Mikhail Kolyada

Actually, i think that he got bonus points with the federation. He tried to fight and keep going instead of complaining - you know how twisted the fed thinks and the Russian masculinity model. I bet that the federation knew, they were not so acid toward him like in the past when he didn't delivered at Rosstelecom. Just because Mika and his team doesn't speak about his health issues in the press, it doesn't mean that he doesn't speak with the fed, or better put that the fed didn't try to find out why the golden hen is not delivering this season. As for loosing good will with the fed.... i also think not. He still has the best points from all the men, he beat Samarin just two weeks before - and this while being already pretty unwell and out of shape. If Voronov would have had the possibility to score higher, Mika might have lost some good will, but Voronov is limited, Samarin is limited, Aliev seems injured or not so well this season as well, Kovtun might deliver-might not. They still need Mika and Mika is loved by the international judges (compared with Kovtun which they let very easy to fall as soon as the federation didn't supported him).

Now for Mika and his health: an athlete is used to hurt, he is the last person to decide to stop (see Yuzuru, see Plushenko); he is young, he has no idea how these problems can turn in a big ball of problems (some thinks come with age and/or experience). Let's hope that he learns from it and will be more careful from now on. Mika is a smart person, but also a stubborn one, I can understand that he put a LOT of work into this season, he was already very prepared at the beginning of the season. Naturally after so much investment is hard to let go and say "next year". An athlete never knows what will come net year, if they will be still healthy, or they will get bigger concurrence. It is normal that it is very difficult to give up a whole season, while they are still on their feet. For bystanders is easy to say "take a season out", for them is their day job, a job who doesn't wait, doesn't give you many chances and will be finished in a couple of years.

I still think that it would be possible for him to recuperate and be ready for worlds, if he doesn't compete now to the Russian Nats and take time to gain his strength. For this he will need a bye and the Fed would be mighty stupid to don't give him one in the actual situation of the Russian Men.

I think this it. He came into this season with a world medal, some experience training overseas with Raf, and two gorgeous programs, one choreographed to music he had dreamed of skating to since he was a child. He then had his best start to a season ever with that score at Ondrej Nepela. This was supposed to be a dream season for him, the one where he fully came into his own and asserted himself as a top man, and it must have been so hard for him to let it all go.

If you go by interviews they are all ready to crown Kovtun but Kovtun might resist. Valentina has the problem of having no pull and not being on the coaches' council unlike say Mishin. She can't argue Misha's case there.

It wasn't about giving up a whole season, it was about getting treated in the first half of the season so you could deliver in the second. Now on the other hand he might have to give up the season. After Nepela Misha needed one GP event to make it to Nationals. He didn't have to do Rostelecom or the other two Challengers. As it has been said as a top skater you need to learn to prioritise and let some things go. And also learn to resist pressure from certain quarters. Same goes for the coach.

If Misha turned out at Nationals healthy with two high quality performances it wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't competed much before and told the Fed to largely get lost, they would not have been able to push him under three other men to keep him out of Euros/Worlds.

Kovtun? Really? After competing internationally once this season, and at a challenger event at that? And bombing his SP domestically? I don’t understand RusFed. Samarin is clearly the most logical choice after Misha, Aliev is an even better one if he pulls out two good performances. If Maxim does well and they want to send him to Euros/Worlds, fine, good for him, but why this rush to crown him champion in his comeback season? I know he’s TAT’s golden boy, but even so—let the poor guy ease into it. Here isn’t the place to discuss that, though....

Obviously Misha should have prioritized things better, I think we’re just trying to understand his motivations for not doing so. It wasn’t smart, but I get why he wanted to try and keep going.

Kovtun? Really?
My thoughts exactly, but much less profane.

I really don’t see how Russia’s number one spot is up for debate for the men. Misha has a Worlds medal, for crying out loud.

Are they mad? The travelling alone, and its very cold i gather -20C, will put him right back where he was a few days ago. I have no words...

People are already saying the whole thing is a PR stunt, it didn't take long.

Against stupidity the very gods
Themselves contend in vain.

(there are enough people who think astronauts didn't landed on the moon, the earth is flat, Elvis still lives, Paul McCartney was replaced by an impostor long time ago, etc etc etc)

My only hope about the hospital scare is that he lowered the content in the FS. At this point, expecting the best might be almost too much in these circumstances.

Misha :(

I really really thought he wasn't going to go. I feel like he's going to suffer through the SP and then withdraw :sad21:

Disgusted by the conspiracy theories on the russian forums :disapp: if this is a PR stunt, to what end? This isn't making him look heroic, it's making him/his team look impulsive, overly earnest and unprofessional. Some PR stunt.

Conspiracy theories seem to be based on thinking Misha had the operation as early as the next day after his Zagreb FS, i.e. the 8th, which is patently not possible (there was a Gala). We have already established that Misha could not have ended up in hospital earlier than on the 11th. He was in Zagreb on the weekend, then on Monday the 10th he was at the Academy rehearsing his new EX and a photo of him was published. Most likely he was hospitalised on the 13th judging by the available evidence, but even if it's the 11th there is no time to come out of the hospital, train for a week and be all ready. You can't train for at least 7 days after the operation even when it is done on outpatient basis. In the best case scenario Misha's first day of training is today. How any of this is a PR play I don't get.

Yeah, I saw......and didn't they cite that picture from the summer being uploaded to his stories as "proof" that Misha is using IG to distort the timeline? :whack:

So is Misha in Saransk now or is he training at his home rink (if he is training)?

To be frank, what are the chances of him even making it past the SP at this point? Today is the 18th, the SP is the day after tomorrow and they are not even sure they will compete.

The idea was that Misha's PR manager saw Liza's photo from the hospital and told Misha to publish/published herself an old photo from the hospital in Instagram stories. For the hype I presume. With a message that Misha is in the hospital right then (I don't know how it can be understood differently). As if it can't be checked whether someone is in the hospital or already training in front of a bunch of people. And him not leaving with the rest of the team was for PR, and saying that they are not sure they can compete must be for PR. Misha's team have suddenly overnight become PR sharks.

Misha isn't in Saransk yet as I understand, but he has to be leaving about now. Especially as he probably can't fly and I doubt he wants to arrive right on the 20th.

I guess the goal is top 3 if lucky or top 6 to at least secure funding for next season. Desperate times... Lets all pray for Mika, that somehow he will get through this ordeal

"We'll go there and then decide" sounds like "we haven't trained and won't have an idea what state Misha's skating is in till we go out on the ice tomorrow". Makes sense considering that he was in the hospital on the 15th still (don't tell me someone took over his Instagram account to post fake comments) and that is Saturday and they don't discharge on Sundays in Russian hospitals, so he would have got out on Monday morning at the earliest. And today he is flying out.
