product, or maybe he's adjusting the to feel of the air going through his hair and is making adjustments himself. It's hard to believe he'll be competing again in just a week. :eekn:

Was the murder face seen at both the SP and LP practices? Because he seemed like such a different person on each of the competition days.

You could be right - it might not be a huge adjustment. I was just remembering how he described knowing exactly what Kori would be thinking at the boards, and how he had to get used to the way his new team reacted. He knows all of them much better now and I’m sure he’s more comfortable with everyone. Karen wasn’t with him a ton at the boards at ACI, but if he’s working a lot with her on a daily basis, it might not be a big deal. We’ll see how he does next week.

Speaking of which, I was looking at protocols for his FS and it was pretty interesting. In addition to losing base value due to errors / lost levels, he actually has quite a bit of room to improve his GOE. With a clean program and an average of about +3.5 GOE on all elements (which is actually a pretty big leap at the moment), even with a 2A he could approach Shoma/Kolyada level scores and - depending on the day - could possibly contend for a bronze medal at Worlds. It’s really interesting to see how much the new system has changed things.

ETA Ashley: I think part of it is that she trained with Nathan and she’s loyal to him. She also made a lot of comments about Mariah contending for the title.

Agree 100%. I will try to get that negative feeling quashed. I too think that Jason has gotten his mojo back and wants to WIN! He's willing to put in the time and the work and he feels confident now. He sees the kids at TCC landing those quads and he wants to be in the club. If he can break his mental barrier, he'll do it! And with his skating skills, he can beat anyone if he gets a couple of quads under his belt. What makes Yuzu the champion that he is, is that when he goes out on the ice and he needs a superlative skate to win, he does it. Jason is getting there. His confidence is growing. He's comfortable in his coaching situation, and he is with friends who all happen to be great skaters. I'm so excited to see what the next couple of years brings!

I think that Jason had to leave his little insulated world of Kori and Rohene and "get out in the world" and find himself on the same practice ice as skaters like Hanyu, etc. on a daily basis. I think his world has opened up and once he started seeing positive results from the changes to his jumping style, etc. he got his confidence back. Not making the Oly team last year had to have had a serious effect on him. I think he's always wanted to win, I think he's always worked hard, but the elite level environment just wasn't there. I'm so glad to hear that Brian values him because the first reports were that Brian had to be talked in to taking him on. It seems to be a symbiotic relationship now. Tara (who I literally cannot stand) did make an interesting comment when they were rerunning the SP before the LP that the extra GOE points Jason accrued in the short program equaled the points a clean quad would garner (I'm paraphrasing) I like that! It shows that that jump isn't the be-all and end-all of a successful program.

@MrsP or any long time Jason fans,
Why was it Jason's jumps in 2017 look more laboured than 2016? Injury? Wasnt the injury in 2016?

The 3A Jason does at 2018 France GP looks rotated faster, faster than 2016. The technique similar to what the TCC men do- Yuzuru, Jun Hwan.
Javier's 3A is a bit different though

Sorry everyone about totally belated report from our M&G from Grenoble... All that happened during IdF has hit me like a tidal wave (but in an extremely positive way!) it got me distracted, and I am still recovering!! :luv17:

It happened all thanks to a journalist from Russia with whom I keep in contact, she talked to Jason and his parents and she sent me a message on Saturday evening, during the Ladies Free, that they suggested a M&G after the Gala. I had given up all hopes of a M&G by then, the message got me :jaw::eeking: I started frantically exchanging messages with her, Jason's mum and all the people who expressed interests in attending the M&G, I practically ignored 99% of the competition :palmf: The panic was actually doubled because another M&G with Deniss, which I was also trying to organize, got approved suddenly and unexpectedly all at the same time. :jaw::eeking::hopelessness:
So both meetings had to be totally improvised in such a rush. Considering everything, both went remarkably well. :agree:
We met Jason at 6:30pm at their hotel lobby, Jason, punctual as usual made an appearance accompanied by his equally wonderful, friendly parents, bursting with his trademark sunshine smile :luv17:

It is a bit of a pity that I didn't film the video of the event, but first I had to get the meeting going at the beginning and the idea escaped my mind - but soon enough the meeting was hopping with so many people wanted to ask him something, and it became more like a lively, jovial and spontaneous chat amongst bunch of pals rather than an interview. I found the atmosphere quite special, so typically Jason, and I feared if I turned on my camera to film what was going on, some people might get awkward and tongue-tied (which I definitely would in their shoes) so I just let it go and decided to just enjoy the moment. I do regret that I didn't at least sneakily record the audio, so I could trace every single question, every little things he said.

