Evgenia Medvedeva

You guys, if Javi can do it, Zhenya can do too!

I just saw Javi‘s freeskate. And I‘m so so happy for him. It‘s incredible that he managed to do that after only 3 weeks of training. And I‘m sure Zhenya is really proud of him too. Well done, Javi!

Can anyone translate this? The automatic translation says something along the lines of Zhenya having had to stay longer in Russia because she was getting treatment for her back. And that the small “points“ on her back at RusNats are part of Chinese medicine and were given to her by TAT. No idea how accurate this is, though. And I’m also not sure whether this is reliable because I don’t know where this info is coming from.

Your translation is pretty accurate. And yes, there's no information about the source of this info.

Can't give any better of a translation but I think most assumed they were relief patches since it looked like she was trying cupping during the Grand Prix. And Javi also mentioned in an interview that she was still in Russia getting treatment for her back so that has at least been substantiated independently of this.

Yeah, exactly right. TAT gave them those things to help Zhenya's back and Zhenya stayed longer to check her back, according to Orser.

This tibit of information might be a part of a longer interview with Orser, because an online newspaper has published like three articles in a row, each dedicated to one line Orser said about Zhenya and all of it looks to be new. One is this information about her back, the other is that he gets asked if Zhenya's going to replace Alina for Worlds. He says he doesn't know anything about that yet, but they're of course training and wouldn't say no to going to Worlds. To be clear, it just looks like the press is in its usual state of overreaction over the results at Euros. Nothing to take serious yet. But I'll be on the lookout for the full interview.

This is interesting. So the injury was to her upper back based on where those patches are. I always assumed lower back like L5-S1 because it is a common area to injure but then was perplexed how she was able to jump still. This explains why Bielmann is so hard because it requires a high degree of thoracic extension and why she is able to jump still because your upper back is less involved.

^ yes, great avatar! Love that part of Evgenia’s Tosca, in particular.

Thank you both! I‘m doing my best to prepare for seeing Zhenya and her wonderful Tosca again! I dared to rewatch her Nationals SP and honestly, despite the jump issues it‘s amazing how she managed to emote. It looked so genuine and it gave me chills. The failed jumps probably only added to the drama. Which does not mean that I enjoy to see her fall. Nope, not at all. I‘m looking forward to seeing Tosca clean in competition!

I figured it was her lower back too but was confused by the pain relief patches on her upper back at Nationals. I think it does make a lot of sense, though. Especially if we consider that she‘s been doing Bielmanns all her career. And that her jumping technique heavily relied on twisting her upper body to get the rotations. Not putting any blames her, just observing. I think she might not be doing Bielmanns for a while. I always loved them but her health is the most important. It also explains her issues with spins in general. I hope her injury heals soon but I‘m sure she’s getting the best treatment possible and her team is doing everything to take care of her and make sure her recovery is going smoothly.

I thought the doctor who was treating her back was based in Germany. Why would she stay in Moscow to treat her back? I think it makes more sense that she stayed in Moscow to recharge her emotional batteries.

She may have wanted to get physio or some other treatments. It may be more affordable than in Canada and since she was staying there for other reasons may as well still get treatments.

Ok, now it's official. Decisions about the Worlds team will be made after Cup of Russia

https://tass.ru/sport/6046190

"The federation is going to analyse the results of Europeans", said Gorshkov, "The decision about the roster for Worlds will be made depending on the results of Europeans and the Cup of Russia where we'll be able to take a look at the alternates. After that the coaching board will hand in their suggestions."

Also very relevant for Men's team, I assume, not just for Ladies. But looks like we'll be seeing Zhenya and Liza compete against each other for the spot.

So this means that only Liza and Zhenya will be there, right? That's how I understand it.

Yes, sounds like it. And it seems completely open how many skaters they might replace if any. So... I still don't think Zhenya going to Worlds is very likely, but it's on the table. Hope she can deliver two solids skates that she'll be happy with and then it's up to the fed.

Team.moonbear gifted TAT flowers and thanked her for supporting Zhenya. :)

About Worlds: So, we‘ll only see Zhenya and Liza. That was to be expected but still feels a bit weird to me. That‘s why I said Worlds is not that important to me - because the fed will be doing whatever they want. The only thing I hope is that Zhenya has two great skates she can be proud of. That‘s what I wish for her. The rest is beyond her control.

I think that the only reason she's going is if she delivers 2 clean programs with 74+ in the short (usually Liza scored this much with the 3A) and 145+ in the free. Although to be honest seeing that both Alina and Konstantinova had less than 200 points this week, if they're planning on replacing 2 skater it might be a bit easier. However, Liza has a clear advantage and rightfully so.