But here are some of the key things he mentioned during the meeting.

The family was heading off to London for a bit of sight-seeing. They didn't have a precise plan except to catch a musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie in West End. With London being my fav city in the whole world I made a bunch of suggestions what they could do there, maybe I got too enthusiastic and overwhelmed them lol...

He enjoys the environment with such an international atmosphere with champions from all corners of the world as his training mate, it's a fresh experience for him and inspiring. (I wanted to ask if he ever learned to appreciate kvass but I missed the chance!)

As we saw at IdF, they modified the choreography of FP, realizing that a program without split jump or spiral is not a Jason's program. He does have some say about the choreography, and discuss with the team and what can be done to polish the program. They are still in the process of getting to know each other, also the program is sort of under construction and still keeps evolving. He was initially not sure about the music, but it keeps improving and he is more and more convinced with the choice. Maybe not at Zagreb in two weeks, but by Nationals the program may have totally a new look!
On the other hand, he fell in love with the music for the short program right away, it was discovered by his sister - she heard it during her pilates class and immediately thought of him skating to it - and he knew immediately this was it!

Every new program by each skater is seen and evaluated by the board of judges before the start of the season and the teams get the feedback from them, and they do abide by the "suggestions" the judges make and modify the programs accordingly. (I didn't know that... he said in the US it happens during the US Summer Camp, perhaps in Russia it's the Test Skate, I guess?)

Having worked with Rohene all his life, learning a different type of choreography from different choreographer is challenging but also inspiring, and he is hoping to try with other choreographers in the future to push the boundary. (I almost suggested Stephane.. )
He did get to talk to Kori this time in Grenoble, and he was so touched, she is still profoundly dear to him, despite everything that happened this year.

He actually wanted to do Lombardia again this year and asked Brian about it, because he really enjoys Italy - but since Autumn Classic was by far the best option for Brian, for it being just around the corner from Toronto, so it was not to be!

His biggest inspirations are Daisuke Takahashi and Nobunari Oda. Jason's first Sr. year coincided with the last competitive season for both of them, and they were so kind to him and encouraged him when he was so very nervous amongst the big boys. And he is now so excited about Daisuke's return, and hope to be in the same competition again.

And he assured us, that everything is going to fall into places, it just takes time and doesn't happen overnight. It is going into the right direction.
I told him this result at IdF will definitely be a turning point, a sure sign that things will start get better and better.
I also told him, these days the sport has become all about quads and that's inevitable, but when it comes to everything else, no one can touch him. He represents what figure skating ought to be and whatever happens please don't sacrifice what makes him special not even a bit for the sake of quads.
- and you can imagine his reaction, clasping his hands, melting his face into that hugest, sweetest smile, "Ohhhhh, thank youuuu soooooo much!!" (and of course with a big hug - the best gift in the whole world!)

here is a short clip of him greeting my Italian fan club

The most adorable moment when a French girl asks him to send a message to her friend, and he makes an enormous effort to pronounce the name of the friend correctly

Him holding my banner! (p.s. I am not the author of the famous Jason cartoon... I am in contact with the girl and asked her to provide the illustration when I made this banner!)

As anyone can imagine, he energized us with the most powerful solar power of the entire planet, and sent us home with happy, fuzzy warm heart!!

The short answer to your question is that Jason’s jump technique looks more like the TCC men’s now because that’s where he’s training - since last June. They’re working on snapping into rotation sooner and not using a big kick through, which he used to feel he needed to get power. Here’s an article where he discusses his training briefly:

http://figureskatersonline.com/news...ocusing-on-the-big-picture-the-2022-olympics/

As to the 2017-18 (Olympic) season in particular, his timing and confidence were noticeably off most of the season. He hasn’t said much, but he did describe struggling to get the quad and that he felt pulled in a lot of different directions. He was diagnosed with the stress fracture in December 2016 and it likely impacted him at NHK 2016, Nats 2017 and 4CC 2017. He seemed physically okay by Worlds and did very well there and at WTT.

Thanks for that post MGstyle! I've met Jason briefly a couple of times, but this was really special. I think you made a wise decision not to record it. You were so lucky to be there when Jason did that spectacular short. My personal best moment was Jason landing that now controversial quad at Skate America 2016, and the first big hug and smile that I got from him at the Men's meet and greet between the short and free. It was spontaneous and sincere, and I was so touched by it.
